Sabah medical body lauds decision to keep 42-hour work week

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Medical Services Union (SMSU) has lauded the Federal Government's decision to retain the 42-hour work week for specific healthcare personnel, describing it as 'timely and compassionate'. SMSU President Ajulahin Japin, who also heads the Coalition of President and General Secretary of 26 healthcare workers' unions under the Ministry of Health, said the announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on July 11 reflects the administration's understanding of the immense workload carried by frontline health workers.
Advertisement The decision, made during an official meeting with healthcare unions at the Prime Minister's Office, applies to medical officers, nurses, community nurses and healthcare assistants. 'This is the result of a long and persistent campaign by unions across the country. We appreciate the Prime Minister's and the Madani Government's sensitivity and willingness to engage with us,' Ajulahin said in a statement. He said the move acknowledges the critical role of healthcare staff who serve as the backbone of the country's medical services and often work beyond their limits to meet the demands of the system. However, SMSU urged the Government not to stop there. The union is calling for the same consideration to be extended to other shift-based healthcare personnel such as pharmacy assistants, ambulance drivers and clinical support staff who, it said, face similarly demanding working conditions. 'Social justice and equitable treatment for all healthcare workers are crucial to sustaining morale and ensuring the delivery of quality services,' Ajulahin said. Anwar wants health ministry to speed up doctor hiring

(Freepik pic) PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has instructed the health ministry to expedite the filling of more than 4,000 permanent government doctor positions, according to government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil. Fahmi, who is also the communications minister, said Anwar raised the matter at today's Cabinet meeting, expressing concern that the hiring process was moving too slowly. 'Initially, the health ministry expected most of the positions to be filled by November, but the prime minister felt that timeline was too drawn-out. As a result, the ministry has been asked to fast-track the process. 'There is an urgent need to fill these vacancies. It's not a small number,' Fahmi told a press conference at the communications ministry in Putrajaya today. He said health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad has given his commitment to accelerate and simplify the recruitment process without compromising necessary procedures. On Tuesday, Anwar, while announcing new initiatives for the people, said the government would fast-track the filling of 4,352 permanent positions for government doctors this year, including contract-appointed medical officers. He said the move was driven by the critical need for more doctors in the healthcare sector. The health ministry is also preparing a paper for the Cabinet to address the ongoing nationwide shortage of healthcare personnel.

Two Sabah media practitioners receive aid from Tabung Kasih@Hawana

One of the recipients, Sabah State Information Department photographer Vicky Sylvester Matanjang, 52, said he was moved by the kind gesture of Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, who personally visited his home in Kampung Hungab here today to deliver the contribution. 'I feel appreciated, even though I'm just a photographer. Today is my first day back at work, but I'm only doing light duties as I haven't fully recovered,' said Vicky, who sustained serious injuries in a road accident in March. He said the initiative also reflected the Madani government's concern for the welfare of those facing hardship, especially media practitioners nationwide. Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa; Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin; Sabah State Information Department director Jainisah Mohd Noor; and Sabah Journalists Association (SJA) president Mariah Doksil. Sabah Media journalist Hafizul Andie Zulkarnain, 35, who is still recovering from surgery for a bowel complication and ruptured appendix in June, expressed his heartfelt thanks after receiving the contribution from Nur-ul Afida at his residence in Sepanggar, Kota Kinabalu, last Tuesday. 'Thank you for taking the time to visit and hand over the contribution. It will definitely help with my treatment expenses during my recovery,' he said. Meanwhile, Nur-ul Afida said media associations in Sabah could reach out to the secretariat of Tabung Kasih@Hawana, managed by Bernama, to provide information on media practitioners facing health issues or hardships. 'I would like to seek the cooperation of media associations in Sabah to share information with us so that we can assist our fellow media practitioners in need,' she said. Meanwhile, Mariah expressed hope that the SJA could serve as a key platform for coordinating aid to media practitioners in need. 'We will suggest the names of those eligible to receive donations and assist in providing the necessary information,' she said. The Tabung Kasih@Hawana initiative reflects the spirit of Malaysia Madani by upholding values of compassion and care, particularly for media practitioners who have long contributed to society but are now facing life or health challenges. The fund was established as a Communications Ministry initiative and implemented through Bernama to support serving and retired journalists and other media practitioners who are facing hardships or financial difficulties. Malaysian doctor dies while hiking at Italy's Dolomites

(EPA Images pic) PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian doctor was found dead while hiking at the Dolomites in Italy, with the 60-year-old believed to have fallen from a height. Dr Khaw Bee Ling, a specialist at Metro Specialist Hospital in Sungai Petani, Kedah, was reported missing on July 18 while hiking at Croda del Becco. She was reportedly hiking with a friend when they decided to split up, with Khaw continuing the ascent while her friend turned back, Buletin TV3 reported. At some point, Khaw managed to send a message to her friend saying she was lost and needed help, but she could not be reached after that. Her friend contacted the authorities, who launched a search operation using a helicopter, drones and tracker dogs to look for Khaw. She was found dead in a crevice on July 19.
