Sarah Morlok Cotton obituary: Last of ‘miracle' Morlok quadruplets
The press and newsreel companies, both domestic and international, had a field day. The quadruplets' local newspaper in Lansing, Michigan, held a naming competition that attracted 12,000 entries and was won by the ten-year-old daughter of the doctor who delivered the babies. She suggested Edna, Wilma, Sarah and Helen to match the initials of the EW Sparrow Hospital where they were born, and the girls were given the middle initials A, B,C and D.
The city council gave the family free housing, medical support and milk. Wellwishers donated money and knitted clothes. A Massachusetts pram company made a special four-seater. People turned up at the family's modest home in the hope of glimpsing the girls, and soon Sadie, a nurse, and her husband, Carl, a factory worker, were charging them 25c for admission. Carl — dubbed 'Jolly Carl' by the newspapers — ran for the post of city constable using pictures of his daughters in his campaign leaflets, won comfortably and held the post for 26 years.
When the girls were old enough, Sadie signed them up for singing and dancing lessons. Before long they were performing on stage across the northeastern United States, wearing identical outfits and delighting audiences during the Depression.
But their outward appeal concealed the darkness of their family life. Carl, their father, was a Nazi sympathiser of German descent, and an extreme authoritarian whose mother had been mentally disturbed. He was dismayed when his wife gave birth to quads. 'What will they think my wife is — a bitch dog,' he allegedly exclaimed.
He refused to let his daughters mix with other children or take part in extracurricular school activities. He did not take them on vacations, allow them to wear trousers or let them enjoy themselves at weekends. As they grew up he banned them from having boyfriends and began sexually abusing them. He had two of them — Helen and Wilma — surgically circumcised in their teens to prevent them from masturbating.
He was 'one of the worst fathers on earth' and their home was a 'house of horrors', said Audrey Clare Farley, an academic who revealed their true story in a 2023 book entitled Girls and Their Monsters. They were 'presented as smiling and happy children when they were being controlled, manipulated and abused by their dad. Since their mom did nothing to stop him, she was complicit.'
Sarah, the last surviving sibling, had written in a 2015 memoir, The Morlok Quadruplets: The Alphabet Sisters: 'We often felt like little tin soldiers marching to my father's rules. It was kind of sad growing up. We felt so restricted.' The memoir glossed over the horrors of her youth.
One by one the girls developed mental problems. Helen was removed from school the year Sadie was named Lansing's mother of the year, and kept at home. Edna quit her job at 20 and was put in an institution. A year later Wilma was diagnosed with schizophrenia, followed by Sarah. All but Sarah were given electroconvulsive therapy.
When the girls turned 24, they were invited to participate in a study of schizophrenia at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). They lived on its campus in Bethesda, Maryland, for the next three years while a large team of psychologists, psychoanalysts, sociologists and other experts sought to determine whether their illness was caused by nature or nurture.
The result was a rather inconclusive 636-page tome entitled 'The Genain Quadruplets: A Case Study and Theoretical Analysis of Heredity and Environment in Schizophrenia', which was published in 1963. The quads were given the pseudonym 'Genain' — Greek for 'dire birth' — to protect their privacy. Of the four girls, only Sarah recovered sufficiently to lead an independent life, perhaps because she received better treatment than her siblings at the NIMH or because she had been less badly abused by her father.
While the other three returned to Lansing and were eventually institutionalised at the now-defunct Northville Psychiatric Hospital, she remained in the Washington-Baltimore area and found work as a legal secretary. In 1961 she married George Cotton, an air force officer whom she had met through her church youth group. They had three children: a girl who died at birth and two sons, William, who died in 1994, and David.
It was not a happy marriage, but Sarah loyally stayed with her husband until he left her. Later in life she followed David back to her native Michigan. Wilma died in 2002, Helen in 2003 and Edna in 2015, leaving her as the last of the once-famous 'Morlok Quads'.
