Melodi, TV3 under fire for 'making' Bella Astillah award ex-husband's scandal Sophia, netizens not holding back

SHAH ALAM - TV3 and its show Melodi are facing intense backlash online after a controversial moment at the 2025 Melodi Hottest Awards (AMT25), where singer and actress Bella Astillah was made to present an award to her ex-husband's alleged former flame, Sophia Albarakbah.
The incident reignited a highly publicised scandal and triggered accusations of emotional exploitation and insensitivity.

The AMT25 finale, held at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC), became the talk of the nation, not because of the winners but due to the visibly tense exchange between Bella and Sophia on stage.
Bella, whose full name is Dayang Ara Nabellah Awang Astillah, 31, was presenting the award for Hottest Female Celebrity alongside Muar Member of Parliament (MP) Syed Saddiq.
When announcing Sophia as the winner, Bella delivered the line:
'Huh, this one I know very well, Sophia.'
Her expression, tone and body language made it clear that the moment was anything but casual.
Bella did not greet, look at or stand next to Sophia as she handed her the trophy; visibly uncomfortable throughout the encounter.
The moment, now viral across social media platforms, sparked a storm of criticism against TV3 and Melodi, with many accusing the network of deliberately setting up the encounter to stir drama and boost ratings.
Netizens were swift and vocal in their condemnation of the organisers.
Instagram user @fatinnuridayu wrote: 'Bella looked like she was holding back. Her voice was barely audible. Like she was about to have an anxiety attack. Who made Bella announce Sophia's part? Are they ignorant or just deliberately cruel? This is outrageous.'
Another user, @asfa_azfarizah, echoed the sentiment: 'Why did Bella have to announce that part? Melodi?'
@ayu_mashruddin criticised the decision-making behind the event: 'Whoever scheduled Bella to hand the award for that category, senseless move. Is TV3 desperate for cheap virality?'
In contrast, some praised Bella's composure despite the difficult situation. User @kupluv commented: 'Well done Bella. Even though Melodi tried to stir drama, you handled it like a queen. You did it well, slay girl!'
The awkward encounter reignited memories of a 2023 scandal involving Bella, Sophia and Bella's then-husband, singer Aliff Aziz.
At the time, Sophia was accused of being the third party in Bella and Aliff's marriage during the filming of 'Ku Akan Kau Dengan Bismillah'.
Bella publicly shared screenshots showing Sophia apologising and expressing her wish to 'clear the air.'

The issue became one of the most talked-about entertainment controversies of the year.
Bella and Aliff, who married in 2016, were officially divorced for the second time on June 13, 2024, with one revocation (talak satu).
They share two children: Ayden Adrian and Ara Adreanna.
Following the ceremony, Bella was spotted by reporters but quickly dodged questions, appearing visibly distressed.
Her silence only further fuelled public anger and speculation about the organisers' motives.
Social media has since erupted with criticism of TV3 and Melodi, with users accusing the broadcaster of lacking empathy and professionalism.
While Melodi and TV3 may have aimed to create a dramatic awards night, they now face serious questions about ethics, compassion and emotional responsibility.
For many, the Bella-Sophia incident was not entertainment; it was a raw, painful reminder of unresolved wounds, played out for the cameras.
Whether TV3 will respond to the backlash remains to be seen, but one thing is clear; audiences are not staying silent.

