It Starts On The Page (Drama): Read ‘Paradise' Episode 1 Script 'Wildcat Is Down' With Foreword By Dan Fogelman

Editor's note: Deadline's It Starts on the Page (Drama) features 10 standout drama series scripts in 2025 Emmy contention.
In his follow-up to his acclaimed NBC family drama This Is Us, Dan Fogelman switched genres — and mixed genres, too — with Hulu's Paradise, a political thriller that incorporates elements of apocalyptic science fiction. It marked Fogelman's first series creation for streaming where he already had a hit with Hulu's Only Murders in the Building, which he executive produces.

It also reunited Fogelman and his Emmy-winning This Is Us star Sterling K. Brown, who headlines Paradise as Secret Service Agent Xavier Collins. Season 1's official logline sets up the pilot episode, 'Wildcat Is Down,' written by Fogelman and directed by his frequent collaborators Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, who also helmed the This Is Us pilot: Paradise takes place in a serene community inhabited by some of the world's most prominent individuals. But this tranquility explodes when a shocking murder occurs, and a high-stakes investigation unfolds.
In addition to setting up the series, in its final seconds, the premiere serves the first of Paradise's many jaw-dropping twists.
Here is the script for 'Wildcat is Down' with an intro by Fogelman. In it, he reveals how a kernel of an idea he got more a decade ago from a loud construction noise during his drive home from a business meeting with a powerful Hollywood type led to Paradise.
About a year after This Is Us ended, I started feeling the familiar itch to get off my ass and write something new for television. I mused on multiple ideas but kept returning to a specific kernel of a notion – a notion I'd had over a decade earlier. The backstory: As a much younger writer I once found myself in a general meeting with a powerful player in our industry – a person of great reach, resource, and wealth. As I chatted with him (or her, I'll never tell) I was struck by the design (and size) of their office, the seemingly infinite reach of their rolodex and power. While that person talked to me, my mind wandered and I started wondering if I was in the room with my first ever billionaire.I started musing how many people worked to make that person's life run smoothly.I was young(er), I was nervous, I don't remember what we talked about. But on the drive home, a large crane at a nearby construction site dropped something. There was a loud BOOM. I jumped, then realized this wasn't a mass casualty event… simply a loud everyday construction noise. Then I thought about the person I'd just met with – this person of seemingly unearthly wealth and power. I thought of all the people who worked to serve that person and I wondered: 'If the sh*t ever hit the fan for real, wouldn't those people all run to their own people? Wouldn't they abandon the person they are employed to serve?I started thinking of the interplay of those in power and those who serve them. I started imagining someone whose job it was to literally take a bullet for a person in immense power – a secret service agent to a President. I started thinking about billionaires, and the strange power their wealth provides, and I started wondering… what if the loud BOOM I'd heard had been real. And what if people with immense power knew it was coming, and had the time to gather their resources and plan for it… so that when it happened, they wouldn't be left in the lurch like the rest of us.I started imagining a pilot with a late surprise – one that revealed that the Presidential murder mystery the audience thought they were watching, was really something else. And then I sat on the idea for over a decade. But fast forward ten or so years, I was getting that post This Is Us writing itch, and I returned to idea. I wrote the screenplay first, refusing to acknowledge even to myself that I was clearly writing the lead agent role for Sterling K. Brown, and refusing to commit to it as a TV series until I sat with my producing partner Jess Rosenthal and my two friends (and eventual senior writer/producers) John Hoberg and Scott Weinger to chat with experts and figure out what exactly this series was beyond the pilot.Once I had that, we shared it with our supportive partners at 20th, Disney, and Hulu — and then my old pals Sterling K. Brown, John Requa, Glenn Ficarra, and Steve Beers — and we were off to the races… shooting an idea that I'd been thinking about for over a decade… an idea born out of a meeting with a rich guy (or gal) and one hell of a loud boom.

