Assembly bypolls: Ludhiana (West) in Punjab sees 33 pc turnout

Hans India9 hours ago

Chandigarh: Nearly thirty-three per cent of voters exercised their franchise on Thursday till 1 p.m. to elect the legislator for the Ludhiana (West) constituency that fell vacant after the death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi in January.
The voting started at 7 a.m. In the first two hours, the polling percentage was 8.50 per cent, which rose to 21.51 per cent by 11 am. The polling at 194 polling booths will continue till 6 p.m.
The counting of votes will be held on June 23 simultaneously with four other Assembly seats -- two in Gujarat and one each in Kerala and West Bengal.
The state ruling Aam Aadmi Party is eyeing to retain the seat, and the main Opposition Congress is aiming to win back the seat that it had represented six times. In total, 14 candidates are in the fray for the urban seat.
The BJP and the Shiromani Akali Dal have also fielded candidates for the seat. The main contest largely seems between AAP's candidate Sanjeev Arora, the party's Rajya Sabha member and local industrialist, Congress' former minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu, who represented the seat twice from 2012.
Ashu was defeated by his friend-turned-foe Gogi, 58, by a margin of 7,512 votes in the 2022 Assembly poll.
The BJP has fielded Jiwan Gupta, the party's state unit core committee member, while its former ally, Akali Dal, reposed faith in Parupkar Singh Ghuman, a former president of the Ludhiana Bar Association.
Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sibin C. said 1,74,437 electorates, comprising 84,825 women and 10 third-gender voters, will cast votes at 194 polling booths set up at 66 locations. These include 10 model polling booths, one all-women, one eco-friendly and one booth operated by Public Works Department (PWD) staff. Additionally, 13 booths have been declared critical, where paramilitary forces have been deployed.
To facilitate senior citizens, persons with disabilities and voters with medical issues, home voting was conducted with 239 participants. He said security checkpoints have been established at 54 locations across the constituency, and all activities are being closely monitored by the security forces.
By fielding the Rajya Sabha MP, speculations in political circles are rife that AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal, who's active in the state politics after facing humiliating defeat not only of his party but his bastion in Delhi Assembly elections, is going to the Rajya Sabha in his place in case Sanjeev Arora wins the bypoll. However, the party denies that Kejriwal is moving to the Rajya Sabha.
Interestingly, in October 2024, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried out a raid at the residence of AAP candidate Arora as part of a money laundering probe linked to a land 'fraud' case.
The BJP, which is expanding its footprints in the state's Hindu-dominated urban constituencies, is eyeing to give a tough contest to both the state ruling AAP and the Congress by fielding a strong and credible local face with grassroots connect.
In the run-up to the polling, the Bharatiya Janata Party carried out a scathing attack on the three-year rule of AAP's governance in Punjab, accusing them of transforming the state into a 'rehabilitation centre' for Kejriwal's rejected Delhi loyalists.
BJP leaders like Tarun Chugh, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Manjinder Singh Sirsa claimed that AAP is systematically placing its favoured individuals in key administrative positions, effectively undermining Punjab's autonomy.
They argued that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has been reduced to a 'rubber stamp' while Kejriwal operates as a remote puppet master.
AAP state President Aman Arora has claimed that the atmosphere during the campaign indicated that the AAP candidate Arora is heading towards a massive victory.

BJP Does Not Want Marathi Parties To Unite: Uddhav Thackeray On Cousin Raj

Mumbai: The Foundation Day of Shiv Sena saw yet another bout of verbal duel between the chiefs of two rival factions of the party that since the split, has fought over ideology and the legacy of Balasaheb Thackeray. But with Maharashtra's clear verdict in last year's assembly polls, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde fought from a position of strength. As his faction -- in firm possession of the party name, election symbol as well as assembly seats -- directed a sharp blow, Mr Shinde, too, pulled no punches. From Uddhav Thackeray, along with the expected jabs at the BJP and Eknath Shinde, there was yet another overture towards his cousin Raj Thackeray, the chief of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena: "If we stand today to ensure that the importance of Mumbai is not lost, only then we can stop it (the onslaught)...will that (alliance with MNS) happen? They (the ruling Mahayuthi) are trying to divide Marathi people... These servants of their masters do not want to see Marathi people together," he said, indirectly refering to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' recent meeting with Raj Thackeray. The MNS -- while not having much heft in the rest of Maharashtra -- matters as a catalyst in the civic elections, commanding a substantial number of Marathi votes in many municipal segments, including pockets of Worli, Dadar, Mahim, Prabhadevi, Goregaon and others. This is the reason why Raj Thackeray is being courted by both sides, and over the last weeks, Mr Thackeray has sent multiple signals to his estranged cousin - who has been wary so far. With Sena already split and BJP solely focusing on the north Indian voters, the Marathi voters will be spoilt with choice and the Shiv Sena UBT believes that the uniting of Thackerays offers better prospects for both parties, It was Mr Shinde's faction, though, which set the tone for the day with a cartoon posted on its social media handles that questioned how a party formed on October 10, 2022, could celebrate its 59th foundation day. Speaking from Worli Dome, Eknath Shinde had responded with a jibe to Uddhav Thackeray's quote of a dialogue from a Bollywood blockbuster - "If enemies come at me, I'll say 'Come on kill me'." "How can one kill a man already dead? The people pretty much killed you in the assembly polls," Eknath Shinde said, to applause from his audience. "In 2024 assembly elections, the people have shown them (Shiv Sena UBT) their real face.. they betrayed Balasaheb Thackeray and his ideology of Hindutva," he added. The Deputy Chief Minister then peppered his attack with more recent events - the terror attack in Pahalgam and the subsequent Operation Sindoor. "Where were you after Pahalgam attack? Have you met any families who lost their loved ones in the attack? where was your Marathi love then... We are proud of Operation Sindoor. They raise doubts about our Army.. they don't trust them. They believe on the Army chief of Pakistan. Instead of saluting bravery of soldiers they are asking of damages of our weapons... raising questions is equivalent to treason. They are acting like Pakistani agents," he said, encompassing the whole opposition. Uddhav Thackeray's comments on the matter were no less sharp. "You tied the hands of our army. We were ready to take over Pakistan - but then Trump called, and you went silent... "How did the four terrorists enter? Where were the Home Minister and the Defence Minister?" he had thundered from Mumbai's Shanmukhanand hall. "What is your definition of Hindutva? You criticise us for leaving Hindutva, but what about your leader who calls Colonel Sofiya Qureshi a sister of Pakistan," he added.

