Canadian teen shatters 400 metres freestyle record
Canadian three-times Olympic champion Summer McIntosh set a world record in the women's 400 metres freestyle at the Canadian Swimming Trials in Victoria, British Columbia, on Saturday. The 18-year-old clocked 3:54.18 to better Australian Ariarne Titmus' mark of 3:55.38 set at the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. "Going into tonight, I knew that my training has been really good these past few months, and I knew that I could do something special," McIntosh told public broadcaster CBC. "So being able to input my training in doing that - I didn't think my training would be 54.1 but I'm really happy with that." At the Paris Olympics, McIntosh became the first athlete from Canada to win three gold medals at a single Olympic Games. In Paris, the four-times World Aquatics champion won gold in the 400 metres individual medley, 200 butterfly and 200 individual medley, as well as taking silver in the 400 freestyle. But things felt different at the Canada trials. "I just felt so strong throughout, and that's never been the case in the 400 freestyle for me. That last 100, I'm always really, really hurting. "But I flipped at the 200 and I was just cruising, so I knew that I was having a strong swim. I could tell by the crowd and knew the way they were cheering that I was probably close to the world record. "So I really tried to push that last part for them."

Coco Gauff wins 2025 French Open title
A battle between the top two players The final marked the first Grand Slam final between the WTA's top two players since 2018, when Caroline Wozniacki defeated Simona Halep at the Australian Open. The match showcased intense rallies and momentum shifts, keeping fans on the edge of their seats. Sabalenka struggles with unforced errors Despite her strong run through the tournament—beating Olympic champion Zheng Zhenwen and three-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek—Sabalenka struggled with 70 unforced errors, more than double Gauff's 30. This ultimately cost her the chance at a first Roland Garros title and her fourth overall Grand Slam. Gauff's continued rise This victory adds to Gauff's growing legacy, following her first Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open (Flushing Meadows). The win further cements her status as one of the rising stars and dominant forces in women's tennis. Missed rematch opportunity for Sabalenka Earlier in May, Sabalenka had defeated Gauff in the Madrid final, leading many to expect a repeat performance. However, Gauff's resilience and tactical adjustments turned the tide in Paris, earning her a memorable victory on clay.

Italian league set to begin on August 24, 2025
Minimal interruptions and year-end matches According to the league's statement, the season will only pause during the four designated FIFA international windows, scheduled for September, October, November, and March. As in previous seasons, Serie A will not observe a winter break, with fixtures already planned for December 21 and 28, 2025, as well as January 3 and 6, 2026. Midweek fixtures and scheduling adjustments The league also revealed that Matchdays 9 and 19 will be held midweek to accommodate the full 38-round schedule within the set timeframe. These midweek rounds are part of the league's strategy to ensure efficient scheduling despite a packed football calendar. City rivalries and stadium coordination In efforts to minimize security concerns, the league will alternate home and away matches for high-profile city rivalries such as Inter vs. Milan, Lazio vs. Roma, Juventus vs. Torino, and Fiorentina vs. Pisa. This measure is intended to prevent both clubs from hosting matches in the same city during the same round. San Siro exception due to Olympic preparations Despite these arrangements, exceptions will be made where necessary. One notable case involves Milan and Inter, whose shared home, San Siro Stadium, will be unavailable in early February due to preparations for the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. The stadium is set to host the Olympic opening ceremony on February 6, 2026, requiring special adjustments to the match calendar for both teams.