From Viral Ad To $8 Soap: How Sydney Sweeney Turned Fan Obsession Into A Marketing Goldmine

A limited-edition soap reportedly containing a small amount of Sydney Sweeney's bathwater will go on sale for $8 this week. The Emmy-nominated "Euphoria" star partnered with men's grooming brand Dr. Squatch to launch Sydney's Bathwater Bliss. The campaign originated from a Dr. Squatch advertisement featuring Sweeney in a bubble bath promoting the brand's natural body wash. Originally released in October, the video went viral and sparked a wave of social media memes and comments centered around the idea of her bathwater. Don't Miss: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing — Invest where it hurts — and help millions heal:. 'You kept asking about my bathwater after the @drsquatch ad... so we kept it,' she wrote in an Instagram post on Thursday announcing the soap launch. The product's description markets it as blending the outdoors and Sweeney's bathtub, with ingredients like pine, Douglas fir, and a 'touch' of her bathwater labeled as one of nature's finest aphrodisiacs. The brand announced a limited run of 5,000 units of Sydney's Bathwater Bliss, set to go on sale on June 6. To build hype ahead of the release, Dr. Squatch is distributing 100 bars through a pre-launch Instagram giveaway contest, according to People magazine. Targeting Gen Z men, a key demographic for Dr. Squatch, the brand has heavily invested in TikTok advertising, spending $3.6 million in the first eight months of 2021, according to Marketing Dive. This campaign continues that trend, leveraging social media buzz and limited availability to generate anticipation ahead of the product's release. Trending: The launch of Sydney's Bathwater Bliss sparked mixed reactions across the internet. Reddit users debated the ethics and hygiene of using real bathwater in a commercial product, with threads questioning the limits of celebrity branding and personal fluid use in skincare. "Fans always joke about wanting my bath water... I was like, this is just such a cool way to have a conversation with the audience and give them what they want," Sweeney told GQ. She described the soap as having an outdoorsy scent of pine, earthy moss, and fir—also known as the brand's signature Morning Wood fragrance—mixed with some city bath water. "There's no playbook for turning Sydney Sweeney's actual bath water into a bar of soap," Dr. Squatch Senior Vice President of Global Marketing John Ludeke said in a statement to The New York Times. "But that's exactly why we did it." He added that the goal was to spark conversations about men's personal care campaign draws on a history of provocative celebrity product stunts that captured public attention. Gwyneth Paltrow's 2020 launch of the 'This Smells Like My Vagina' candle, made headlines and sold out quickly. In 2019, internet personality Belle Delphine generated over $90,000 in profits after selling jars of her so-called "GamerGirlBathWater' at $30 a piece. Sydney's Bathwater Bliss builds on past instances of bold celebrity branding—leveraging star power, limited supply, and unconventional marketing to spark viral interest and strong consumer demand. The full Alien: Earth trailer is finally here and it's a doozy

In space, no one can hear you, uh, stream. We finally have a real trailer for the upcoming Alien: Earth TV series and it looks extremely cool. FX dropped a teaser a few months back, but that was just vibes. This is an actual two-minute trailer that's absolutely packed with footage. For the uninitiated, Alien: Earth is the first TV series in the franchise's long history and is being helmed by Noah Hawley. That's the guy who made the Fargo TV series and the criminally underrated Marvel show Legion . Franchise creator Ridley Scott is also on board as an executive producer. To view this content, you'll need to update your privacy settings. Please click here and view the "Content and social-media partners" setting to do so. This is a prequel that's set just two years before the original film. As the name suggests, it takes place on Earth. The trailer indicates the story will involve a ship crashing into a large corporate-controlled city. This vessel may or may not have a fearsome Xenomorph aboard, among other notable alien species. A character in the clip says that the ship "collected five different life forms from the darkest corners of the universe," going on to suggest that one is "predatory." That's right. We could be getting a dang Predator in our Alien TV show. Alien: Earth premieres on August 12 on FX and will be available to stream on Hulu. The show stars Sydney Chandler as a hybrid robot/human lifeform tasked with investigating the crash. The rest of the cast includes Timothy Olyphant, Alex Lawther and Samuel Blenkin, among others.