Stage set for Modi's city roadshow to celebrate BJP govt's year in power

Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi reviewed arrangements for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to the city on Friday to mark one year of the BJP govt in the state and 11 years of NDA rule at the Centre. Majhi visited Janata Maidan on Thursday for an on-site inspection, assessed the arrangements, and directed officials to ensure all works are completed on time. The chief minister emphasised the need for flawless execution of work for the high-profile event, a govt official said. At the heart of Modi's visit — the main and concluding event of celebrations marking the BJP govt's one year in Odisha — will be the inauguration of Vision Odisha 2036 and 2047, a comprehensive roadmap that aligns with Modi's vision of 'Purvodaya' — the rise of east India as a catalyst for national growth, state BJP President Manmohan Samal said. "The event is going to be historic with the PM announcing a developmental roadmap for Odisha by its centenary year in 2036," Samal said. The PM will also inaugurate several projects worth Rs 17,000 crore via video link, including rail services and EV buses, and honour beneficiaries of welfare schemes and social sector leaders before addressing the public at 4:30 pm. After flying to Odisha from Siwan in Bihar — where the PM is scheduled to address a rally — Modi and Odisha chief minister will traverse key locations in the city on a grand roadshow through AG Square, Raj Bhavan Square, Kalinga Stadium Square and Jayadev Bhavan Square. There will be cultural programmes and folk dance performances at around 10 locations on his route, besides a tricolour rally that will follow the PM. The state BJP chief said the visit underscores Modi's commitment to Odisha's development, aiming to strengthen infrastructure and attract industrial investments. Preparations are in full swing, with giant hoardings and cutouts of the PM adorning the city from the airport to Janata Maidan. The BJP expects more than one lakh people to turn up at the meeting venue. BJP leaders said the PM's upcoming visit — sixth after the BJP stormed to power in Odisha — is not just a ceremonial occasion but a strategic move to bolster the image of the Majhi govt and reinforce the party's commitment to the state's development. A three-layer security with at least 133 platoons of police will be deployed for the PM's visit, while police have chalked out a detailed plan to divert traffic from the main arterial road on Airport-Raj Bhawan-Jayadev Bhawan-Janata Maidan route.

Writers and artists in Tripura write to Muhammad Yunus condemning vandalism at Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home in Bangladesh

Amid protests against an attack on Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home in Bangladesh, poets, writers, and intellectuals wrote to Bangladesh Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus on Thursday demanding 'exemplary punishment' for the culprits behind the 'shameful and condemnable' incident. A letter signed by eminent litterateurs Professor Mihir Deb and Ratul Debbarman; renowned theatre artist Bibhu Bhattacharya; painter, mime artist, and Sangeet Natak Academy awardee Swapan Nandy; and Professor Mujahid Rahman, was sent via the West Tripura district magistrate's office, from where it is expected to be forwarded to the Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh at Agartala. The Assistant High Commission is in turn expected to forward the letter to Dhaka. In the letter, the signatories said their protest was voiced from Tripura, which has a long relationship with Tagore and was visited by him several times, and that the people of the state were 'deeply hurt' by the attack on the Nobel literature laureate's ancestral 'kacharibari' (revenue office) at Shahzadpur in Bangladesh's Sirajganj district last week. 'Rabindranath Tagore is the consciousness that encircles all our inspirations, awareness. He is a beacon holder of global thought, rising above the narrow barriers of language, identity, religion, colour. We celebrate him every day through the national anthem. We believe with all our heart that everything which share his memory are of pride for us. Insult or disrespect to Rabindranath Tagore – whether it is in our country or elsewhere, is shameful and condemnable, unpardonable,' reads the letter. The vandals have not only damaged precious historical assets but also insulted the cultural values of millions of people and deserve 'proper justice' and 'exemplary punishment', the writers and artists further wrote in the letter. On Monday, the ruling BJP protested in Agartala against the vandalism and attacks on minority communities in Bangladesh. BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee and leaders Subal Bhowmik, Bhagaban Das, Mimi Majumdar, and others carried placards and banners condemning the developments in the neighbouring country. Earlier, on June 14, similar protests took place in other parts of the state, including at Kailashahar in Unakoti, the Raghna international border in North Tripura, Sonamura in Sepahijala, Belonia in South Tripura, and Agartala. TIPRA Motha also organised several protests against the vandalism in Bangladesh.
