Ayushman Vay Vandana Scheme settles over 1.06 lakh claims: Govt
In October 2024, the scope of the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) was expanded to include all senior citizens aged 70 years and above, irrespective of their socio-economic status.
Under this initiative, beneficiaries can receive free treatment benefits of up to Rs 5 lakh per year through Ayushman Vay Vandana cards.
'As on date, over 1.06 lakh claims have been settled under Ayushman Vay Vandana scheme since its launch,' Jadhav said.
'A total of 75.41 lakh Ayushman Vay Vandana cards have been created, out of which 32.3 lakh cards have been created for female beneficiaries,' he added.
In addition, the portability feature of AB-PMJAY allows eligible beneficiaries -- including those under the Vay Vandana scheme -- to access healthcare services at any of the 31,466 empanelled hospitals across the country, regardless of their place of residence.
'This ensures seamless and equitable access to quality healthcare for the elderly population nationwide,' the MoS said.
'Vay Vandana scheme beneficiaries can also avail treatment through a vast network of 14,194 private healthcare providers empanelled under the scheme,' he noted.
To ensure quality and consistency in service delivery, the National Health Authority (NHA) issued comprehensive Hospital Empanelment and Management (HEM) Guidelines for the empanelment of hospitals under the AB-PMJAY.
The AB-PMJAY has emerged as one of the world's largest publicly funded health insurance schemes. It has enabled 8.59 crore hospital admissions worth Rs 1,19,858 crore, ensuring access to secondary and tertiary care without pushing families into debt, according to an official statement by the government.
Meanwhile, Jadhav also shared the steps taken to strengthen the district-level health system, such as the Pradhan Mantri-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM).
'PM-ABHIM has been launched with an outlay of Rs 64,180 crore over five years (FY 2021-26). The mission focuses on strengthening the capacities of health systems across all levels -- primary, secondary, and tertiary care -- to ensure effective response to current and future pandemics and disasters,' the Minister said.
Under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) components of PM-ABHIM, provision has been made to provide support for establishment of 602 Critical Care Hospital Blocks (CCBs) 50/100 bedded in all the districts with population of more than 5 lakhs during the scheme period i.e. from FY 2021-22 to FY 2025-26 including the ICU beds, he noted.

The government's Tele-MANAS helpline, launched in 2022, has received more than 2.38 million calls so far, offering support in 20 Indian languages. Apply by August 7 at Jamui's District Employment Office Educated job seekers in Bihar now have a rare opportunity to work abroad, with the state government opening up 5,000 job vacancies in Israel for the role of home-based caregivers. The Labour Resources Department has issued an official call for applications, with most of the positions earmarked for women. According to a public notification from the District Employment Office in Jamui, these overseas roles are being facilitated under an agreement with Israel, offering monthly salaries equivalent to Rs 1.61 lakh (USD 1,870 or 6,247.67 Israeli New Shekel). The contractual jobs span an initial two-year period, with an option for extension based on performance and further requirements. Eligibility Criteria Applicants must be between 25 and 45 years old, weigh at least 45 kg, and have a minimum height of 1.5 metres. A Class 10 pass certificate is the minimum educational requirement, along with proven proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English. A valid passport is also mandatory. While 90 percent of the posts will be reserved for women, the remaining 10 percent are open to men. Preference will be given to female candidates with prior training in General Duty Assistant (GDA), Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery (ANM), General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM), Diploma in Senior Care (DSC Nursing), or Post-BSc Nursing. Importantly, women who have never worked or traveled to Israel before will be given priority. Applicants must also be mentally and physically fit. A certificate from an authorised government agency attesting to eligibility is required, along with proof of completion of a care course involving at least 990 hours of training, including on-the-job training (OJT). Maharashtra to request Centre to include thalassemia under National Sickle Cell Disease Programme
Maharashtra Health Minister Prakash Abitkar has announced that the government would request the Union health ministry to include thalassemia under the National Sickle Cell Disease Programme, a move aimed at extending structured Central government benefits such as free diagnosis, treatment and welfare schemes to thalassemia patients. Thalassemia is one of the common hereditary blood disorders that impair the body's ability to make hemoglobin and healthy red blood cells. Untreated thalassemia can result in medical complications which may lead to death. The pre-natal test that is available in private health centres costs nearly Rs1,500, which many parents, especially those belonging to vulnerable communities, can't afford. Dr Chandrakala S, Head of Hematology at KEM Hospital, told Indian Express that nearly 100 adults and 100 children with thalassemia are currently under care in her department. 'Most of them are dependent on blood transfusions every month, starting from six months of age. Yet awareness about thalassemia is very, very low, not just among the public but even among many general physicians,' she said, while explaining the need for greater state support for early diagnosis and treatment. Carriers, who have a thalassemia trait, do not show symptoms and are often unaware unless specific blood tests such as HPLC are conducted. A recent study found that thalassemia prevalence among paediatric ward patients in Mumbai is nearly 6.2 percent. However, routine premarital and antenatal screening is rarely done. 'Screening happens on a case-to-case basis, not uniformly. Over 80 percent of severe cases I see in children are from couples who never realised they were both carriers,' said Dr Chandrakala.
