Caitlin Clark joins stacked WNBA All-Star 3-Point Contest field

USA Today6 days ago
Things were already shaping up to be an incredible All-Star weekend for Indiana Fever fans. The game and festivities are in Indianapolis, Caitlin Clark was named a captain and three Fever players made the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game roster.
Fans got even more excited after today's announcement from the WNBA.
The league released the contestants for the 2025 WNBA 3-point Contest at this weekend's All-Star break and it's a star-studded group, including Caitlin Clark. Last season, Clark was invited to do the 3-point contest and declined the offer.
Clark will join the competition this season and look to win in front of her home fans.
Who else is in the WNBA 3-point Contest?
Clark is joined in the competition by Sonia Citron, Allisha Gray, Kelsey Plum and Sabrina Ionescu. This is a stacked group of participants, with Gray winning last years contest and Clark, Plum and Ionescu being well-known for their 3-point shooting prowess.
Here's a look at each participant's 3-point shooting percentages this season and in their careers.
Ever since Clark returned from her injury, she's struggled with her 3-point shot as her percentage has dipped under 29% for the season. Clark's home and road splits have been especially concerning when it comes to her shot.
Clark is shooting 27-for-69 (39.1%) from three in eight home games this season. Clark is 1-of-28 (3.6%) from three in four road games this season. That's a concerning trend that needs to get better if the Fever want to make a run, but Clark will get to compete at home for this competition, which bodes well for her chances.
Clark will have a chance to raise that road 3-point percentage when the Fever wrap up the first half of the season with road games against the Connecticut Sun and New York Liberty.
The game against the Sun is scheduled for Tuesday night at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN. The matchup with the Liberty will be Wednesday night with a 6:30 p.m. tipoff on CBS Sports Network. Hawkeye fans can stay updated on those games right here on Hawkeyes Wire.

The StudBudz WNBA livestream had everything from Megan Rapinoe talking strap-ons to dissing Diplo

The WNBA has been gaining popularity every day, but the All Stars weekend might go down in history as the most viral moment the league has ever had, thanks to the StudBudz , now-infamous livestream. It was wild, chaotic, and extremely sapphic. There were dozens of viral moments that came out of the 72-hour-long livestream, but one that fans will likely never forget featured legendary sports couple Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird talking about strapping. Bet you didn't think you'd see that on your 2025 bingo card. WNBA players from teams across the country gather in Indianapolis for the All-Star Game, Skills Challenge, and 3-point contest, and while the talent on display was impressive, fans we're also glued to a 72-hour-straight livestream by the StudBudz, a Twitch channel hosted by Lynx teammates, besties, and certified studs Courtney Williams and Natisha 'T' Heideman. Not only did the livestream confirm some women's basketball dating conspiracy theories, but while Rapinoe and Bird were at the All-Stars weekend to film a live show for their sports podcast, A Touch More, they had a very lesbian moment with the StudBudz that has since gone viral. 'We have to address the best moment on StudBudz. Never? Never strapped,' Rapinoe asked Williams. Is Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum criminally underrated?

It didn't take long for Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum to put together a Hall of Fame resume. The 27-year-old is already a six-time All-Star, four-time All-NBA First Teamer, and an NBA champion. In spite of these impressive accolades, the St. Louis native is constantly underrated. He led the Celtics in playoff points, rebounds, and assists en route to their 2024 title, yet missed out on NBA Finals MVP honors. Later that summer, Tatum was overlooked again at the Olympics, seeing the court for just 11 minutes during Team USA's gold medal game against France. Perhaps Tatum's true value will be on full display next season as he rehabs a ruptured Achilles. The Duke alum could miss the entire 2025-26 campaign, putting the Celtics' championship aspirations in serious jeopardy. But even as he rests, basketball pundits are still trying to rank Tatum. In fact, Bleacher Report just listed him as the 93rd-best player in NBA history, placing him behind arguably less accomplished players like Chris Webber and Jimmy Butler. On a recent episode of NESN's 'Hold My Banner,' hosts Adam Pellerin and Ountae Campbell debated Tatum's standing on the extensive Bleacher Report list, going as far as calling the rankings 'blasphemous.' Uncertainty continues for Fever and Caitlin Clark as her healthy teammates carry their playoff hopes