Sarah Morlok Cotton was born on May 19, 1930. She died on July 7, 2025, aged 95

Inside Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock's love story that ended in tragedy
Kelly Clarkson shared a deeply personal love story with her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock — a romance that ultimately ended in heartbreak with his untimely death at 48 following a battle with cancer. On Thursday, a family representative confirmed that Blackstock — Clarkson's ex-husband of seven years and father of her two children — had died after a three-year battle with cancer. News of his death came just hours after Clarkson, 43, announced she was postponing the remaining dates of her Las Vegas residency in August, citing the severity of her ex-husband's condition. 'While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children's father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them,' wrote the Grammy winner, who shares daughter River Rose, 10, and son Remington, 8, with Blackstock. Fans were deeply moved — though not surprised — by Clarkson's gesture, knowing the bond the former couple once shared. From a professional connection that evolved into a whirlwind romance, to building a family together before their eventual divorce, here's a look back at Kelly and Brandon's love story — one that ended in unimaginable tragedy. It all started long before they ever became a couple. Clarkson and Blackstock first met in May 2006 at a rehearsal for the Academy of Country Music Awards — and for Clarkson, it was unforgettable. 'I've only had three other boyfriends that I dated, and not really seriously,' she told People in 2013. 'This guy walks by, making everybody laugh. I said, "I'm gonna end up with him. I know it."' Years later, in 2017, Clarkson revealed even more about that fateful night. 'My guitar player's wife Ashley was my date for that night and we had just both been in crap relationships,' she shared. 'Sometimes it sucks dating because it's so many wrong ones until you get the right one. And we were like, 'OK, what we've been doing wrong here' — because it was a country music event and we're both southern girls — we were like, 'We've been dating skinny jeans and we need Wranglers.'" Then came the moment that sealed it for her: 'Literally, I'm not joking, he walked past us at that time. And he walked by, I was ready to take it all off. I just felt something.' At the time, Blackstock was still married to his first wife, Melissa Ashworth. It wasn't until 2012 — after Blackstock's divorce — that he and Clarkson officially started dating. Interestingly, they already shared a professional link, as Blackstock's father Narvel was Clarkson's longtime manager. The two crossed paths again at the Super Bowl in 2012. Clarkson was performing the national anthem, while Blackstock's client, Blake Shelton, was singing America the Beautiful with Miranda Lambert. Clarkson later admitted to SiriusXM that her nerves had little to do with the massive audience. 'I was so nervous because it wasn't that I didn't want to suck for the millions of people watching, I didn't want to suck because I was trying to impress a guy,' she said. 'I wanted him to be like, 'Damn.' It had nothing to do with the Super Bowl!"' The American Idol alum added: 'We didn't even know each other, but he had walked past me once and there was a moment in my crazy head. He thought I hated him, too. When I finally confessed that, 'I really dig you,' he was so shocked because he thought I hated him. I hadn't let on that I liked him. Inside I was like, 'Ask me out!' but outside I was like, 'I love being single and coming home every night alone. It's awesome.'" Their first official date was on February 11, 2012, and by December of that year, Blackstock had proposed — leaving Clarkson overjoyed. 'I'M ENGAGED!!!!!' she tweeted at the time. 'I wanted y'all to know!! Happiest night of my life last night! I am so lucky and am with the greatest man ever.' She later opened up to People about the low-key moment. While relaxing at home in Nashville, Clarkson thanked Blackstock for simply being good to her. 'Out of nowhere I just said, 'Thanks for being an awesome guy.' I've never been loved properly by a man, and I was just like, 'I thank you so much for that.'" Then came the big question. 'Not a damn clue!" she said of whether she saw it coming. 'If I did, I would have worn something besides Uggs and a sweatshirt with no bra.' They tied the knot on October 20, 2013. 'I'm officially Mrs. Blackstock :)' Clarkson tweeted. 'We got married yesterday at Blackberry Farms in TN, the most beautiful place ever!' Clarkson and Blackstock then welcomed River Rose on June 12, 2014. 'Our baby girl River Rose Blackstock arrived on June 12th!' Clarkson announced. 