Lucknow: Praising Chief Minister
Yogi Adityanath
's leadership, defence minister
Rajnath Singh
on Tuesday lauded Uttar Pradesh for the "remarkable" implementation of central govt schemes in the health sector, alongside the execution of state initiatives.
In Lucknow for a day to participate in the silver jubilee celebrations of Dr KNS Memorial Hospital, Rajnath said, "Uttar Pradesh's enhanced healthcare system, particularly its ambulance services, medical treatment, and infrastructure, has become a model for other states."
Highly impressed with govt's tackling of Japanese Encephalitis in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Rajnath said, "Prior to 2017, the Purvanchal (eastern) region, particularly Gorakhpur, the CM's hometown, witnessed numerous child fatalities due to JE during the monsoon.
This tragic pattern persisted for four to five decades. Previous regimes had given up against this epidemic, considering these deaths inevitable.
"
"The prevalent belief was that monsoon seasons would invariably claim around 2,000 young lives annually. This perception shifted dramatically after the BJP's double-engine govt assumed office in Uttar Pradesh in 2017. The CM personally committed to addressing this severe health crisis, with the BJP govt initiating intensive measures.
Reports indicate that Yogi maintained direct oversight of all intervention levels," said Rajnath while addressing a large gathering of medical professionals at the private hospital.
He said, "Japanese Encephalitis-related child mortality has now decreased to single digits (nine per year), not only in Purvanchal but throughout Uttar Pradesh. This transformation demonstrates how effective leadership can overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges."
"Under Yogi's administration, the state is systematically establishing medical colleges across all districts. Notably, Uttar Pradesh now ranks second nationally in MBBS seat availability and leads in the number of medical colleges. UP currently operates 80 medical colleges, comprising 44 government institutions and 36 private establishments. Uttar Pradesh exemplifies successful public-private collaboration in healthcare.
This partnership model is expected to continue driving the state's progress," he added.

VIJAYAWADA: Concerns are mounting across the State as it witnessed a significant spike in Covid-19 cases over the past 48 hours. According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 31 new cases have been reported, pushing the number of active cases to 62 as of 8.00 am Friday—an increase of 12 from the previous day. Odisha Ramps Up Covid-19 Vigilance Amid National Surge: 38 Cases Reported

Amidst reports regarding a spike in Covid-19 cases across the country, the Odisha government has intensified its monitoring and containment measures to ensure public health safety across the state, said an official here on Friday. Referring to latest data released by the Health Department, a statement noted that a total of 755 samples have been tested in Odisha as of June 6, 2025. Of these, 38 samples have returned positive, with 9 individuals already recovered. The remaining 29 patients are in home isolation and reported to be stable. To align state-level strategies with national preparedness, the government of Odisha participated in a high-level virtual review meeting held on June 3, 2025, chaired by Dr. Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW), Government of India. The meeting included representatives from ICMR institutions, the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), State Surveillance Units, and various state health authorities. Following the meeting, the Union Health Ministry released a detailed press note noting that India currently has 4,302 active Covid-19 cases, with 864 new cases reported in the past 24 hours. Most of these cases are mild and are being managed at home. Since January 1, 2025, there have been 44 reported Covid-19-related deaths, mainly among individuals with comorbidities. 'Healthcare systems have been directed to ensure adequate oxygen supply, availability of ventilators, isolation beds, and essential medicines. Mock drills to test oxygen infrastructure and hospital-level readiness were conducted on June 2 and further planned for June 4–5. Surveillance of ILI and SARI cases has been intensified, and positive samples are being sent for Whole Genome Sequencing. The public has been advised to follow COVID-appropriate behaviour, including hand hygiene, cough etiquette, self-monitoring, and avoiding crowded spaces when symptomatic,' reads the statement. The Odisha government has reiterated its commitment to strictly implementing all precautionary measures and guidelines issued by the Centre, aiming to minimize the impact of the current Covid-19 surge and protect public health. The state government has requested people to remain vigilant, avoid panic, and rely only on verified sources such as the MoH&FW website and official bulletins for accurate information.

West Bengal LoP Suvendu Adhikari accuses State of ‘suppressing' fresh Covid data

Leader of Opposition of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Suvendu Adhikari on Friday accused the West Bengal government of keeping the State's Covid bulletin 'defunct' in a bid to 'suppress' the data on fresh Covid-positive cases in West Bengal. 'The State health department's Covid portal has been kept non-functioning to ensure the real number of Covid-positive cases does not get recorded there. The real Covid data is being suppressed in the same way that figures of dengue cases were suppressed,' Mr Adhikari said. Notably, official Covid bulletins have not been released on the State Health Department website since January 28, 2023. The bulletins, which were being uploaded almost daily since February 2020, carried facts and figures with respect to active Covid cases, fatalities, and recoveries in the State. The lack of updated data on fresh Covid cases on the West Bengal Health Department website assumes significance in the wake of a developing Covid surge in the country, where several positive cases are being recorded daily across States. A total of 55 people have died from Covid-related causes this year, according to the Covid dashboard operated by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. In the Union Health Ministry's Covid dashboard, West Bengal recorded the third-highest increase in Covid-positive cases (58) among the States between June 5 and June 6, accounting for a total of 596 active cases in the State. Meanwhile, 91 people were cured and discharged on June 6, amounting to a total of 218 cured Covid cases so far this year. So far, one person has died from Covid-related causes in West Bengal this year, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare data. On Friday, LoP Mr Adhikari also claimed to have accessed the State's 'accurate' district-wise Covid data. 'In Malda, for example, if 10 people are being tested for Covid, nine are being found to be positive,' he added. He further alleged that similar 'data suppression' was seen during the dengue wave. 'Doctors were scared of writing dengue as a diagnosis, in fear of transfer or torture. Now, the cases cannot be suppressed, so the government has stopped updating the data on the portal,' Mr Adhikari said. On being asked the source of the data he cited, the LoP said that the West Bengal administration does not just comprise 'Mamata Banerjee's people' but also supporters of the saffron party. Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh opposed Mr Adhikari's accusations, saying that the State government is monitoring the situation and taking necessary steps. 'People have been told to stay alert. The State is making necessary system-based arrangements. However, the BJP has a habit of using fearmongering as a political tool. They should focus on the Covid situation in saffron-ruled States. The situation is in control in West Bengal,' Mr Ghosh said. Rally for 'Nari Samman' On Friday, Mr Adhikari also announced that he will lead a 'Nari Samman Yatra' (rally for women's honour) on June 9 in Bolpur in West Bengal's Birbhum district. Recently, Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal was accused of verbally abusing and threatening the Officer-in-Charge of Bolpur police station and his female family members after the alleged audio of a phone call between Mr Mondal and the police officer went viral.
