Perak gov't mulls aid for struggling M40 households
IPOH: The Perak government is looking into assisting struggling M40 (middle income) households, said State Executive Councillor for Women, Family, Community Welfare and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Salbiah Mohamed.
Salbiah said several medium- and long-term strategies are being considered to assist this 'ineligible but struggling' group.
'Among them are productivity-based support through entrepreneurship development programmes, skills training, and access to digitalisation to boost household income, rather than solely relying on direct aid.
'In addition, through Targeted Subsidies and the Affordable Lifestyle Initiative, the State Government could also explore measures such as preschool education discounts, childcare subsidies, affordable essential goods purchase programmes (BAMM), or specific discount cards that benefit M40 families more flexibly,' she said.
She said this when winding up debate on the motion of thanks for the Royal Address at the State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.
Salbiah added that strategic partnerships with the private sector and government-linked companies are also being considered to offer high-impact community service programmes such as mental health support, household financial management, and debt management assistance.
'The issues faced by the M40 group must be viewed within a broader and more inclusive framework. The State Government will conduct a comprehensive review of the proposals and refine existing aid policies and programmes to be more responsive, especially for households that are increasingly 'slipping' from a stable status into a group that requires attention,' she said.

'This is crucial to ensure that any weaknesses or confusion are not hidden but instead addressed openly and responsibly,' he said in a statement. He urged KPDN to adopt a more inclusive and trader-friendly approach, while also calling on the State Government to be proactive in explaining the matter to the public. 'It is the State Government's responsibility to provide complete information and assist small traders in applying for the Scheduled Controlled Goods Permit (PBKB). 'Such efforts will not only strengthen compliance with regulations but also protect the survival of small businesses, which are the backbone of the local economy,' he said. He added that if the government deems the use of domestic cooking gas unsuitable for certain food premises, then guidelines and implementation conditions must be clearly and transparently communicated. 'There must be a balance between enforcement and consideration of on-the-ground realities. That balance is the foundation of administrative efficiency and public well-being. New IRB Sabah Director calls on Hajiji

Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor received a courtesy call from the new Director of the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) Sabah, Datin Dayang Halimah Awang Ahmad, at his office in Menara Kinabalu on Thursday. Dayang Halimah, who hails from Tawau, has held the position since March 1, 2025. Advertisement Prior to this, she served as the State Operations Director (Corporate Tax Audit) of IRB Sabah. Hajiji congratulated Dayang Halimah on her appointment and expressed confidence that the close ties between the State Government and IRB would be further strengthened to ensure more efficient and comprehensive revenue management. He said the Government remains committed to supporting efforts to enhance revenue collection in a fair and effective manner, in line with the State's development needs and the wellbeing of its people. Dayang Halimah said the visit was to introduce herself, as well as to discuss strategic collaboration between IRB and the State Government in areas such as tax compliance and revenue management. During the meeting, she also shared the direction and plans of IRB Sabah, including initiatives to expand service outreach and raise public awareness on taxation. On the same day, Hajiji also received a courtesy call from the Assistant Chief of the Army Reserve Force, Major General Dato' Mohammad Razeif Che Ahmad. He was accompanied by the Fifth Infantry Division Commander Major General Dato' Noorrul Azril Ariffin and the Army Planning and Development Director Colonel Burhan Sagoni. Klias hardcore poverty initiative bears fruit

Klias Assemblyman Datuk Isnin Aliasnih said this success was the result of the continuous efforts of the State Government under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor as part of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) agenda. Advertisement Isnin said E-Kasih data showed there were 168 hardcore poor in Klias in 2023, which decreased to 11 by the end of 2024 and finally reached zero this year. 'This year, it is zero, meaning there are no more hardcore poor in Klias. This shows that the government's various initiatives to address this issue have been effective. 'The government provided extensive assistance to ensure these individuals rose above the poverty line, as we understood their struggles, some earning less than RM250 a month and some even without homes,' 'We provided them with SMJ homes and enrolled them in the Mini Estet Sejahtera (Mesej) programme to boost their economic standing. They have now successfully escaped poverty.' He said this to reporters after officiating the Klias Gagasan Rakyat Annual Delegates Meeting at Dewan Pa' Musa here. Isnin, who is also Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing, said five dilapidated schools in the area will be upgraded with an allocation of RM118 million. The schools are SK Mempagar, SK Takuli, SK Rancangan Klias, SK Pintas and SK Kubu. Additionally, a RM35 million allocation has been approved for the construction of the Beaufort District Education Office. 'My voice was heard during the Gagasan Rakyat Annual Assembly debate last year on education issues, leading to this substantial allocation for Klias. 'Not just that, Beaufort is also set to become one of Sabah's industrial hubs with a 5,000-acre area to be developed as an industrial centre. 'Once this project begins, it will impact local development and the economy, especially in Klias. The community must seize this opportunity,' he said. When asked about preparations for the 17th State Election, Isnin, who is also a Gagasan Rakyat Supreme Council Member said the party machinery is fully prepared to defend the Klias seat at any time. 'All party wings, including grassroots machinery, have been instructed to be ready.