'Thank you everyone for all of your well wishes! Brandon and I are on cloud 9!!' During a 2015 concert, Clarkson surprised fans with an emotional onstage announcement: she was pregnant again. After finishing the song, she added, 'I'd like to apologize to my husband. That was not planned. I just didn't want you to think I was crazy or something. Honestly, I'm just so hormonal today. … I haven't vomited yet. That is a freakin' win, y'all.' On April 12, 2016, the couple welcomed their son, Remington Alexander. 'Meet Remy, our newest [addition] to the family!' Clarkson tweeted at the time. By 2019, the couple had grown their bond both personally and professionally — with Clarkson crediting Blackstock for encouraging her to launch her talk show. But behind the scenes, cracks had begun to form. In June 2020, Clarkson filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. In November, Clarkson was granted primary physical custody of River and Remington. Court documents cited increased conflict and issues of trust between the two, complicating their ability to co-parent. The divorce proceedings also became contentious over money. Blackstock initially sought $301,000 a month in spousal support and $135,000 in child support. A judge eventually ordered Clarkson to pay a combined $200,000 monthly. By August 2021, a judge signed off on the dissolution of their marriage, and Clarkson was declared legally single. One major sticking point had been their Montana ranch. Though an L.A. judge ruled in Clarkson's favor based on their prenup, Blackstock claimed the property was 'marital.' Clarkson later agreed to give him 5.12% of the ranch's value — or $908,800 of its total $17.75 million worth. Their divorce was finalized in March 2022 and Clarkson was ordered to make a one-time payment of just over $1.3 million, along with ongoing support payments. In a March 2023 episode of Angie Martinez's IRL podcast, Clarkson reflected on the painful decision to walk away from the marriage. 'I think the thing about divorce — especially having it publicized, and people thinking they know the whole thing — the hardest part of that is, like, it wasn't an overnight decision,' she said. 'I wanted to make it beautiful. I wanted to make it awesome. I wanted to make it everything it possibly could be, and sometimes that just doesn't happen.' Blackstock is also survived by children Savannah Blackstock and Seth Blackstock, from his previous marriage to Ashworth.

Joy Taylor, 38, reveals the truth about dating 25-year-olds after being accused of sleeping with colleagues to boost career
Recently-fired Fox Sports star Joy Taylor is setting the record straight on her dating habits after a clip of her speaking about younger men went viral. Back in May, before she was axed from the network, Taylor revealed on 'The Truth After Dark' that she 'would not date younger than 25, 26' to the shock of hosts Paul Pierce and Azar Farideh. Taylor, 38, added, 'Young men are very aggressive and do not care how old I am.' That clip has since 'haunted' her ever since, causing her to clarify her position on pursuing romance with those younger than her. In an appearance on the 'Hot Mics' show - hosted by 'Extra' presenter Billy Bush - Taylor stressed that she isn't a 'cougar'. When Bush asked her about the clip, Taylor said, 'I am never gonna live this down and it is now haunting me... I've been dealing with these young men I''m like - I'm sorry, I just wanna be clear: I'm not dating [25-year-olds].' 'I made a mistake because no 70-year-olds are calling me,' she joked before adding, 'I date men my age, I'm 38... that is who I'm dating.' Bush did ask Taylor what is the lowest age she would date, but Taylor didn't respond to either of those questions directly. Taylor was recently let go by Fox as the company instituted a massive re-shuffling of their daytime and afternoon programming. Not only was Taylor left behind by the network, but Fox also cut the show that she hosted - 'Speak' - entirely. This comes as the company is dealing with the aftermath of a sex scandal - where Taylor was alleged to have had sexual relations with multiple higher-ups in order to advance her career. She has denied the allegations. When asked by Bush what her next career steps are, Taylor said, 'I definitely will be in sports, I love sports, I still have a lot to say about sports, and I will have a platform that is following and covering sports for sure. 'I love the momentum that "Too Personal" [her podcast] has and I've really appreciated the support and the reaction to it. I'm happy to have my own platform because I think that's really important anyway. 'I have a lot of opinions about a lot of different things, so it's a space that I'm grateful to have especially in these insane times.'
