NMC to spend Rs2,100cr on resurfacing 61 major roads

Time of India5 days ago
Nashik: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to undertake a Rs2,100 crore initiative to resurface as many as 61 major roads throughout the city.
This large-scale infrastructure project is for the upcoming
Kumbh Mela
, which the city is set to host between 2026 and 2028.
The road development will happen in three phases. The first phase will cover 23 major roads, including sections of Nashik's existing inner, middle, and outer ring roads. They are vital as they connect to national and state highways, particularly in the Panchavati, Nashik Road, and Nashik East divisions. The civic body also plans to widen some of these roads where possible.
The second phase will see development of 29 roads, including the significant Shahi Marg.
And the third phase will involve re-laying of nine roads. This extensive upgrade of the road network aims to significantly improve connectivity and infrastructure, preparing the city for the large number of devotees expected for the Kumbh Mela. Nashik is one of four cities that hosts Kumbh Mela every 12 years. The last Mela was held in 2015.
"We will require around Rs373 crore for developing the road network by March 2026.
The remaining amount will be required in phases during the next financial year," the official said.
"The civic administration has prepared a Rs15,000-crore plan for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela and submitted it to state govt for approval. Of the total amount, the public works department has proposed Rs4,000 crore for road works, construction of nine bridges, and other works," the official added.
During the recent meetings, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis instructed the NMC and other authorities concerned to undertake those works which will need around two years for completion. Accordingly, the NMC completed the tender process and finalised a private agency for the construction of sewage treatment plants, sewage pumping stations and diversion of sewage from the 22 nullahs towards nearby STPs. The total cost of these sewage management works is around Rs1,475 crore.
The civic body also started the tender process for the construction of the five bridges and strengthening of the Gadge Maharaj bridge. Apart from the STPs and bridges, the NMC has also prioritised road works.

Nagpur up 5 spots in swachh ranking after NMC's appeal

Nagpur: The city's ranking in the Swachh Bharat Survekshan improved following an appeal by the civic body. The Union ministry of housing and urban affairs has now placed Nagpur at rank 22A (out of 40), up from its earlier position of 27. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The revised ranking was confirmed on its national dashboard, with municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari sharing the update on Wednesday. Nagpur's state ranking also saw a rise — from 29 to 25A out of 414 urban local bodies in Maharashtra. The city's overall score now stands at 9,836 out of 12,500, up from the previous 9,328, additional municipal commissioner Vasumana Pant told TOI. To a query, Pant explained that since Nashik already held the 22nd rank, Nagpur has been assigned 22A to reflect its equal standing. As a result, the 27th position in the national ranking list now remains vacant, the Swachh Survekshan results website stated. The improvement followed NMC's detailed representation under the guidance of Chaudhari, pointing out discrepancies in the initial assessment. "We highlighted major mismatches in legacy data related to daily waste collection and vehicle tracking over the past three years. After verification, a fresh site visit was conducted, and our claims were accepted," said Pant. Key metrics show substantial progress. Door-to-door waste collection surged from 30% to 90%, while segregation at source improved dramatically from 1% to 60%. However, waste processing, which was earlier marked at 100%, was revised to 60% following a stricter re-evaluation. The city has now also earned one star under the Garbage-Free City (GFC) certification — a benchmark it failed to achieve earlier this year. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Nagpur's score was already contentious. About 30% in door-to-door collection and 1% at source segregation were surprising. The scores in these two parameters increased to 90% and 60%, which gave us 500 in GFC certification were we had earlier scored zero," Kaustav Chatterjee, Swachhata ambassador said. The earlier ranking sparked sharp criticism from citizens and within the civic administration, where officials admitted that weak inter-departmental coordination and poor documentation hampered performance. The latest recognition reflects growing momentum in the city's cleanliness efforts. Even in Swachh Survekshan 2023, Nagpur was placed 86th among 400 cities with a population above one lakh. The NMC objected to this categorisation, insisting that Nagpur should have been evaluated in the million-plus category. Major recent initiatives include the 'Swachhata Hi Seva' campaign, Backlane Cleanliness Drive, compressed biogas facility, C&D waste plant, and biomining project at Bhandewadi. Citizen-led programs like 'One Date, One Hour', Swachh Mohalla, Clean Market initiatives, Eco Bricks, and awareness campaigns in schools have further boosted community participation. In a statement, Chaudhari said Nagpur's progress was acknowledged in a recent central govt report for its participatory initiatives. He added that NMC now aims to push for a Top 10 rank in upcoming surveys by intensifying cleanliness efforts across all zones.

The discovered price translates to around $596.23/tonne. The tender called for the production and supply of 724,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually across 13 fertilizer plants in this tranche which were listed in the tender. Some of the procurers enlisted in the bidding document were Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO) in Kandla, Madras Fertilisers' Manali and Chennai units, Indorama India in Haldia, Mangalore Chemicals & Fertilisers' Panambur unit and Coromandel International's Visakhapatnam unit. Live Events The reverse auction for price discovery is being done separately for each plant and in phases because of the complexity of bid evaluation, according to an industry official. SECI anchored the demand aggregation and will sign long-term offtake agreements, providing producers with market certainty over a 10-year contract period. The tender was issued in June 2024 and the last date was July 10 after many extensions over the year. The government is offering financial incentives under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, with Production Linked Incentives (PLI) of Rs 8.82/kg, Rs 7.06/kg, and Rs 5.30/kg for the first three years respectively, amounting to a total support of Rs 1,533.4 crore. India consumes approximately 17-19 million tonnes of ammonia annually, with more than 50% of its hydrogen requirement used in fertilizer production. However, most of this is derived from imported natural gas. Producing green hydrogen emits less than 2 kg of CO₂ per kilogram, compared to up to 12 kg CO₂ from conventional grey hydrogen, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