Adira, 33, considers Bella, 31, to be like a sister. She told Harian Metro that the two remain close and communicate regularly on WhatsApp. "I messaged her yesterday to offer my encouragement. If she's happy, I'm happy. If she's down, I feel it too. All I can do is pray for the best for her," Adira was quoted as saying. When asked about the incident at AMT 2025 involving Bella and actress Sophia Albarakbah, Adira chose not to comment. She said that she prefers to not get involved but always wishes Bella happiness. Ah Yauddin's hardship went viral after a video of him was shared on Instagram, showing how he tirelessly cared for his wife, who is wheelchair-bound due to stroke. Despite her condition, the man who is suffering from kidney disease continued selling drinks at Pasar Malam Pantai Dalam in Kuala Lumpur to support them both. What moved many even more was the fact that he had been carrying his wife up and down four flights of stairs every day in a walk-up flat with no lift. Caprice, known for using his platform to spotlight social issues, was among those who responded. He tracked down the couple and helped them relocate to a landed home, lifting the physical burden that had weighed on Ah Yauddin for years. Through his initiative, the first year of rent for the new home was fully paid off, giving the couple much-needed stability and peace of mind. But his compassion didn't stop there. Recognising the power of community, Caprice launched a crowdfunding campaign to allow the public to contribute, quickly turning one man's hardship into a shared mission of care and dignity. The response from the public was swift and heartwarming. Instagram users flooded the comments section with words of encouragement and praise. Instagram user @bellazazali wrote: 'MasyaaAllah tabarakallah. Just two days ago, I said in my heart that I hoped someone would help this uncle find a landed home. Subhanallah, the power of Allah — this uncle truly and sincerely loves his wife. Thank you so much, Caprice, for helping and using your platform so that all of us can come together to support him. This is the best content so far. Salute to you.' Another user, @ commented: 'From this uncle's story, we learn three things. First, that true love can last until paradise, InsyaAllah. Second, the importance of patience when facing trials. Third, the value of showing kindness to others. Thank you, Caprice.' User @hafizhamids also praised Caprice saying 'Allahuakbar. You made my day, Caprice. May all your efforts and kindness return to you and your family in the best of ways.' Donations began pouring in, alongside offers of help, messages of hope and expressions of unity. Caprice's gesture gave the elderly couple a fresh start in life. More than that, it sparked a wave of generosity, reminding Malaysians of the strength of compassion and the profound impact of helping others with a sincere heart.

Trump praises Sydney Sweeney ad, American Eagle shares jump most since 2000

US President Donald Trump says that American Eagle's recent marketing blitz with actress Sydney Sweeney is the 'HOTTEST ad out there'. Photos: AP, American Eagle/Instagram American Eagle Outfitters shares jumped the most since 2000 on Aug 4 after United States President Donald Trump touted the company's ads – pushing the retailer's stock into meme stock territory. The shares spiked 24% on Aug 4 after Trump said in a social media post that American Eagle's recent marketing blitz with American actress Sydney Sweeney, 27, is the 'HOTTEST ad out there.' He said American Eagle jeans are 'flying off the shelves'. It is not yet clear whether the ad campaign – which controversially celebrates Sweeney's genetic traits as well as her jeans – is actually convincing shoppers to buy the company's apparel. Analysts say the real test will be how American Eagle performs during the crucial back-to-school season as consumers begin to stock up on jeans and other autumn essentials. So while Trump's comments on Aug 4 do not reveal any new information about the company's performance, they do add to the hype around American Eagle shares. And that has drawn investors betting on the hype itself – a telltale sign of a meme stock. 'What are meme stocks for the most part? Individual investors chasing after the hottest stock,' said Matt Maley, chief market strategy at Miller Tabak & Co. The move on Aug 4 pared the stock's year-to-date decline to 20%. The company has been battered by sluggish demand and last quarter, it registered a US$75 million charge related to a writedown of its spring and summer merchandise. Some traders who drove up the shares on Aug 4 are probably betting that the spotlight on the company will translate into greater sales. But that alone does not explain the magnitude of the share move, Maley said, adding that American Eagle executives should seize on the interest by, for example, issuing more shares. Meme stock darlings AMC Entertainment Holdings and GameStop have done this in the past. Representatives for American Eagle did not immediately respond to a request for comment. 'In the short term, traders are very adept at chasing hype,' said Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers. 'If one believes that the more this is talked about, the better it is for the stock, then that certainly is a boon.' 'Whether or not that translates into more or fewer people buying the actual products' after Mr Trump weighed in will not be clear for 'days, weeks or quarters', Sosnick added. The interest in American Eagle is likely to continue, even if there is not another major precipitating event like a social media post by the US president. 'The momentum is there,' Maley said. 'Today's marketplace with algorithmic trading, not only does it create buyers, but it eliminates sellers.' While Sweeney, a sought-after face for brands, has provided a pop for stocks in the past, those gains have not always endured. A year ago, footwear company Crocs disclosed Sweeney as a global spokesperson for its Heydude line. The stock rose 4.1% on the day of the announcement, but since then, shares are down nearly 30% per cent. – Bloomberg
