A Disney Cruise line spokesperson emphasized that the company is 'committed to the safety and well-being of our guests' and claimed that the incident 'highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols.'
In a Monday Facebook post, Kevin Furuta, a witness of the cruise ship rescue, wrote, 'On the last day of our Dream voyage and it is an at Sea Day. A girl fell overboard from the 4th deck & her dad went in after her. Right after the incident we heard on the loud speaker MOB Port side!! Thankfully the DCL rescue team was on it immediately and both were saved!'
According to CBS News, Laura Amador, a passenger on the Disney cruise ship, described the incident, saying, 'The ship was moving quickly, so quickly, it's crazy how quickly the people became tiny dots in the sea, and then you lost sight of them. The captain slowed the ship and turned it around, and then they deployed a tender ship with people on it to go get them, and we saw them rescue the dad and daughter.'

Girl fell from Disney cruise after losing balance on railing, slipped through porthole, authorities say

A 5-year-old girl vacationing with her family on a Disney cruise fell overboard Sunday morning after losing her balance while sitting on a railing and fell through a porthole, prompting a dramatic ocean rescue by her father, according to new details revealed Wednesday by South Florida authorities. The incident happened around 11:30 a.m. June 29 on Deck 4 of the Disney Dream ship, while it was in international waters between the Bahamas and Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office. Investigators say the child was sitting on a railing near a porthole when she fell backward into the ocean. Father jumped into ocean to save daughter, clung to her until help arrived The girl's mother immediately alerted her husband, who hadn't seen the fall, BSO said. On Tuesday, BSO clarified that the father was not holding his daughter over the railing at the time of the incident, countering online speculation that he may have been holding her moments before she fell. The 37-year-old father jumped into the water to save his daughter. The father clinged to his daughter and treaded water about 20 minutes until a rescue tender launched from the ship reached them, a moment that was captured on cellphone video. BSO credited the cruise ship crew's man-overboard training and quick action with saving both the girl and her father. Once rescued, the pair were evaluated by the ship's medical staff, then taken to an area hospital by Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue after the vessel docked at Port Everglades on Monday morning. Security video corroborated family's account of how girl fell, BSO says The father was hospitalized. The extent of his injuries has not been disclosed. The family, who lives out of state, asked for privacy, and their identities are not being released, authorities said. BSO detectives said security footage from the ship corroborated the family's account, and the investigation is ongoing. "This family is so blessed," a sheriff's spokesperson said. "It's great to be able to respond to good news rather than what could have been a tragic outcome."

Disney cruise passenger details rescue of two fellow guests: 'Brought me to tears'

Jenn Young was in her Disney Cruise Line cabin with her mother when they heard an announcement about an 'M.O.B.' on Sunday. 'My mom and I looked at (each other) and were like, 'That's got to be bad' because they made an announcement in our stateroom,' Young, 42, told USA TODAY. 'And we Googled what M.O.B. meant.' When they learned it stood for 'man overboard,' the pair, who were on vacation with Young's two daughters, husband and other family members, ran out on their balcony on the Disney Dream. Young saw crew members 'scurrying' up and down the side of the ship and three orange rings being tossed into the water, and the vessel started turning. The ship sent out a rescue boat, she said, and as it returned, the Hinckley, Ohio resident, saw a child and a man onboard, pumping his arm up and down mouthing, 'We're all OK.' The father and daughter were rescued after she fell in and he jumped in after her. 'I mean, it just brought me to tears to see both of them on there, sitting up, moving, conscious, and trying to tell everybody that they're okay,' said Young. "The Crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water," a Disney Cruise Line spokesperson previously told USA TODAY in a statement. "We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes. We are committed to the safety and well-being of our guests, and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols." Disney did not have additional details to share. Cruises see a fair amount of overboards: Are ships equipped? Disney cruise ships are all equipped with overboard detection systems, which can help cut down response times by notifying crew members. At least one such system developed for vessels or other maritime structures uses thermal cameras and micro radars to detect those kinds of incidents. The Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010 requires passenger vessels sailing in the U.S. to "integrate technology that can be used for capturing images of passengers or detecting passengers who have fallen overboard, to the extent that such technology is available." Brian Salerno, then senior vice president of global maritime policy for Cruise Lines International Association, told USA TODAY in 2023 that there weren't reliable products of that type available when the CVSSA was passed. In the years since, a number of companies have worked to create more dependable technology. Salerno said at the time that a number of cruise ships had installed the systems, but many operators have not disclosed that information publicly. Young, who has taken cruises before, said the incident isn't likely to deter her in the future. 'I feel like Disney did a great job,' she said. 'I feel like they have great safety precautions in place.' This story was updated to add new information. Nathan Diller is a consumer travel reporter for USA TODAY based in Nashville.