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indiana Fever thought Caitlin Clark's return might solve their wild first-half ride. They were getting healthy, beating good teams and starting to meet expectations. Then the two-time All-Star got hurt again in the final minute of last Tuesday's game at Connecticut. Indiana lost by double digits the next night to defending champion New York. Clark missed last weekend's All-Star festivities in Indianapolis and is likely to sit out Tuesday night when the Fever again play the Liberty. It's all creating uncertainty about Clark and Indiana's championship aspirations. 'These soft tissue injuries sometimes nag until you can actually have time to really allow them to heal in the offseason,' Indiana coach Stephanie White said after Sunday's practice. 'So we'll just take it one day at a time and we'll continue, as a group, to progress together.' Neither White nor Clark have provided a timetable for Clark's return. As a rookie, Clark helped the Fever snap a six-year playoff drought and during the three-game winning streak before her latest injury, she had 40 points, 29 assists, six steals and 10 turnovers in 79 minutes. Her name and that of the league's other superstars have packed arenas and been the focal point of broadcast deals. Amid a rash of injuries, the WNBA needs its top players on the court more than ever. According to The Next, which tracks injuries in the league, there have been more than 140 injuries so far this season. Those numbers fed into last weekend's debate over whether league officials should consider extending the season next year now that teams are playing 44 games instead of 40. 'I feel there's been quite a few injuries over the course of the beginning of this season for quite a few people,' Clark said Saturday, noting some injuries created minutes restrictions for other All-Star selections. 'A lot of people have been in the same boat as myself.' Simply extending the season creates yet another problem — competing against the NFL and college football telecasts deeper into September. That's something that could be resolved in a new collective bargaining agreement. Until then, though, Indiana must learn to deal with Clark's third absence this season, so far resulting in 10 missed games. Clark did not miss a single game in college or her rookie season with the Fever. Indiana has maintained a winning record (12-11) and playoff positioning despite the injuries. The Fever were also able to win the Commissioner's Cup over Minnesota with a 74-59 win without Clark. The team also overcame the departure of DeWanna Bonner, who lost her starting job after three games and played in only nine before being waived and returning to Phoenix. And, of course, it took time for everyone to get on the same page following a massive offseason overhaul that included the hiring of a new general manager, Amber Cox; the return of White — Indiana's original No. 22; and the addition of other players with title-winning experience. 'I think it's been a rollercoaster ride with peaks and valleys, injuries, switching lineups,' three-time All-Star guard Kelsey Mitchell said. 'I think that's part of being a professional athlete. But I think you need to go through things like this to be one of the teams they talk about at the end of the season.' The Fever believes it still can be one of those teams. With Mitchell leading Indiana in scoring at 19.1 points per game and All-Star center Aliyah Boston showcasing a niftier passing game to go along with averages of 15.8 points and 7.6 rebounds, Indiana still has two of its foundational pillars on the court. Indiana also has more options such as forward Natasha Howard and backup guard Sophie Cunningham to help fill in the gaps until Clark returns. 'Consistency, attention to detail, making sure defensively we're a beast unit,' Cunningham said as she identified other needed fixes. 'I think it all starts on the defensive end with our intensity and our aggressiveness. When we do that, we tend to win those ballgames. You're going to have a little bit of slippage every now and then, but you can't have landslides.' Ultimately, though, the lingering question is whether Clark can stay healthy long enough to push Indiana into championship position. 'Working your way back into it is really difficult,' White said. 'She has to give herself some grace. She's coming back from an injury.' ___ AP WNBA:
