The Opposition 's relentless protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar paralysed the functioning of the Lok Sabha yet again on Friday, with two forced adjournments, even as the floor leaders of Opposition parties wrote a letter to Speaker Om Birla demanding an urgent discussion on the SIR.The protest forced the first adjournment till 2pm. When the House reassembled, the Opposition members resumed their sloganeering. They carried placards and walked into the well of the House. Krishna Prasad Tenneti, who was presiding over the proceedings, warned the members against carrying placards and asked them to return to their seats. Papers were laid on the table and matters of public importance under Rule 377 were submitted amid the din. Tenneti repeatedly appealed to the Opposition to allow the House to function. The Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill 2024 was listed for consideration and passing. Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal accused the Opposition of being anti-tribals.The House was adjourned for the day within nine minutes. In their letter to Birla, the Opposition floor leaders said, "This (SIR in Bihar) is unprecedented. ECI has indicated that similar exercises will soon be undertaken across the country. Given the widespread apprehension about the transparency, timing, and intent of this process, the matter requires the urgent attention of the House." The signatories to the letter included the leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Gaurav Gogoi (Congress), TR Baalu (DMK), Supriya Sule (NCP-SP), Lalji Verma (SP), Kakoli Ghose Dastidar (AITC), Arvind Savant (SS-UBT), Abhay Kumar (RJD) and N K Premachandran (RSP).

Bihar draft rolls: ‘Husband Husband', ‘father voter ID card' instead of names, EC takes action after errors flagged

After social media users pointed out some errors in the draft electoral roll of Bihar published on August 1, a month after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Election Commission officials said Sunday that they would rectify those and action would be taken against Booth Level Officers (BLOs) responsible. Among the errors flagged were 'husband husband', 'father father', 'father voter ID card' and 'Election Commission of India' written instead of the names of the husband or parent of some electors. The mistakes, according to EC sources, pertained to Chapra Assembly constituency of Saran district. The names had been included with the same errors in the second supplementary electoral roll issued in March, they said. For example, in one booth in Chapra, a 22-year-old woman elector's father's name was mentioned as 'father father'; husbands of two women were mentioned as 'husband husband'; a 21-year-old woman's father's name was shown as 'father's voter ID card', and a 19-year-old woman's mother's name was listed as 'Election Commission of India'. Saran District Magistrate Aman Samir, who is also the District Election Officer, said in a statement on Sunday that an inquiry has been initiated and action would be taken against the BLO in-charge at the time and the new BLO as well. Samir said that four names, with the errors, had been in the rolls before the SIR and that Form-8 — for making corrections to entries on rolls — were also processed. The names were added using the BLO app sometime between January 2025 and March 2025, the DM said. Electors and political parties can file claims and objections from August 1 to September 1, either to include or remove a name from draft rolls. As of 3 pm Sunday, the EC statement said that 941 claims and objections have been filed by electors, while nothing has been filed by the Booth Level Agents (BLAs) of national or state parties. As per the EC's order on June 24, all 7.89 crore Bihar electors were required to fill the enumeration forms by July 25, to be included in the draft rolls. After the month-long exercise, a total of 7.24 crore electors were included, while 65 lakh removed since the EC found that some were dead, others had permanently shifted, enrolled in multiple places or untraceable. The final roll will be published on September 30. Those who registered after January 1, 2003, when the last intensive revision was conducted, are required to submit documents establishing their eligibility, which includes citizenship, by September 1. Malegaon verdict ‘slap on the faces' of those who used the term ‘saffron terror', says Pragya Thakur

Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Pragya Singh Thakur, who was recently acquitted in the 2008 Malegaon blasts case, said on Sunday (August 3, 2025) in Bhopal that the court verdict was a 'slap on the faces' of those who used terms such as 'saffron terror' to describe the incident. ''Satyamev Jayate' (truth always triumphs), which has been said in our scriptures, has been proven. Those who used to say bhagwa atankwad (saffron terrorism), their faces have been blackened. The society and the country have given them a solid reply. The court's decision is crystal clear and it is a slap on the faces of those who called it saffron terror,' Ms. Thakur, a former Lok Sabha member from Bhopal, said after arriving at Bhopal. The court said that the prosecution had failed to prove its case, including the allegation that the motorcycle on which the bomb was allegedly strapped belonged to Ms. Thakur. Speaking to media persons outside Bhopal's Raja Bhuj International Airport, Ms. Thakur dubbed the court's verdict a 'victory of religion and truth'. She reiterated her claims that, during her time in jail, she had been 'pressurised and tortured' into naming several senior political and social leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was the Chief Minister of Gujarat at the time. I didn't take those names; I didn't act as they wanted me to. So, they tortured me. Those names especially included Mohan Bhagwat, Ram Madhav, PM Modi, Yogi Adityanath, Indresh Kumar and other leaders,' Ms. Thakur said. The court, however, rejected her claims of torture while noting that Ms. Thakur had not raised any such complaint when she was produced before a magistrate following her arrest.

Ahead of monsoon session, Congress remains indecisive about CLP leader

Chandigarh: Yet another session of Haryana assembly is likely to pass without the leader of opposition as the Congress party remains indecisive about its choice of the Congress legislature party (CLP) head. Haryana assembly is scheduled to convene for the monsoon session from Aug 22. This will be the third session of the current House in which the main opposition party, the Congress, will remain without a leader. The party has also not announced district and state-level executives so far. The issue remains unresolved for over a decade now. During this period, Haryana witnessed three Lok Sabha and three assembly elections. Except for the AICC-nominated state presidents and their handful of executives, there was no district or block executive on the ground. While the party had failed to garner sufficient numbers in the 2014 assembly elections for the appointment of the leader of opposition, Bhupinder Singh Hooda held the post between 2019 and 2024. In the current session of the assembly, despite having 37 MLAs, the Congress has not been able to name the leader of the opposition. Similarly, the party has also failed to announce the district-level executives. According to senior AICC leaders, including B K Hariparsad – party general secretary and in charge of Haryana, the district congress committees were supposed to be declared by July 31. Same was the case for the announcement of the state Congress president and the CLP leader. Surprisingly, the delay in announcements is despite the leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi, giving clear directions in June to ensure the completion of the process by the first week of July. "We have completed the entire process and the district Congress committee lists will be out any day during this week. This will be followed by a decision on the CLP leader and other office bearers," said Hariparsad.
