BACK OF THE NET First Brits get access to £10 a month 'superfast internet' trial with Wi-Fi EIGHT times faster than average UK broadband
GIFFGAFF has finally launched its trial for a new speedy 500Mbps broadband service in the UK.
But in a rare turn of events, initial service speeds appear to be delivering better than the headline rate of 500Mbps, according to ISPreview.

Using nexfibre and Virgin Media's 10Gbps capable full fibre networks, GiffGaff is only the second provider after Virgin to harness nexfibre's new wholesale network.
The network is currently available to over 2 million UK premises.
However, the trial, which was first confirmed back in mid-April 2025, is only opening up to 500 Brits to begin with.
Fortunately, that doesn't include the small pool of trialists that tested the service before.

The trial will run for 12 months and offer triallists a heavily discounted broadband price of just £10 per month.
That's not bad for 500Mbps - which is roughly eight times faster than the average UK broadband speed.
According to the first customers, the package gives households a proper IP address, delivers symmetric speeds and some of the exterior kit appears to retain Virgin Media's branding.
But there is no IPv6 yet, which offers more built-in security features than the older IPv4 used by the majority of broadband providers, including Virgin Media.

There is no GiffGaff branded kit to accompany the service yet either.
Customers appear to be receiving an Arcadyan Technology-build Wi-Fi hubs, or Amazon's Eero 6+ routers.
Soaring temperatures could affect your Wi-Fi, experts warn – how to stop your router overheating & avoid speed slow down
It is unclear whether GiffGaff will allow customers to use a third-party router.
According to ISPreview, it looks possible to use the hardware you have already installed, just with GiffGaff's new trial service.

Faster packages and different pricing are expected to follow the trial.
Although we don't yet know what those packages will look like, or when they will be available to customers.

Easy ways to check if you were mis-sold car finance and make a claim for compensation

Millions of Brits may have been mis-sold car finance if they purchased a vehicle prior to January 2021. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is currently investigating a scandal in which lenders permitted brokers to alter the interest rates they offered customers for car finance. The higher the interest rate, the more commission the broker earned. These discretionary commission arrangements (DCAs) sometimes resulted in customers paying more than necessary, as brokers were incentivised to hike up the charges. In 2021, the FCA outlawed this practice and is currently scrutinising these agreements. It stated on its website that since the ban, there has "been a high number of complaints from customers about how much they were charged before the ban". The authority further noted: "Providers were rejecting most of these complaints, because they believe they haven't acted unfairly and haven't caused customers to lose out. Once we get the Supreme Court's decision, if we find that motor finance customers have lost out, it's likely we'll consult on introducing a redress scheme." If you bought a motor vehicle on finance before 28 January 2021, you might be eligible to claim. This doesn't only apply to cars, but also includes vehicles like vans, camper vans and motorbikes. If you suspect you might be entitled to lodge a complaint, you can check for free - the FCA has a guide on how to do this here. For instance, if you feel your car finance agreement was unfair or you weren't informed about the dealer's commission for arranging the deal. The FCA is scrutinising these agreements and should it uncover "widespread misconduct" leading to consumer detriment, it will consider ways to ensure compensation. Meanwhile, individuals can still file complaints during the authority's investigation. While checking eligibility is free, opting for a Claims Management Company (CMC) is discouraged by the FCA due to potential fees. These firms may assist with claims or refer you to solicitors, but they do charge for their services. Should you decide to use a CMC, verify its FCA approval via their firm checker, or ensure it's regulated by a legal body. More information is available on the FCA website. One red flag is if a company does not make you aware that you could file the complaint yourself at no cost. Some examples of CMCs which are authorised by the FCA include: The FCA recommends: "Claims management companies (CMCs) are aware of the time limits that apply depending on the stage of your complaint. Your CMC should keep you up to date on the progress of your complaint. Contact your CMC if you want more information." A significant development in the controversy occurred last October, when the Court of Appeal found non-disclosure of commissions on car loans to be illegal. Following this decision, the Financial Ombudsman Service reported a spike in complaints, with a record-breaking 18,658 new cases concerning car finance in the final quarter of 2024. Yet in January 2025, the UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves stepped in intending to shield lenders from the risk of multibillion-pound reimbursements, highlighting her concerns about the economic fallout and how it might affect consumer access to car loans. Currently, the Supreme Court is deliberating over a crucial appeal from car loan companies challenging earlier decisions that went in favour of consumers. In light of this, the FCA has put a temporary hold on processing complaints until a verdict is delivered later in the year, a decision which will be essential in establishing the financial responsibility of lending institutions.

