Maharashtra legilsative assembly okays bill to book drug peddlers under MCOCA
Speaking on the amendment, BJP MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar urged state govt to consider giving the death penalty to drug peddlers and setting up fast-track courts to try them.
He said that hundreds of crores were being made from drugs and that money was used to defeat political opponents.
Highlighting the massive pendency in courts, resulting in drug peddlers and even corrupt officials involved not being punished, Mungantiwar said: "...In lower courts across Maharashtra, there are over 56 lakh pending cases, and in the high court, close to six lakh cases are pending. The entire justice system is not working.
Hundreds of judge posts are vacant, giving rise to pendency...state govt must fill up all judicial posts."
Minister of State for Home (MoS) Yogesh Kadam, who introduced the bill, said drugs like hydro ganja and synthetic drugs were being peddled through networks and stringent laws were needed to crack the peddlers' network. He mentioned that in the last five years, over 10,000 people were booked for possessing commercial quantities, and narcotics worth Rs 11,000 crore seized, of which Rs 10,000 crore were synthetic drugs.

BJP MLA Ameet Satam said the success of the amendment would only depend on its enforcement by the police.
The bill stated that any illegal act that is continued will now include any persons who "cultivates, produces, manufactures, possesses, sells, purchases, transports, or stores narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances in commercial quantities, as notified under the said Act, in contravention of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, or the rules made thereunder, for the purpose of obtaining pecuniary advantage for himself or any other person, or of obtaining undue pecuniary or other advantage.

Family held hostage in taxi as cabbie attempts to outrun cops in Noida, accused held
A cab driver has been arrested after he held a family "hostage" during their ride as Noida Police chased the speeding car for deliberately jumping barricades, officials said on Saturday (August 16, 2025). PCR sirens blaring in the background, a four-year-old frightened girl crying, and her parents pleading with the driver to stop the vehicle — showed a video of the nerve-racking incident recorded by the family. Noida Phase 3 Police said the accused has been arrested and two Aadhaar cards were found in his possession — one in the name of 'Nasim' and another 'Sonu'. On Thursday at around 1.30 p.m., Sanjay Mohan booked a cab for Delhi's Connaught Place from his home in Greater Noida. Mr. Mohan, his wife and their four-year-old daughter sat in the cab and started their ride. However, at Parthala bridge in Noida, police signalled the driver to stop but he sped off, jumping the barricades, the police said. Stunned by the driver's sudden move, the couple requested him to stop the car and drop them off. However, he ignored and began driving rashly for several kilometers to escape the PCR van chasing him, they said. The couple kept pleading and when the driver managed to outrun the police team, he stopped the vehicle for barely a few seconds at TP Nagar. As soon as the family got down, he fled, they said. The entire incident was recorded by the family. It surfaced on social media on Friday, prompting officials to identify and nab the accused, the police said. Central Noida DCP Shakti Mohan Awasthy said, "A viral video of rash driving of a cab driver went viral on August 14. Police registered a case against him at Phase 3 Police Station and later the driver identified as Nasim was arrested from Sahara cut.' 'The Wagon R has been seized and a challan of Rs 29,500 was issued," he said. According to Mr. Mohan, his wife suffered minor injuries in her hand. A case has been registered against the accused under BNS sections 137 (2) (kidnapping), 127 (2) (wrongful confinement), 281 (rash driving), 319 (cheating by personation, 318 (4) (cheating), 336 (2) (forgery), 338 (forgery of valuable security) and others at Phase 3 Police Station, they said.

Mumbai businessman loses Rs 5.24 cr in investment scam; four held
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Mumbai, Aug 16 (PTI) Four cyber fraudsters have been arrested for allegedly duping a businessman from Mumbai of Rs 5.24 crore by posing as executives of a Dubai-based investment company, police said on Saturday. The fraud came to light after the accused themselves invited the victim to Dubai, where he found that the company does not exist, an official said. A probe has revealed that the accused, who were recently apprehended from different parts of the country, had used the same modus operandi to cheat people of more than Rs 65 crore in Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune and Kerala, an official said. Three of the accused have been identified as R. Menon (35), Manikandan (32) and H. Pandi, he said. The official said that in October last year, a 65-year-old businessman from the western suburbs received a call from one of the accused, who posed as an employee of a Dubai-based investment company. The caller offered him attractive returns on investment in the company, he said. As the businessman showed interest in investing, the caller introduced him to the firm's director, who offered him 10 per cent returns per month and shares of the same value of the company, the official said. He said that the complainant then deposited money in November and noticed that the bank account used for the transaction was a personal account. On inquiry, the firm's director claimed that the account belonged to an employee and that the sum would be transferred to the company, the official said. In March, the accused invited the complainant for a visit to Dubai, where he found that the firm, in which he had invested Rs 5.24 crore over four months, did not exist. The official said when the businessman tried to contact the firm's owner, he was told that the latter was in the US, and when he demanded the return of his investment, the accused allegedly sent him fake cheques, demand drafts and other documents.
