Smoke fills aircraft cabin after phone charger catches fire onboard
A plane cabin filled with smoke after a phone charger ignited onboard a flight.
Panicked passengers covered their mouths with scarves and blankets after a power bank suddenly burst into flames in an overhead locker.
Thick smoke quickly poured into the cabin of the KLM Boeing 777 bound for Amsterdam.
A clip of the incident flight showed cabin crew walking up the aisles wearing smoke hoods while clutching fire extinguishers.
The flight, from Sao Paulo, Brazil, continued safely to its final destination.
Simeone Malagoli, who was on board Flight KL792 on August 7, said the journey was 'one of the tensest' of his life.
No injuries were reported on board.
Lithium batteries, such as those found within power banks, have been linked to several emergencies on aircraft.
Due to safety concerns, items containing lithium batteries, including laptops and mobile phones are banned from hold luggage, with passengers required to carry them in the cabin.
When a battery fails, it can undergo thermal runaway, a rapid, violent reaction in which one or more cells rupture.
This releases toxic, flammable, and explosive gases, creating an intense, self-sustaining fire that is extremely difficult to extinguish in flight.
Earlier this year, 176 passengers were evacuated off a plane in South Korea after flames engulfed the entire fuselage before takeoff. More Trending
Three people on board the flight on January 28 sustained minor injuries.
The Airbus A321 aircraft was operated by Air Busan on a flight from Gimhae International Airport, Busan to Hong Kong.
Authorities said the incident was likely caused by a portable power bank stored in an overhead bin which caught fire after the insulation within it broke down.

Venice locals furious as 'secret' €2 gondola hack goes viral
Locals in Venice aren't happy after influencers tipped tourists off about cheap gondola rides across the Grand Canal. Residents of the iconic Italian city are protesting the long queues that have been forming on Venice's main waterway for ferries known as traghetti , which cost 70 cents (60p) for locals and €2 (£1.75) for visitors. Considering a gondola ride will set you back up to €90 (£79) for 30 minutes, the ferries are being touted by influencers like YouTuber Giovanna Santoro as an easy way to get a selfie on the water, for a fraction of the cost. Described as 'one of Venice's great transport secrets', disgruntled locals – beleaguered by years of overtourism – say they're suffering now that the secret is out. It's not the first travel gem that's been exposed to the masses. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The Faroe Islands may be off the beaten track compared to other European destinations, but even this isolated archipelago is struggling to manage tourists. During her visit in June, residents on the uber-remote Fugloy island told Metro's Travel Editor Alice Murphy that visitors had been booking up the cheap, government-subsidised helicopter seats that locals rely on to get around. And the evidence is there on social media. Travel blogger Rowan Flora recently shared how she took a 12-minute helicopter ride from Klaksvik to Torshavn (the Faroese capital) for just £25. She said it was 'incredibly cheap' and 'a bargain' on her Call of the World blog. Since there are only 12 bookable seats on each leg, they go quickly, and trips to each port via air aren't offered daily. It's hardly news that Spaniards are unimpressed with tourists. From banning pub crawls to residents-only areas, several measures have been rolled out to combat the influx of visitors. But it doesn't stop there. Calo des Moro, a once lesser-known Mallorcan cove, has been swamped with tourists after influencers posted more than 1,300 TikToks of the location online. Once picturesque with white sand and crystal-clear water, now there are queues just to find a place to lay a towel, and litter is strewn everywhere. More than 300 locals hit the beach last June, unveiling a big banner that read 'let's occupy our beaches', in an attempt to deter holidaymakers. One local shouted at visitors to 'go, go, go' while others blocked the paths. Another glorious attraction said to be ruined by tourists is Rome's Trevi Fountain. While it's not a secret, it is consistently discussed as one of the major victims of overtourism. It's been a long time coming, too. Back in 2017, officials had to impose fines for bad behaviour at the iconic fountain, along with cracking down on those attempting to enter the water. One year later, an eight-person brawl broke out between visitors trying to take pictures. 'It's so overcrowded,' wrote one traveller on the r/Travel subreddit. 'Next time I'll just buy a postcard from three blocks away, since that's about as close as I got anyhow,' added another. As of last year, a 400-person limit has been imposed to prevent overcrowding at the site. London isn't immune to the pressures of tourism, and honestly, we're guilty of flocking to the next Instagrammable spot that pops up on our FYP – even if we've been in the city for a while. In November last year, Queen's Wood Cafe community cafe in Highgate, north London, fell victim to going viral. TikTokers declared it 'London's most magical cafe', claiming it's 'like stepping back in time'. However, the quiet spot is now very much on the radar, with locals complaining it's been 'ruined' and is no longer a hidden gem. There are now queues that snake back into the forest, a far cry from the empty autumn paradise the cafe once was. One TikToker wrote: 'Once a hidden gem, now just another Instagram-fuelled queue. The charming Highgate cafe is now just another social media hotspot – such a shame.' More Trending One user, lomakesmagic, wrote: 'Crying because this is down the street from me and was always dead. Please let north London have something.' 'I'm furious,' said another. 'This was my happy place, like my most sacred little corner of the earth for years.' Kate Middleton releases new video celebrating the beauty of British summer
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The Princess of Wales has shared a new message with a professional video of the UK's beautiful landscapes that helped inspire her through her cancer journey. For 2025, Kate Middleton spoke of how she has been comforted by nature over the past year, during which she received treatment for cancer. Spreading a message of love, she has now released a second video through the Kensington Palace social media accounts highlighting the natural beauty of British summertime. She wrote a post on X, signed off with her initial: 'Our lives flourish when we cherish the bonds of love and friendship. It has never been more important to appreciate the value of one another, and of Mother Nature. Here's to Summer. C' Her voiceover is played over video shot by Will Warr, from TopJaw fame, depicting an idyllic vision of British summertime without the raging wildfires. It does include awe-inspiring moments from the UK's landscape, a pollinating bee, huge trees, crashing waves, towering cliffs and children playing in sand dunes. Catherine says: 'Summer is a season for abundance. Just as the flowers bloom and the fruits ripen, we too are reminded of our own potential for growth. It is the time to ignite our inner fire and explore our own creativity, passions, and dreams. 'As we bask in the sunlit hours, friends and families come together; playing, connecting, being present. Embracing the joy to be found in even the most fleeting of moments and shared experiences. 'Our lives flourish when we cherish the bonds of love and friendship. 'So open your hearts; sing, dance, play. 'The days are still long, so simply love, and be loved.' The glossy production includes shots from Sheffield, Bradford, North Wales and Anglesey and the south coast of England. It comes after a furore over her message, which led to her picture being pulled from news agencies, in a row over manipulation which dragged on for weeks and led to a public apology. She told how discrepancies seen in the family photo were not part of some big conspiracy, but her 'amateur' attempts at picture editing. The princess came under scrutiny following her Mother's Day message last year, which included a photo of her and her children said to have been taken by William in Windsor earlier in the week. Questions were raised that the image – the first of the princess to have been released after she underwent abdominal surgery a few weeks earlier – may have been manipulated before it was posted on social media. It was withdrawn by international picture agencies later the same day. Kate publicly took the blame for the manipulated photograph and issued a personal apology for the 'confusion'. She said: 'Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. 'I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. 'I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother's Day. C.' The princess underwent a course of preventative chemotherapy after her cancer diagnosis and announced in September last year that she had completed her treatment. More Trending In January, Kate confirmed she is 'now in remission' from cancer following a surprise visit to the Royal Marsden Hospital where she received her treatment. A message on social media, also signed 'C', said: 'I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you to The Royal Marsden for looking after me so well during the past year. 'My heartfelt thanks goes to all those who have quietly walked alongside William and me as we have navigated everything. 'We couldn't have asked for more. The care and advice we have received throughout my time as a patient has been exceptional. Got a story? Elephant tramples tourist 'who took its photo with flash on'
A tourist had to run for his life before being trampled by an elephant after apparently venturing too close for a selfie. The man reportedly trespassed in a restricted forest near the Bankapur temple in Karnataka, southwest India. He allegedly tried to take a selfie with the creature but had to flee when it turned on him after being startled by the flash. Footage taken by visitors driving through the reserve on Sunday shows the elephant shrieking as it thunders across the road to chase the tourist, identified by authorities as R. Basavaraju. As the animal bore down on him he tripped and fell, with his trousers sliding down his waist, before the elephant walked over him. The creature then returned to the wilderness, leaving him splayed out on the road having fortuitously escaped being crushed under its weight. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Witness Daniel Osorio said the elephant was eating carrots at the side of the road when the tourist approached it to take a selfie. The animal attacked him after being provoked by the sudden bright flash, according to the passer-by. Forest officials said they tracked down Basavaraju at his home in Nanjangud town, also in the state of Karnataka. He was fined 25,000 Rupees (£212) and made to record a video confession, admitting his actions stemmed from ignorance of wildlife safety rules. More Trending Basavaraju also warned other tourists not to make the same mistake. The Forest Department said: 'Such reckless stunts not only endanger human lives but also provoke unpredictable and dangerous animal behaviour.'