Plans to expand one of Europe's busiest train stations have been revealed and include a new track and second tunnel, as the prospect of a direct link to London grows more likely. These upgrades will increase the station's current capacity by a staggering 50 per cent. Plans were publicly displayed on May 14 and have since been approved as Zürich Stadelhofen station braces for an upgrade. Commissioned by the Swiss Federal Government, the Swiss Federal Railways (SSB) aims to address a major bottleneck in the Zürich S-Bahn system, Railway Pro reports. SSB intends to achieve this through the station's expansion, as the current three-track layout already operates at full capacity. Plans for direct route to London This comes after SSB revealed hopes to create a direct line to London earlier this year. According to Swiss info, the prospect of a direct high-speed rail link is growing more likely, but Switzerland needs to make adaptations to its stations before this can happen. This new expansion could be a step in the right direction as the proposed upgrade of one of the world's busiest stations will enable more frequent services and improve connectivity. One Brit told Swiss Info: "We feel so disconnected after Brexit. This kind of direct connection would be incredible." Currently, Brits can travel to five places by direct train with Eurostar -Paris, Lille, Brussels, Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Picturesque English town is getting new £27m train line for first time in 60 years – & will cut journey times by an hour But new plans have suggested routes from the UK to seven other cities in Germany, Switzerland, France and Italy. Yann Leriche, the chief executive of Getlink, said: "We are keen to drive forward attractive opportunities for low-carbon [travel] with a range of new destinations in Germany, Switzerland and France. A spokesperson for London St Pancras Highspeed added: "Many European cities could be reached directly by train in under six hours which we believe is really competitive with short-haul air travel." However, the plans are rather ambitious, with no set time frame for when these could launch. Key upgrades to major Zürich station With approximately 80,000 daily passengers and 770 train movements, Zürich Stadelhofen is the third-busiest station in the city and the tenth-busiest in Switzerland. The proposed upgrade will enable more frequent services and support the implementation of a 15-minute base frequency across the network. According to Railway Pro, these are the key upgrades to the station : The construction of a fourth track on the hillside of the station, aligned with the current shopping level Connection of the new track to existing tunnels A new single-track Riesbach Tunnel towards Zürich Tiefenbrunnen Enhanced station access Sun Travel's favourite train journeys in the world Sun Travel's journalists have taken their fare share of train journeys on their travels and here they share their most memorable rail experiences. A number of popular porn sites including PornHub have already confirmed they will introduce new verification checks to comply with the overhaul. And now Reddit has revealed it too is making changes, coming into effect immediately. "We have tried to do this in a way that protects the privacy of UK redditors," the tech firm said. Going forward, users will need to submit a selfie or a photo of your government ID to gain access to adult subreddit pages. Reddit is using a third-party provider called Persona to do the checks and says the company "promises not to retain the photo for longer than 7 days and will not have access to your Reddit data such as the subreddits you visit". Regulator Ofcom will be responsible for checking websites comply with the new rules. "Society has long protected youngsters from products that aren't suitable for them, from alcohol to smoking or gambling," said Oliver Griffiths, Ofcom Group Director of Online Safety. "But for too long children have been only a click away from harmful pornography online. 'Now, change is happening. These age checks will bring pornography into line with how we treat adult services in the real world, without compromising access and privacy for over-18s."
