Tesco shoppers divided over 'sweet sandwich' in meal deal dubbed 'abomination'
The sandwich left one shopper feeling like she was "doing a Bushtucker Trial" We all love a sweet treat and a sugary pick-me-up in the afternoon, but one major supermarket has left shoppers totally divided over its newest addition to the popular meal deal selection - with one calling it an "abomination". Tesco has unveiled the Birthday Cake Sandwich, which some have called "delicious," while others have questioned who on earth is responsible for dreaming it up. In any case, it is certainly perfect for marking a special occasion. At £3, the sandwich consists of "sweet brioche-style bread with cream cheese icing and delicious strawberry jam", as stated on its own packaging. It can be combined with a snack and beverage as part of the current meal deal offer. "Get it while you can," the wrapper states. "Enjoy the sweet brioche-style bread with cream cheese icing and delicious strawberry jam. An all-time favourite treat in an all-time favourite deal." Bella Hill, a content creator, shared news of the product after discovering it at her local Tesco branch on Monday, August 4. Bella uploaded a TikTok featuring the dessert-inspired sandwich, with her initial reaction being that the concoction looked like "colourful coleslaw". Before eating it, she revealed she "felt like she was doing a Bushtucker Trial". She dramatically told her followers: "I would rather eat a bug than eat that." After taking a bite, Bella let the flavours sink in before revealing: "The after-taste is like Victoria Sponge Cake. If you like icing and strawberry jam, you're going to absolutely love that. The bread is delicious." Bella rated her experience a 6/10, and the comments poured in within an hour. Shoppers were swift to draw comparisons between this fresh Tesco offering containing 31g of sugar and the internet sensation that was M&S's strawberries and cream-filled sandwich. The Red Diamond Strawberry and Creme sandwich was priced at £2.80, launched around Wimbledon time in June 2025, and dominated social media. But M&S soon became the butt of the joke after Aldi - once again - re-launched their supermarket feud. The budget retailer is known for its witty social media banter, especially at the expense of M&S, and following the Colin Vs Cuthbert caterpillar cake debacle, Aldi took aim at the strawberry and cream sandwich. Aldi responded to M&S's new creation by 'launching' their own spoof sando, mocking their rival's posh version. The German supermarket's version features carrots and cream on a soft sweetened loaf. However, not everyone was impressed with Tesco's attempt, with one person on another platform complaining: "This is getting ridiculous now!" Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Another chimed in: "What are they going to come up with next? I can't think of anything worse!" Another critic expressed their dismay, writing: "Jeez they will put anything between a couple of slices of bread these days! Just because you can doesn't mean you should!" Tesco offers its meal deal for £3.60 with a Clubcard or £4 without. Tesco states that this price is for the standard meal deal, which includes a choice of a sandwich (now featuring cake), wrap, pasta, or salad, plus a snack and a drink. The Birthday Cake Sandwich is being promoted as a limited edition item, meaning it won't be on the shelves indefinitely. Those curious to sample it should check out the supermarket's grab-and-go section.

Tesco's birthday cake sandwich is leaving shoppers divided
A new sandwich from Tesco is causing a stir with shoppers after going viral on social media. A new birthday cake sandwich has been spotted in the supermarket, with the word spreading across the internet. It comes just weeks after a similar "strange" strawberries and cream sandwich from M&S also made headlines. The new Tesco cake is causing a divide, with some shoppers loving it, but others not so much. Tesco's birthday cake sandwich is leaving shoppers divided A photo was shared of the new Tesco sandwich on the Money Saving Central Facebook group, which has already received hundreds of comments. One person said: "Absolutely not, just when strawberries and cream couldn't get worse." Another added: "Maybe if it was cake cut to look like a sandwich I'd have it but not if it's on bread. Yuck." The sandwich has also been discussed on the Tesco page on Reddit. One confused person said: "What am I actually looking at?" Another described the sandwich as "utter filth", and another said it was "weird". UK Supermarket Rankings 2025 However, not everyone disagrees with the flavour, with some looking forward to trying it. "This reminds me of when I tried sprinkles on buttered bread. Game changer," said one. A second person said: "Is it just me who actually wants it." Some shoppers also compared it to Fairy Bread, which is popular in Australia. Often served at parties, it is sliced white bread spread with butter or margarine and covered with sprinkles. New viral sandwich after M&S controversy The divide over Tesco's new sandwich comes after the M&S strawberries and cream sandwich made waves in the supermarket community. The £2.80 'game-changing' limited edition Red Diamond Strawberry & Creme Sandwich was inspired by Japanese 'sweet sandos', or fruit sandwiches, M&S said. It is filled with the fruit and light whipped cream cheese on fluffy, sweetened bread. Many described the product as "weird", but many others enjoyed the creation. M&S Food first sold freshly made sandwiches in the 1920s, and expanded sales with pre-packed sandwiches in the 1980s.

KFC and Greggs tease new collaboration and people are very excited
Foodies have been sent into a frenzy after Greggs and KFC shared a brief video in which they teased a 'summertime' collaboration and it's left people guessing what the link-up could mean British fast food lovers are licking their lips at the prospect of an unlikely collaboration that could be about to hit high streets across the country. It comes after bakery chain Greggs took to social media to tease a partnership with KFC. On both Instagram and TikTok, Greggs shared a brief video of one of its iconic sausage rolls being held up in front of a KFC restaurant's sign to the sounds of The Sundays' track Summertime and the line: "It's you and me in the summertime." In addition, Greggs added a caption: "Oddly satisfying. Is this a sign?" It prompted theories amongst excited foodies as to what a potential link-up between the two chains could entail. Writing in response on Instagram, one user pondered: "KFC inspired Chicken bake? Instead of creamy sauce in the current chicken bake it'll be KFC gravy? A KFC and gravy style bake? I'm invested." A second person mused: "Or... 'Chicken Bake Royale' - a buttery Greggs pastry filled with KFC's crispy chicken pieces, creamy gravy, and sweetcorn – finished with a flaky top crust. Like a chicken bake on steroids. A third demanded: "Arghhhhh stop teasing! What is it? Zinger roll? Tell me now." Whilst a fourth Instagram user suggested: "Sausage roll covered in KFC batter and fried to perfection and served with a KFC gravy based chippy curry sauce." And a fifth individual declared: "Okay, dipping a Greggs sausage roll in KFC's gravy (I realise while typing this it sounds a bit NSFW)... game changer." Whilst neither company is yet to confirm any collaboration, KFC responded to Greggs "oddly satisfying" remark, simply stating: "I agree." Adding further fuel to the fire, Greggs added: "Fancy seeing you here." Greggs' only previous high street collaboration came in 2022 when it teamed up with retailer, Primark to create a clothing range called 'Tasty'. The limited-edition range - a first for Greggs in its 83-year history - hit 60 Primark stores across the UK in February that year. Speaking at the time, Tim Kelly, Director of New Business Development at Primark said: "We want to give our customers incredible experiences in our stores and offer collections they can't find anywhere else, with brands we know they love. "We're thrilled to have teamed up with Greggs to bring the Tasty Café to our Birmingham store and give fans of the brand the chance to get their hands on the limited-edition clothing range."
