Budget rates relief ‘necessary'

Oamaru. PHOTO: PETER MCINTOSH Rates relief for potentially hundreds of Waitaki senior citizens through Budget 2025, is "timely and necessary", Age Concern Otago says. The Budget last week announced a rise in the income abatement threshold for SuperGold Cardholders and their households to be eligible for the maximum rebate from $31,510 to $45,000, about the same rate as a couple receiving superannuation. "In the Waitaki District alone, over 5700 people receive NZ Super, many of whom will benefit directly from this support," Age Concern Otago chief executive Mike Williams said. "While we don't have exact figures on how many will qualify, we do know that around 40% of New Zealanders aged 65 and over have virtually no other income beyond NZ Super. With nearly a quarter of Waitaki's population aged 65 or older, and rates set to rise by an average of around 10% across the district, this support is both timely and necessary." The maximum rebate for the scheme will also increase from $790 to $805, while those SuperGold cardholders with income higher than $45,000 will be eligible for a smaller rebate. Ratepayers can apply for the new maximum rebate under the new abatement thresholds after July 1. Application forms will be available from councils and will also be able to be downloaded from the New Zealand Government website ( and then submitted to local councils. Waitaki district mayor Gary Kircher is positive in his support for the move. "It's a tough budget for many, though I see some benefits in the budget for our community," he told the Oamaru Mail. "It is good to see that more of our Super Gold Card holders will be eligible for rates relief, as the government recognises the pressures on local government and their ratepayers. "This is welcome news for many of our Waitaki ratepayers, especially those on fixed incomes who own their own homes." Any over-65s with questions about eligibility can contact Waitaki District Council on 03 433 0300 or by contacting service@ Mr Kircher said there were other good news items in the Budget. "An increase of $2.7b for roads schools and hospitals will help, though at least some of those increases had already been announced. "From a council perspective, it will be extremely helpful if the government increases the ability of NZTA to match more of our funding to help councils make progress on the overall underinvestment in roading. "There will be general benefits for our community with the sensible changes to prescriptions, and improvements to our after-hours healthcare, along with an extra $1b for new health infrastructure. "However, the zero increase to many budgets and the decrease in others will be difficult for most government agencies. "I doubt that it has been an easy task for the government, and there is some good logic behind a number of changes. "Unfortunately, many people are doing it bloody hard right now and there will some who are going to be slightly better off, but not all of those most affected." Waitaki MP Miles Anderson said the district would also benefit from Budget 2025's new Investment Boost initiative, which would provide "a major new tax incentive to encourage businesses to invest, grow the economy, and lift wages". "This is great news for farms and businesses in the Waitaki and the initiative is already seeing a strong positive response from the sector. "With our region's strong rural and supporting industries we need businesses to invest in productive assets — like machinery, tools, equipment, vehicles and technology. Investment drives productivity improvements, makes firms more competitive and supports employers to improve workers' wages. "Investment Boost allows a business to immediately deduct 20% of the cost of a new asset, on top of depreciation, meaning a much lower tax bill in the year of purchase." That meant better cashflows, which in turn, makes potential investments "stack up financially", he said. On top of a $164m investment in rural health, including expanded and improved after-hours health services in Oamaru, the Budget also strengthened education provision with $1.5billion to improve student achievement, including $646m of initiatives to ensure earlier identification of, and better help for, children with additional physical, learning and behavioural needs, he said. Another $700m would deliver new schools and classrooms. "We are making smart improvements in education that will make a real difference for young people here," Mr Anderson said.

Capgemini expands partnership for secure generative AI with SAP

Capgemini has announced the expansion of its strategic partnership with Mistral AI and SAP to provide secure generative AI-powered solutions for organisations in regulated industries. The collaboration is intended to support sectors such as financial services, public sector, aerospace and defence, and energy and utilities, all of which have especially stringent data requirements. By leveraging Mistral AI's generative AI models together with SAP's Business Technology Platform (BTP), Capgemini plans to develop accessible business AI use cases that also seek to minimise environmental impact through a lower carbon footprint. Custom business AI solutions will be made available within SAP through a library of more than 50 pre-built use cases. These use cases draw on models from Mistral AI and have been validated by SAP, covering a range of industry-specific and process-driven needs. The solutions have been designed in accordance with regulations, incorporating responsible and ethical AI principles, built-in governance, and a focus on data security. Examples of use cases provided by the collaboration include augmented field workers in aerospace and defence to help resolve non-conformities in operations, drone-based inspection for predictive maintenance in energy and utilities, and intelligent indirect purchasing processes applicable across a variety of industries to streamline supplier selection. Capgemini stated that the collaboration aims to help organisations accelerate the deployment of customised generative AI solutions within SAP, particularly for those organisations that require secure environments to meet regulatory or privacy obligations. Marjorie Janiewicz, Mistral AI Executive Board member and Global Head of Revenue, said, "This new collaboration between Capgemini, Mistral AI and SAP unlocks new high-value business use cases for organizations seeking to augment their operations with generative AI capabilities. By combining our frontier, multilingual and highly customizable AI models with Capgemini's expertise in delivering real world industry-specific generative AI solutions, and the assurance of SAP's robust technology platform, we are making the effective integration of AI more accessible for all organizations, including those in highly regulated industries." Fernando Alvarez, Chief Strategy and Development Officer and Group Executive Board member at Capgemini, added, "Enterprises are increasingly turning to generative AI to enhance their resilience, streamline operations and accelerate time to value. As a trusted business and technology transformation partner to our clients, Capgemini is committed to helping them evolve their critical business processes through the secure and tailored application of AI. Together with Mistral AI and SAP, we can empower organizations to access a broad range of innovative and customized AI models, to drive significant business value and foster sustainable growth." Thomas Saueressig, Member of the Executive Board of SAP SE, Customer Services and Delivery, commented, "The collaboration is a powerful example of how we are enabling enterprises to leverage the power of generative AI to address their most critical business challenges. With SAP Business Technology Platform as a secure and scalable foundation, we're enabling organizations, especially those in regulated industries, to adopt AI with confidence, trust, and speed in a way that delivers real business value." Capgemini has also worked closely with SAP to expand its dedicated Global SAP Center of Excellence, which helps organisations tackle critical business challenges with generative AI. The partners have previously collaborated with Brose, an automotive supplier, to deliver an AI-powered assistant for suppliers known as SupplierGPT. This platform, built on SAP BTP, has enhanced efficiency within Brose's supplier network by improving onboarding and standardising processes. Michael Seifert, Business Product Owner Brose Supplier Portal, Brose Fahrzeugteile SE & Co. KG, remarked, "Together with Capgemini, we were able to implement SupplierGPT, from idea to reality within a few weeks. This solution enables the seamless integration of new innovations and supports rapid go-to-market, thanks to the AI services in SAP BTP. This co-innovation model combines the expertise of Capgemini, Brose and SAP to allow joint pilots to be designed, implemented, and tested quickly." Capgemini's efforts in this space have been recognised with the 2025 SAP Pinnacle Award for Business AI Innovation in the Customer AI use case category. The award highlights the performance and achievements of SAP's partners around the world who demonstrate capability in delivering AI-powered solutions.

