I-Day: Tricolour to be hoisted at 85 Amrit Sarovar lakes in Mysuru district
Marking the Independence Day, the ZP will hoist the tricolour at 85 Amrit Sarovar sites developed under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), spreading the message of water conservation under the slogan 'One Lake, One Resolution'.
'As per government directives, we have arranged to hoist the tricolour at 85 lakes developed under MGNREGA in Mysuru district to create awareness among people about these water bodies. The event will highlight the importance of water conservation,' said S. Yukesh Kumar, Chief Executive Officer, Zilla Panchayat, Mysuru
The tricolour will be unfurled by freedom fighters or their family members, family members of post-independence martyrs, local Padma awardees, or senior citizens.
The celebrations will feature rangoli competitions for women; essay writing and poetry competitions on water conservation and climate change; plays on environmental conservation; cleanliness drives, planting of saplings, and painting competitions by school and college students; and storytelling sessions with freedom fighters and Padma awardees.
Bheemappa K. Lali, Deputy Secretary (Development), Zilla Panchayat, Mysuru, said, 'We are celebrating Independence Day at all 85 lakes developed under MGNREGA to pledge our commitment to protecting water sources. Senior citizens, freedom fighters, social workers, and eminent personalities will participate as guests.'

DYFI launches protest against BJP tying rakhi on anganwadi students
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: DYFI workers on Saturday took out a protest in front of the Varkala child development project officer's (CDPO) office after photos of BJP leaders tying rakhis on anganwadi children as part of the Independence Day celebrations went viral on social media platforms. Close to 25 protesters were arrested and later released, said a DYFI leader who alleged that the BJP and RSS leaders tied rakhis (a sacred thread tied on brothers by their sisters) to the students of 11 anganwadis. 'On August 14, the CDPO instructed the teachers through a WhatsApp voice note that rakhis should be tied to the students as part of the Independence Day celebrations. The rakhis, similar to those worn by Sangh affiliates, were tied to the hands of the children,' DYFI leader Lenin Raj told the TNIE. He said that six anganwadis in Elakamon, three in Idava, and two in the Varkala municipality conducted similar programmes on Wednesday. Adding that children, too, might have tied rakhis amongst themselves, the leader stated that DYFI sees the incident as an extension of the RSS saffronisation propaganda. However, the CDPO refuted the allegations. 'My instruction was to tie rakhis to children, as many of them loved making tricolour rakhis, and were urged to wear one,' she told the TNIE. The officer said that she forgot to mention the term 'tricolour' in the voice note, which she sent to the teachers, and called it a 'fault' from her side. Mentioning that the BJP leaders who tied these rakhis were the ward councillors, she said that no RSS leader was part of these programmes anywhere. 'I have no political interest in this,' she mentioned, adding that there will be only a maximum of five anganwadis where such an event happened. Meanwhile, BJP ward councillor Priya Gopan termed the controversy 'unwanted'. 'Who said that rakhi was part of RSS politics? There is no law that bans the tying of rakhis,' the Kannamba councillor told the TNIE.

Gadag residents get magic button to solve plaints in 24 hrs
GADAG: In a first, Gadag town has got a 'magic button' that allows people to register their complaints that are promised to be solved within 24 hours. Once the magic button is pressed, the complaint is registered and recorded on a website. Command centre officials get the details of the complainant and complaint, which is immediately sent to the concerned department heads, like the deputy commissioner, superintendent of police, zilla panchayat chief executive officer and others. These magic button centres, two of which were inaugurated on Independence Day, will be set up at different places and people can register their complaints regarding the safety of women and children, protection of senior citizens, illegal middlemen, road safety measures, anti-social activities, suspicious objects, land rights cases, pension-related issues, corruption, panchayat services and others. Residents have to give their thumb prints and the machine automatically takes their photo. When they press the button, the command centre, which works 24x7, asks details of the complaint, and forwards it to departments concerned. The idea of this electronic complaint system was first mooted by Law and Tourist minister HK Patil. The magic button will work like the 'Bell of Justice' of olden days which were placed in front of palaces. On Independence Day, magic button centres were inaugurated at KH Patil Stadium and Javalagalli area. One of the centres was inaugurated by HK Patil. The magic button strategy is termed Prabhuvinedege Prajaprabhutva, which means 'democracy at one's doorsteps'. Ramu Vaggi was the first complainant and he inaugurated the booth along with the minister.
