Sharad Pawar Camp Looking For Party Chief Replacement? Leader Says...
Senior NCP (Sharad Pawar) leader and former minister Jayant Patil recently hinted at stepping down from the Maharashtra unit president post. He has been serving as the president for more than seven years now.
According to party sources, he is likely to be replaced by Shashikant Shinde, an MLC and the party's Maratha strongman from Western Maharashtra.
However, in a fresh twist, NCP leader Jitendra Awhad rubbished the report of Mr Patil's resignation. "Jayant Patil Saheb is the state president. The news of his resignation being circulated is nothing but mischief". "The party operates according to rules and discipline," he posted on X.
The sources, meanwhile, said that a formal announcement on Mr Patil's replacement is expected on July 15, when the party will hold a meeting of its office-bearers at the YB Chavan Centre in Mumbai, in the presence of party chief Sharad Pawar.
Jayant Patil had first made his desire to step down public during the party's foundation day event on June 10. In his speech, he thanked Sharad Pawar for the opportunity to serve for seven years and requested to be relieved, saying it was time to give younger leaders a chance. However, he was interrupted by party workers in the audience, who expressed displeasure and did not let him complete his statement.
Shashikant Shinde is seen as being close to Sharad Pawar and Supriya Sule, and is viewed as an important balancing figure in the faction, especially amid internal tensions with Rohit Pawar. His appointment would also signal the party's continued reliance on Western Maharashtra's Maratha leadership as it prepares for the upcoming civic polls.
Mr Patil's tenure saw significant highs and lows for the party - from the formation of the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance and a brief return to power, to the major split in 2023. While the party bounced back with a strong showing in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, it suffered an embarrassing defeat in the Vidhan Sabha polls, winning only 10 seats.
The internal rift between Mr Patil and Rohit Pawar became increasingly evident after the Lok Sabha results, with both leaders exchanging veiled barbs. In June, Mr Patil had remarked:
"Some people are counting the days until my term ends. Give me four months - we'll bring a new government. After that, I'll step down. If you have complaints about me, take them to Sharad Pawar, not to the public."
The leadership change is being seen as a major organisational shift ahead of the civic elections and a possible attempt by Sharad Pawar to reset the party's strategy amid growing generational divides.

Citing the Peking Gazette, whose origins can be traced to the Tang Dynasty's regime, they argued that it was the vehicle for communicating information about governmental action to the people and conveying their feedback to the Emperor – characteristic features of transparent and accountable academics have exposed this propagandist, though noble-intentioned, portrayal of pre-Communist China's administrative practices. Information flows from the capital to the populace were strictly controlled by a conservative bureaucracy, and commenting on the Peking Gazette's contents invited corporal punishment or even the death penalty. Yet, after 20 years of implementing the RTI Act, which emphasises records maintenance, the ECI has shockingly claimed that it is unable to produce a copy of a similar order for the intensive revision of voter lists in Bihar issued in 2003. While the ballot has been digitised, old paper-based files containing a record of the ECI's work seem to have escaped that destiny. Two years ago, its staff told me, a lot of information sent from the states and the districts about recent elections, simply cannot be traced in the multi-storeyed Nirvachan readers dismiss my words as hearsay, here is a sample of election-related records which the ECI claimed, in RTI replies, it does not hold or never received from the states relating to the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. It also rejected a proactive disclosure of the expenditure observers' quizzed about the suspicious transaction reports (STRs) received from banks that are required to monitor large-sized monetary transactions during the campaign, the ECI claimed that no such information is available with it. Refusing to disclose even the number of STRs it received, ECI instructed me to approach the district election officers asked for a copy of the reports ROs send after scrutinising all documents created during polling, the ECI replied that the records sought do not even fall within the definition of 'information' under the RTI Act! In the wake of the controversy about voter turnout figures in Maharashtra last year, the ECI told me, in writing, that it does not have information about the number of voters who were issued pre-numbered tokens to cast their vote after 5 pm even though its election manual requires ROs to submit such reports through their Chief Electoral asked to publish reports sent by the states after mapping Lok Sabha constituencies, or pockets within them, where voters are vulnerable to intimidation and illegal inducement, the ECI claimed that it does not have such information in its records. This lie stands exposed. An RTI activist successfully obtained these vulnerability mapping reports from Maharashtra's Chief Electoral Officer. They were dispatched to the ECI on March 27, 2024!.Much like the no-data-available governments holding fort across the country, the ECI is turning crucial election-related information into sarkari secrets, especially that which is required to establish its accountability. The citizen-State relationship envisioned by the Constitution to guarantee the dignity of every individual is in danger of becoming a master-servant fetter. Bihar seems to be the laboratory for an iniquitous experiment that might soon be repeated across the country.

Dates for local body elections to be announced after completion of exercises, says Maharashtra state election commissioner
Nashik: State election commissioner Dinesh Waghmare said the schedule for the upcoming local body polls would be announced after completing a series of exercises initiated for conducting the elections. "It would not be possible for the state election commission (SEC) to specify the schedule and dates for the elections at this juncture, since important exercises are being carried out to ensure that the polls take place smoothly," Waghmare told TOI. According to him, ward formation exercises are currently underway in the local bodies where the polls will be conducted. "Once this is completed, the SEC would start the task of earmarking the wards that would be reserved in each local body. Thereafter, the preparation of the electoral rolls would take place," he added. There are over 600 local bodies in the state, including 29 municipal corporations and 34 zilla parishads, where the polls will be conducted. Meanwhile, NCP cabinet minister Chhagan Bhujbal predicted the local bodies polls are likely to take place between Nov and Dec 2023. "My feedback is that polls would be held in phases. Initially, the elections for the small local bodies would be held, followed by the polls for the zilla parishads. In the final phase, the polls for the municipal corporations would take place," Bhujbal said. According to Bhujbal, the SEC needs time to prepare well for the polls, which is a huge exercise. A section of the politicians said parties will start their groundwork to contest the polls after the monsoon session of the assembly wraps up.