My biggest financial mistakes and what you can learn from them

My financial missteps haven't ruined me (yet, touch wood) but there have been many - and perhaps there are some pearls of wisdom you could learn from my past idiocy. Panic selling I won't pretend it was stellar financial foresight that led me to invest in Xero in its early days on the NZX. I just liked the cut of Rod Drury's jib, and it seemed like he was on to a good thing. I was planning to be a long-term investor but, as its share price rose and rose, I got excited - particularly as I was saving for a house deposit. (I should note here that I only had a small portion of my overall savings in shares!). Every broker I spoke to warned Xero was overvalued – the fundamentals did not support such a share price, they said - but investors apparently disagreed. But then shares took a wee tumble, then fell a little further - and I panicked. I decided it was better to quit while I was ahead and reasoned 'Hey, I'd doubled my money'. Xero shares then resumed their rise, climbing further … and further … and further. I later did the sums as to what that decision cost me, and the answer was hundreds of thousands of dollars. Gulp. Sob. Sigh. There are many lessons from that experience. First, my reaction to a drop in the share price, coupled with my short-term goal to buy a house, suggests I didn't have the right risk profile to be investing in shares just then (plus having such a concentration in a single share is the anthesis of diversification wisdom). It showed me it's easy to say you're comfortable with risk when the share price is rising, but the reality is revealed by what you feel – and what you do - when it's falling. I also learnt to keep things in perspective – I didn't lose hundreds of thousands of dollars, I lost the chance to turn my meagre investment into a much bigger sum. Plus, I did manage to use the funds to buy a house – and that also makes me fortunate. I should also mention that I later re-invested in Xero before it moved solely to the ASX – and it has performed very well since (just not as well as if I'd left my initial investment in!) Life admin fail Not all my mistakes were quite so costly, but one that still rankles involves my KiwiSaver. For a while I was on a contract that took a total remuneration approach to KiwiSaver - meaning both your 3% and your employers' 3% come from your salary, rather than their 3% being on top (so perhaps my first mistake was not negotiating a better contract!). As contributions were therefore 6% of my salary, a financial adviser suggested pausing them to help me secure lending for another investment, which I did. It then took me a long time to resume contributing. I just didn't get around to it. For ages. What. An. Idiot. Not only did I miss out on the investment returns that would have compounded for decades to come, but I did not put that 3% anywhere productive. I can't quantify specifically what that life admin fail cost me, but it was fruitless and avoidable. Learn from my mistakes - pausing your KiwiSaver contributions should be an absolute last resort, but if you need to do it, prioritise resuming them ASAP. Falling victim to lifestyle creep Nadine Higgins is the host of NZME's personal finance podcast, The Prosperity Project, and a financial adviser at enableMe. She was formerly a financial journalist and broadcaster. Photo / Supplied Early in my career, my salary rose much faster than my living costs but my spending adjusted terrifyingly quickly to soak up the difference. I budgeted like a ninja to survive as a student, then as an intern, but as I moved to being paid a salary, then a higher salary, then into a new job with better pay, my taste got more expensive. A friend and I look back and laugh (a little ruefully) about how our Saturdays used to involve getting our nails done and going shopping just for something to do. I enjoyed that financial freedom after a childhood where every dollar was stretched, and I did still manage to save but not nearly as much as I could have – the benefits of which would have paid serious dividends all these years later. I'm not an advocate of living life in a financial straitjacket if you can avoid it, but I do encourage prioritising what really brings joy. So, let's just say these days I'm more likely to go shopping in my own wardrobe, and paint my own nails. I've made many more than three financial mistakes, of course, and, while all are devoid of both glamour and gore, hopefully you can learn something from them without having to make them yourself.
