More embarrassment for All India Football Federation as international sports court declares Inter Kashi as I-League champions
The Switzerland-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected the AIFF Appeal Committee's decision to award the title to Churchill Brothers of Goa and declared that Kashi, instead, should be declared the second-division champions. The decision, which came on Friday, will end a months-long saga that overshadowed a nail-biting season.
The international sports court's verdict will come as further embarrassment for an under-fire AIFF as it had earlier announced Churchill Brothers as the I-League champions. Their decision came after its Appeal Committee ruled against Inter Kashi in a matter related to the fielding of an 'ineligible player'. The Varanasi club had ended in second spot after points were deducted from their tally.

However, Inter Kashi approached the CAS, which asked the AIFF to reverse its decision. 'The AIFF shall forthwith declare Inter Kashi FC as winner of the I-league 2024-25 season,' the Lausanne-based CAS said in its order, according to the Press Trust of India. 'The appeal filed on 4 June 2025 by Inter Kashi FC against the decision issued on 31 May 2025 by the Appeal Committee of the All-India Football Federation is partially upheld. The decision issued on 31 May 2025 by the Appeal Committee of the All India Football Federation is set aside.'
On January 13, Namdhari beat Inter Kashi 2-0 in the I-League. After the match was over, Inter Kashi disputed the result, alleging that Namdhari had fielded an ineligible player, Cledson Carvalho da Silva — also known as Dé. They contended that Dé should have been suspended under the AIFF's rules, claiming he had accumulated four yellow cards through the season. The fact that one of his yellow cards led to a sending-off presented a confusing scenario for the parties involved.
It took more than one month for the AIFF's Disciplinary Committee, headed by a former Uttarakhand High Court judge, to announce its verdict. On February 24, the committee upheld Inter Kashi's appeal and handed them a 3-0 win. At that point, it placed Inter Kashi above Churchill Brothers in the title race.
Namdhari immediately appealed the decision. The Punjab-based club claimed that the AIFF's portal 'did not show' that the player was suspended for the match and hence, they fielded him.
Another month later, on March 27, the AIFF Appeals Committee, headed by a former Allahabad High Court judge, put the earlier decision in abeyance. It meant that Churchill regained their position at the top of the table. The appeals committee said it would continue hearing the case on April 28, long after the league was done and dusted.
On April 6, the final day of the I-League, Churchill did just enough against Real Kashmir to finish top of the table with 40 points whereas Inter Kashi defeated Rajasthan United to end the season that afternoon with 39 points.
They hoped that if the AIFF's appeals committee gave the verdict in their favour, like the disciplinary panel, they would get the three points and leapfrog Churchill to become champions.
Amidst confusion and outcry over the lack of clarity regarding the champions, the appeals committee brought forward the hearing to April 12. And after speaking to all parties, it sided with Namdhari, thus paving the way for Churchill to be crowned the champions on April 20 — two weeks after the league was over.
Inter Kashi approached CAS even as the AIFF handed over the trophy to Churchill. Now, with the CAS ruling in their favour, the AIFF will have to take the trophy back from Churchill and hand it over to Inter Kashi.

From flight to freefall: How TN based Archana Thiagarajan led India to glory
Until the 1960s, scientists believed that diving beyond 38 metres (around 125 feet), could kill a human. The pressure, they thought, would crush the lungs. But in 1952, an Italian diver Raimondo Bucher took a 39-metre-plunge and came back up, proving them wrong. Since then, freedivers have been going deeper. Some use ropes, some fins, some add weights, and one discipline has crossed the 200-metre mark. But the risk is real. Seawater is 840 times denser than air, and as you sink, the pressure builds quickly. The deeper you go, the heavier it gets. And yet, freedivers return for tranquility and slow fall. 'What draws me to freediving, is the calmness and stillness. It's just you and your body,' says Tamil Nadu-based Archana Thiagarajan. 'I usually close my eyes. It's like being in space, weightless, free-falling, neutrally buoyant.' A former squadron leader in the Indian Air Force, Archana, never expected to find a space in this world. But earlier this year, she made history. At the 34th AIDA Freediving World Championship in Wakayama, Japan (held from 28 June to 2 July, 2025), Archana became the first Indian woman to represent the country. In her debut appearance, she set four new national records across all pool disciplines (DYNB: 137m; DYN: 125m; DNF: 94m; STA: 4:22 Sec), bringing her total to ten (all in pool disciplines). A sabbatical in Indonesia in April 2024 with her husband (also ex-IAF), had sparked a casual interest in freediving after initially considering scuba. They had both retired from the IAF on 5 January, 2024 and planned a year of travel. Now, that spark has taken her to the world stage.

Rajasthan Table Tennis Association president Mukul Gupta demands action against TTFI secretary Kamlesh Mehta and Ranjeet Malik
Jaipur: All is not well in the Rajasthan table tennis fraternity. The intense fight between the two factions has put a break on the progress of sport in the region for the last couple of years. The president of the Rajasthan Table Tennis Association (RTTA) Mukul Gupta has alleged that the other faction - led by Ranjeet Malik -- is trying to create problems and hampering the game despite a proper elected body being formed in the elections held on February 11, 2023. "During the last elections, observers from Table Tennis Federation of India (Gulanan), Rajasthan State Sports Council (Bhiya Ram Choudhary) and Rajasthan Olympic Association (Arun Saraswat and Shankar Lal) witnessed the proceedings in Jodhpur under the supervision of election officer Mahesh Saini. However, despite the fair elections, we still did not get the affiliation letter from the RSSC," said Mukul Gupta while addressing a press conference here on Sunday. Mukul Gupta alleged that after the 2023 elections, Ranjeet Malik approached TTFI secretary Kamlesh Metha and formed another group which forced the national governing body of TT to withdraw the powers of the elected body. Thereafter, two teams of Rajasthan (TTFI 1 and TTFI 2) are participating in the Nationals. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like for Working Pros BITS Pilani Digital Apply Now "Ranjeet Malik joined hands with his friend Kamlesh Mehta for his personal gains and made a mockery of the elections held according to the constitution of the RTTA. It is a big conspiracy and ruining the game in the region. Paddlers of Rajasthan are suffering as they are not getting valid certificates from the TTFI. It not only affects their chances of representing the country but also not helping them secure jobs in the government or private sectors," alleged Jodhpur-based Mukul Gupta, who was elected as the RTTA president for a four-year tenure in February 2023. The Mukul Gupta-led RTTA has three demands to restore the game in the region and seeks urgent attention of the state government. "There should be a proper action against Kamlesh Mehta and Ranjeet Malik. We should get an affiliation letter from the RSSC as soon as possible. Mention of Rajasthan on the certificates of players who compete in the national-level tournaments," demanded Gupta. One of the RTTA vice-presidents and Jaipur District TT Association president Lalit Singh added that they approached state sports minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and RSSC chairman Neeraj K Pawan several times but did not get justice so far. "Sports minister said formation of an ad hoc body is the answer to this problem and asked the chairman to resolve the issue. We are ready to hear our oppositions' views in the meeting for the benefit of state players," said Lalit Singh.
