Jewellery store manager booked for misappropriating 17L

Time of India28-05-2025
Rajkot: A store manager at Tanishq Jewellers in Rajkot has been booked for allegedly misappropriating cash and jewellery worth Rs 17 lakh belonging to a customer. Nilesh Dhadhda, has been charged under Section 316(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for criminal breach of trust by a clerk or servant.
The case came to light after Milan Pota, a regular customer, approached the store's liaison officer, Chetan Jadav, on May 4. According to Jadav's police complaint, Pota had made an online payment of Rs 3 lakh on Jan 10 and later deposited old jewellery — including a diamond ring worth Rs 14 lakh — with Dhadhda on March 19. In return, the customer had ordered newly designed jewellery, which Dhadhda was responsible for delivering.
The new jewellery was never delivered. Instead, Dhadhda allegedly retained the items, sold them and misappropriated the proceeds.
The complaint further states that despite repeated attempts to recover the money — including filing an initial police application and giving Dhadhda time to return the funds — no reimbursement was made.An FIR was thus lodged on Tuesday at Rajkot Taluka police station.
Dhadhda had been transferred from Tanishq's Gandhidham showroom before the alleged offence occurred in Rajkot. Police are investigating the case.

Kerala HC orders arrest of third sister ship of sunken vessel

The Kerala High Court on Tuesday ordered the conditional arrest of Liberian-flagged ship MV MSC Palermo for securing claims related to losses incurred after its sister vessel, MSC Elsa 3, sank off the Kochi coast on May 25, Live Law reported. MV MSC Palermo is currently anchored at the Vizhinjam port in Thiruvananthapuram. The petitioners had claimed that their fishing vessels were damaged by the floating debris of MSC Elsa 3. The court ordered the conditional arrest of MV MSC Palermo till security of Rs 2.6 crore is deposited, according to Live Law. MSC ELSA 3 was on its way from Vizhinjam to Kochi and carrying 640 containers, including 13 hazardous cargo and 12 calcium carbide containers, when it sank 'reportedly due to flooding in one of the holds', the Indian Coast Guard had said. On June 18, the court had issued a similar order detaining MV MSC Polo II in a suit filed by Sans Cashew India Private Limited, which claimed that its consignment worth Rs 74 lakh was lost due to the sinking. This came four days after the court on June 13 ordered the detention of another vessel, MSC Manasa F, that is also operated by the Mediterranean Shipping Company following petitions from five other cargo owners who also lost shipments in the incident. The order secured nearly Rs 6 crore as a conditional deposit for the release of the ship. On May 29, the Kerala government declared the wreckage of MSC ELSA 3 a state-specific disaster.

Ex-Navy officer threatened with ‘money laundering case', duped of Rs. 14.5 lakh by cyber fraudster in Mumbai

An 87-year-old former lieutenant commander with the Indian Navy was duped of Rs. 14.5 lakh after a cyber fraudster claiming to be a Mumbai police Crime Branch officer threatened to book him in a money laundering case. According to the police, the fraudsters told the senior citizen that he was working on a commission basis, and was supposed to get 10 per cent commission on a transaction of Rs 2 crore. They made him transfer Rs. 14 lakh of his entire savings to avoid arrest in the case. The police said the complainant, a resident of Jogeshwari (East), received a WhatsApp call on July 24, and the caller introduced himself as Sub-Inspector Malhotra from the Telecom Department in Delhi. The caller told the complainant that his SIM card would be deactivated because illegal activities were being carried out through the number, and the Mumbai Crime Branch has registered a case of money laundering against him based on the complaint registered by 24 people. The caller added that an investigating officer, Vikram Goswami, would interrogate him. The complainant received another call after some time. The victim was forced to make a video call from an isolated place, and the fraudsters threatened him that if he discussed the issue with anyone, he would be arrested. The caller even sent an arrest warrant on the complainant's phone, asking him to provide information about his whereabouts. The person called again, saying that the CBI director would question him. This time, the caller's profile photo had the logo of the Mumbai police, and started threatening the victim that a warrant had been issued against him and he would be arrested at any time. As the victim got scared, the caller forced him to transfer his entire savings to a bank account. He told the victim the money would be kept as a deposit, and after verification, if he were found innocent, his money would be transferred again to his bank account. The complainant agreed to send the money and transferred it to the given bank accounts by fraud. However, he realised that he had been duped when he started calling the same number on August 6 to request them to send his money back, as he was innocent, but found the number was out of service. He then discussed it with his family, and approached the cyber police and registered a case. The police said a case has been registered under several sections of the BNS, and they are checking the bank account to find out the accused.

Uttar Pradesh court orders FIR against Union MoS for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh, four others in land dispute case

A court in Uttar Pradesh's Gonda district has directed the police to register an FIR against Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh, his representative Rajesh Singh and three others in connection with an alleged land dispute case. According to officials, the order was issued on Monday (August 11, 2025) by Special Judge of the MP-MLA Court (Civil Judge, Senior Division) Apeksha Singh, who instructed Mankapur police station to lodge an FIR against Kirti Vardhan Singh, Rajesh Singh, Pinku Singh, Sahdev Yadav and Kanti Singh. The complainant, Ajay Singh, a resident of Bhitoura in the Mankapur area, had moved the court under Section 173(4) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, seeking registration of a case against the accused. Ajay Singh has alleged that land registered in the name of his wife Manisha Singh was fraudulently transferred again by influencing and luring the original seller, Bittan Devi, to execute a backdated sale deed in favour of Mithlesh Rastogi and Kanti Singh using a three-year-old stamp paper. He claimed that when he complained, the Superintendent of Police ordered an inquiry, which confirmed the allegations. Based on the SP's directions, police registered a case in 2024 against the seller and the buyers under relevant sections, but later filed a final report closing the matter. Ajay Singh said he objected to the closure, and in March 2025, the court set aside the final report and ordered further investigation, which is still underway. In the meantime, Rajesh Singh allegedly lodged a false case against Ajay Singh and his wife at the local police station in 2024. After the court's order for further investigation, Rajesh Singh allegedly used his political influence to harass the couple, they said. Through his driver Rinku Singh, he purportedly got another case registered against the couple under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and other sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, with the aim of pressuring them to settle the dispute. Ajay Singh alleged that since then, the accused have been threatening him to stop pursuing cases related to the disputed land and agree to a settlement, warning that his family would be killed if he refused. He said that despite repeated complaints to the police, no action was taken, prompting him to approach the court. Reacting to the development, Rajesh Singh, the Union Minister's representative, said he had come to know about the matter through the media and would comment only after receiving a copy of the court order.
