Omar El Hilali: Deport Migrants Who Commit Crimes

Morocco World7 days ago
Moroccan international and Espanyol player Omar El Hilali has called for migrants who commit crimes in Spain to be deported.
In an interview with Spanish platform BTV, El Hilali criticised what he described as a small group of migrants 'who come here with no intention of working' and 'spread hate and commit crimes'.
'If someone comes to Spain and doesn't want to work, they should go back to their country,' he said. 'They don't represent us.'
His comments follow recent unrest in Torre Pacheco, southern Spain, involving tensions between locals and migrant communities.
El Hilali, born in Spain to Moroccan parents, said this minority damages the reputation of others.
'People look at me as if I've committed 40 crimes just because of how I look,' he added. 'That's the result of what some are doing.'
He also recalled a past incident in which his mother was falsely accused of theft, saying the situation would not have occurred had migrants not been associated with crime.
Racism in Spanish Football
El Hilali's remarks come amid growing scrutiny of racism in Spanish football.
Athletic Club striker Maroan Sannadi was racially abused during a match against Espanyol. Fans chanted 'puto moro' ('f***ing Moroccan') before the referee stopped play and anti-racism messages were broadcast.
In a separate incident, Espanyol B forward Omar Sadik was also called 'puto moro' during a match against Europa. The referee activated La Liga's racism protocol, and Espanyol issued a public statement supporting the player.
Several other Moroccan or African-origin players, including Adama Boiro and Álvaro Djaló, have reported similar abuse during La Liga games. The Spanish football federation is under pressure to respond more forcefully.
On Choosing Morocco
El Hilali also addressed his decision to play for Morocco rather than Spain.
'I was born in Spain, but my roots are Moroccan. My family wanted me to represent Morocco, and they're proud of it,' he said.
El Hilali has been a regular starter for Espanyol over the last two seasons and is seen as one of the most promising defenders in Spanish football. Tags: Barcelonaespagnolomar el hilaliracismSpain

Somali authorities reassure families as 6 Moroccans await repatriation after acquittal

Following recent statements from the families of Moroccan nationals who were sentenced to death and later acquitted for joining ISIS, Somali authorities have moved to reassure them about the possibility of their return to Morocco. «Officials visited us at the Garoowe detention center. They assured us that we've been cleared by the justice system. Essentially, we could be repatriated at any moment, once the Moroccan side provides documents verifying our identities», said one of the individuals involved in a voice message sent Tuesday through his family. The six Moroccan nationals had their passports confiscated while in ISIS-controlled territory. After receiving death sentences from a Puntland military court at first instance, they were later acquitted on appeal. They have since been transferred to the administration under the Somali Ministry of Justice to facilitate their repatriation. A previous repatriation attempt reportedly failed due to insufficient identity documentation. According to one detainee, Somali officials said the group could be repatriated «unconditionally, even within 24 hours, or transferred to an international organization», as long as identity documents are supplied. In Morocco, the families of the detainees have submitted letters to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Living Abroad, the Ministry of Justice, the Public Prosecutor's Office, and the National Human Rights Council (CNDH). In Spain, relatives of Ahmed N., one of the six men, told Yabiladi they had contacted the Moroccan consulate in Seville, which has since forwarded the request to Rabat and is awaiting further updates.

Competing in the senior, junior, and cadet categories, Moroccan athletes secured second place overall, behind Egypt in first place and ahead of Senegal in third. Gold medals were claimed by Jannat El Kbari (Cadet -47kg), Jihane Bahajjou (Junior Kumite +66kg), Salah Koubidy (Junior Kumite +76kg), the girls' kata team, and the boys' kata team. "These results confirm that Morocco is among the top karate teams on the African stage,' said Mesnaoui, noting that the Federation will continue its efforts to build on this success in upcoming competitions. For his part, Morocco's Ambassador to Nigeria, Moha Ouali Tagma, praised the outstanding participation of Moroccan athletes who "raised the national flag high during this sporting event," while commending the quality of the team's technical coaching, which enabled an impressive showing at this highly competitive continental championship. Ben Saddik vs Rigters: When and How to Watch Glory 103

Moroccan kickboxer Jamal Ben Saddik is set to make his return in the Last Heavyweight Standing tournament, facing Dutch fighter Levi Rigters in the Round of 16 at the main event of GLORY 103. The bout will take place on August 23 at Rotterdam Ahoy in the Netherlands. The two fighters were originally scheduled to meet in 2022, but the fight was cancelled after a clash between supporters. The fight will be available to watch on StarTimes Sports – which airs GLORY events across Africa – on DAZN, and on GLORY's official streaming channels. The winner will advance to the year-end grand finale of GLORY's Last Heavyweight Standing tournament. Ben Saddik, nicknamed 'The Goliath,' holds a professional record of 38 wins, 10 losses, and 29 KOs. He famously defeated heavyweight king Rico Verhoeven with a second-round TKO in his debut back in 2011. Jamal has overcome his own battles outside the ring. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2012 and underwent a serious five-hour operation in Belgium in March 2024. Now 34, Jamal stands 2.05m tall, weighs 117.5kg, and is the biggest active fighter on the GLORY roster—rivalled only by former heavyweight champion Semmy Schilt in size. Ben Saddik is known for his aggressive, pressure-heavy style, overwhelming opponents with power punches and leaving little room for a counterattack. In the opposite corner, Levi 'The Judge' Rigters is a sharp and efficient Dutch kickboxer with a record of 19 wins, 3 losses, and 9 KOs. He is currently ranked #1 in the GLORY heavyweight division. Standing 2m tall, weighing 112.9kg, and aged 30, Rigters is the former Enfusion super heavyweight champion, a title he clinched after beating Martin Pacas in October 2018, before moving to GLORY in 2020. Jamal's raw power and relentless striking against Levi's precision and composure promise a true clash of styles. Tactically, the edge may lean toward Rigters—but Jamal's brute-force style is tailor-made for the heavyweight chaos. MWN predicts a third-round knockout for Jamal Ben Saddik.
