James Gunn Says He "Hates" Those PEACEMAKER Cameos in BLACK ADAM and SHAZAM 2, Promises Clarity in Season 2 — GeekTyrant
In a recent interview with Den of Geek, Gunn promised that Peacemaker Season 2 will finally sort out the messy continuity fans have been scratching their heads over. Gunn explained:
'There are certain things from the old universe that we refer to in Peacemaker season 2, but until then, they're not canon. Almost everything from season 1 is canon, but season 2 will explain everything that is or is not canon.'
That means the weird limbo Peacemaker currently exists in, caught between two cinematic universes, will finally be addressed. For now, though, Gunn has made it clear what's out: those cameos in Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Black Adam .
'They're not canon! I hate it!' Gunn said, adding that he previously had 'no idea' why characters like Harcourt and Economos were recruiting for the Justice Society in those films.
It's a fair point. Right now, remnants of the DCEU keep bleeding into the reboot, and for fans hoping for a clean slate, the result is pure chaos.
Still, Gunn is confident that Season 2 of Peacemaker will bring order to the madness. The upcoming episodes will explore John Cena's unhinged hero as he officially crosses into the DCU, and based on the latest trailer, things are going to get wild.
Gunn confirmed that the new season will dive deep into the concept of 'pocket universes,' an idea first introduced in his upcoming Superman film.
When asked about the pocket universes, Gunn replied: 'The whole [second] season of Peacemaker revolves around that. Yes, absolutely it is. You'll see in Peacemaker [season 2], too… It's just Lex's version is much jankier than the one in Peacemaker . The one in Peacemaker works better. What the whole season of Peacemaker revolves around is that.'
Gunn wants fans to know this isn't a typical multiverse mashup like Spider-Man: No Way Home . He described his approach as something more intimate:
'I think of Peacemaker as more of a high-concept story about one other world. It's more akin to Philip Roth's [1996 novel] The Counterlife than it is to the third Spider-Man movie… I love that movie, but it isn't about that.
'It isn't Deadpool & Wolverine . It's really a very simple, simple story about [Chris Smith's] relationship to this one other world.'
While Gunn is keeping big-picture DCU details under wraps, he recently teased that there's a central narrative thread connecting these projects, something nobody has guessed yet.
'It's not what anyone thinks. It's not what anyone would guess. But I think if people watch the next season of Peacemaker , they'll see where a lot of these things are going, and have a little bit more of a sense of maybe what can happen.'
Peacemaker Season 2 hits HBO on August 21, and if Gunn is to be believed, this is where all the confusion finally gets sorted out.

‘Fantastic Four: First Steps' scores Marvel's first $100 million box office opening of 2025
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Marvel's first family has finally found box office gold. 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps,' the first film about the superheroes made under the guidance of Kevin Feige and the Walt Disney Co., earned $118 million in its first weekend in 4,125 North American theaters, according to studio estimates Sunday. That makes it the fourth biggest opening of the year, behind 'A Minecraft Movie,' 'Lilo & Stitch' and 'Superman,' and the biggest Marvel opening since 'Deadpool & Wolverine' grossed $211 million out of the gate last summer. Internationally, 'Fantastic Four' made $100 million from 52 territories, adding up to a $218 million worldwide debut. The numbers were within the range the studio was expecting. The film arrived in the wake of another big superhero reboot, James Gunn's 'Superman,' which opened three weekends ago and has already crossed $500 million globally. That film, from the other main player in comic book films, DC Studios, took second place with $24.9 million domestically. 'First Steps' is the latest attempt at bringing the superhuman family to the big screen, following lackluster performances for other versions. The film, based on the original Marvel comics, is set during the 1960s in a retro-futuristic world led by the Fantastic Four, a family of astronauts-turned-superhuman from exposure to cosmic rays during a space mission. The family is made up of Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), who can stretch his body to incredible lengths; Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), who can render herself invisible; Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn), who transforms into a fiery human torch; and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), who possesses tremendous superhuman strength with his stone-like flesh. The movie takes place four years after the family gained powers, during which Reed's inventions have transformed technology, and Sue's diplomacy has led to global peace. Both audiences and critics responded positively to the film, which currently has an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and promising exit poll responses from opening weekend ticket buyers. An estimated 46% of audiences chose to see it on premium screens, including IMAX and other large formats. The once towering Marvel is working to rebuild audience enthusiasm for its films and characters. Its two previous offerings this year did not reach the cosmic box office heights of 'Deadpool & Wolverine," which made over $1.3 billion, or those of the 'Avengers'-era. But critically, the films have been on an upswing since the poorly reviewed 'Captain America: Brave New World,' which ultimately grossed $415 million worldwide. 'Thunderbolts," which jumpstarted the summer movie season, was better received critically but financially is capping out at just over $382 million globally. Like Deadpool and Wolverine, the Fantastic Four characters had been under the banner of 20th Century Fox for years. The studio produced two critically loathed, but decently profitable attempts in the mid-2000s with future Captain America Chris Evans as the Human Torch. In 2015, it tried again (unsuccessfully) with Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller. They got another chance after Disney's $71 billion acquisition of Fox's entertainment assets in 2019. Top 10 movies by domestic box office With final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore: 1. 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps,' $118 million. 2. 'Superman,' $24.9 million. 3. 'Jurassic World Rebirth,' $13 million. 4. 'F1: The Movie,' $6.2 million. 5. 'Smurfs,' $5.4 million. 6. 'I Know What You Did Last Summer,' $5.1 million. 7. 'How to Train Your Dragon,' $2.8 million. 8. 'Eddington,' $1.7 million. 9. 'Saiyaara,' $1.3 million. 10. 'Oh, Hi!,' $1.1 million.

Prepare to Celebrate 60 Years of ‘Star Trek' With Nacelle's Nostalgic Figures
Star Trek turns 60 next year, and the franchise is preparing to celebrate in style, especially with a brand new show on the way in Starfleet Academy. But outside of streaming, you'll be able to celebrate in style with Nacelle's new line of Star Trek action figures, which will dedicate a whole wave to the original series next year—and io9 has your first up-close look at one of them. As previously (and exclusively) revealed by io9 this past Friday, the third wave of Nacelle's Star Trek line is set to release in 2026. While Nacelle made waves announcing its Trek line by eschewing the typical process of making a Captain Picard and Captain Kirk and then calling it a day—with wave one including an eclectic mix of deep-cut characters, from Tuvix, to Weyoun, to Admiral Jellico—wave 3 of the series will buck that trend and go all in on the original Trek as an anniversary celebration. All the main crew and then some will be part of the wave, including Kirk, Spock, Scotty, Chekov, Sulu, Doctor McCoy, Nurse Chapel, Yeoman Rand, and a mystery two-pack being kept under wraps. And, of course, that lineup wouldn't be complete without Enterprise's premiere xenolinguist and communications officer, Nyota Uhura, who you can see below in all her action figure render glory, teased at SDCC during Nacelle's panel, but making its online debut here on io9! As you can see, at least one of Uhura's accessories will be a classic phaser rifle—but you can expect her to come with a few more, based on Nacelle's plans for their other Trek figures. We'll at least need a separate teeny-tiny communication earpiece, or an alternate head of her using it, for sure! Wave 3 of Nacelle's Star Trek line is expected to launch some time in 2026. However, if you're like me and yearn to own a Weyoun action figure, you can preorder wave 1 now, due for release in late 2025. Want more io9 news? Check out when to expect the latest Marvel, Star Wars, and Star Trek releases, what's next for the DC Universe on film and TV, and everything you need to know about the future of Doctor Who.
