Shashi Tharoor Excluded From Congress's Nilambur Campaigners List, Says He 'Wasn't Invited'
Last Updated:
Shashi Tharoor has been excluded from the party's star campaigners list for the Nilambur by-poll, reportedly after he alleged he wasn't invited to campaign.
Congress has reportedly excluded MP Shashi Tharoor from its list of star campaigners for the by-poll for the Nilambur Assembly constituency in Kerala.
The development, according to media reports, came after Tharoor alleged he was not invited by his party to campaign in Nilambur.
The Congress MP had publicly expressed displeasure, explaining why he did not go for the election campaign there.
'In Wayanad, there was a sign of campaigning for Priyanka (Gandhi). It is true that there are some differences of opinion with the present Congress leadership, but responding more will not put the party in crisis on election day," Tharoor was quoted as saying.
'I was not invited by the party for campaigning, but that's alright, because I too, at that time, was abroad," he said, referring to his delegation's visit to significant world capitals to highlight India's stand against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and its zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism.
'I want to wish our candidate only the best. I have known him for a long time personally. The congress cadres who went from Trivandrum informed me the campaign was good," Tharoor said.
Voting in the by-poll for the Nilambur Assembly constituency in Kerala commenced at 7 am on Thursday.
Polling commenced amidst tight security arrangements, including the deployment of central security forces and police, along with live monitoring of the by-election process through an extensive webcasting system.
People began arriving early in the morning at the 263 polling booths across the constituency, which has over 2.32 lakh voters who will elect their representative from among 10 candidates.
Among the 10, the key contenders are ruling LDF pick M Swaraj, Aryadan Shoukath (Congress-led UDF), Trinamool Congress state convener and independent candidate PV Anvar and Mohan George of the BJP-led NDA.
The by-election was necessitated after Anvar resigned as MLA of the constituency following his severing of ties with the CPI(M)-led LDF over certain allegations by him against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his close aides.

Karnataka Government Increases Housing Quota For Muslim Community From 10% To 15%
Reported By: Prashobh Devanahalli In a significant move aimed at enhancing social welfare, the Karnataka government has approved an increase in the housing quota for the Muslim community under various housing schemes. The reservation has been raised from the existing 10 per cent to 15 per ecnt, following a proposal passed in today's cabinet meeting. The decision will be applicable to all housing initiatives run by the state's Department of Housing in both rural and urban areas. The revised quota is expected to benefit a larger section of the Muslim population, ensuring better access to government-supported housing projects. While addressing the media, Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar said, 'This decision has been taken keeping in mind the population ratio and the underutilization of several housing projects. It is essential to fill these vacancies, and the Muslim community, given its population share, deserves increased representation in welfare housing." He also took a swipe at the opposition, stating, 'The BJP has no agenda other than playing politics in the name of Muslims. Our government is committed to inclusive development, and this move is a step in that direction.' The Congress-led state government had earlier introduced provisions to extend reservation benefits to minority communities in government contracts as well. This latest move adds another layer of affirmative action targeting improved living conditions for minorities, particularly the Muslim community. The enhanced quota is expected to roll out soon, with guidelines being framed for its implementation.

Karnataka hikes housing scheme quota for minorities from 10% to 15%
The Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday (June 19, 2025) approved a proposal to increase the reservation from 10% to 15% for minorities under various State government housing schemes. Briefing the Cabinet decisions after the meeting, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil said the move was based on the disproportionately high number of houseless individuals among minority communities in both urban and rural areas. Muslims form the bulk of the minority population in Karnataka. Norm in Centre The Law Minister pointed out that the Centre had issued guidelines and it had already provides 15% allocation for minorities, and Karnataka was following it. Minority communities have long been requesting the hike in quota in the housing schemes, he added. The decision will apply to all housing schemes implemented by different departments, including Housing and Urban Development, across the State. While the opposition BJP criticised it as 'appeasement politics', Mr. Patil said the decision showed the government's commitment to equitable housing. ''Housing for All' is the key slogan of the Congress government, and we are committed to ensuring that every citizen has access to a home,' he said. Many houseless individuals belong to downtrodden communities and minorities, and the decision to increase the quota reflects this ground reality, he said. Defending the decision, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said, 'There is a large urban population, and many minorities and poor people are part of it.'
