A cooler costa: the summer glories of northern Spain's Costa Trasmiera

While we all know that 'costa' is simply the Spanish word for 'coast', for most of us it has a much wider meaning, evoking all sorts of images, both positive and negative. It may be beaches, fun, cold beers and tapas at a chiringuito (beach bar) with your feet in the sand. Perhaps you're thinking of childhood holidays in a thrillingly huge hotel, where you happily stuffed yourself with ice-cream and chips for a fortnight. More recent memories might revolve around showy beach clubs with exorbitant prices. If you've been to the costas of eastern or southern Spain in the past few years, however, you may have reluctantly concluded that your favourite resorts are now a bit too hot for comfort.
This year, there has been a lot of buzz about 'la España fresca', or cool Spain, but, in reality, Spaniards have been thronging the northern coast in summer for decades, decamping to Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country. This is particularly true for residents of Madrid and other cities in central Spain that are stifling in July and August.
Along the north coast, temperatures are usually more like those of Cornwall on a good summer's day. But be warned: you do get blisteringly hot spells, too, not to mention a greater risk of wet weather. I have trudged along beaches in driving rain in June, but enjoyed glorious sunshine and delicious swims well into September.
One of my favourite chunks of northern Spain is the Costa Trasmiera in Cantabria. If you are trying to cut down on flying, it has the advantage of being easy to reach by Brittany Ferries from Portsmouth or Plymouth to Santander, the regional capital, or from Portsmouth to Bilbao, an hour's drive away.
Sailing into the Bay of Santander, your eyes are drawn to the city, framed by its string of beaches, rising up on your right. Look left, however, and the view is rural rather than urban. A long spit of glittering sand, El Puntal, protrudes into the bay, with a green landscape stretching out behind it to the east. This is the Costa Trasmiera, a stretch of about 30 miles (50km) between Santander and the fishing town of Santoña.
A car is really useful to get to different beaches along the coast, but there are buses from Santander to the main places, such as Somo, Noja and Santoña. With a car, you are only likely to be travelling short distances each day, so using an EV is no problem.
If you liked the look of El Puntal as you were arriving, you can jump on a little ferry across the bay. I love doing this when I'm staying in Santander, as within a quarter of an hour I'm running into the sea, shrieking as the cold water hits my body. If you're used to wallowing in the tepid soup of the Mediterranean in summer, it might come as a bit of a shock.
Back on the sand, a chopped seafood salad and glass of rosé at Chiringuito El Puntal Tricio always hits the spot. Walking along the beach brings you to Somo, a hub for surfers from all over the world, where you'll find lots of cafes, bars and places offering surfing and paddleboarding tuition. Hotel Bemon Playa (doubles from €90 room-only) is in the thick of things if you fancy staying for a few days.
Heading east along the coast, it's one superb beach after another: Loredo, Langre, Galizano, Antuerta, Cuberris. Book a table for a lobster lunch or a seafood platter overlooking the sea at Hotel Astuy (doubles from €60 room-only) in Isla, where the crustaceans served in the restaurant are kept in seawater pools in caves below the building. The hotel is a good base for exploring the area, but just beyond Isla, right next to Playa de Ris, Camping Playa Joyel (pitches from €19.50) is one of several good campsites on the Costa Trasmiera, with lots of facilities to keep kids happy.
From the campsite, it's an easy walk into Noja, the main holiday town on the coast. Practical rather than pretty, for most of the year it is a sleepy place with a population of about 2,500. In summer, however, the number rises to an astounding 80,000-plus, mostly in second homes and holiday apartments – a much higher ratio of tourists and second-home owners to residents than in resorts on the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol. Families from other parts of Spain, especially the adjacent Basque Country, install themselves for the entire school holidays, which can stretch from late June until the second week of September.

Although there are vestiges in Noja of the village it once was – including the church of San Pedro on the main square and a handful of grand mansions – the streets are lined with apartment blocks, with shops, bars and restaurants at ground level. This may not be the most attractive place, but for the thousands who come here year after year, it has everything needed for a relaxing holiday with no delusions of grandeur or attempts at being cool. No one cares what you're wearing here.
With Playa de Ris on one side of Noja and the equally gorgeous Trengandín stretching away on the other (a path links the two), it's not hard to see how people while away a summer here with swims, picnics, leisurely walks, long lunches and sunset cocktails. Seafood is, of course, excellent, but the nécoras (velvet crabs) are particularly prized.
Those who can summon the energy to move on from Noja only have to round the El Brusco headland at the end of Trengandín to come upon yet another splendid beach. Berria is bordered by the Santoña, Victoria and Joyel marshlands, a nature reserve that attracts migratory birds from autumn to spring.
The adjacent town of Santoña marks the end of the Costa Trasmiera. It's all about fisheries and canning factories here, which is a lot more interesting than it sounds. As long as you like anchovies, that is. Santoña anchovies are bigger and fleshier than most, with a softer texture and a more delicate flavour, and here they're expertly filleted and preserved in olive oil. Considered a delicacy throughout Spain, they are served straight out of the tin at top restaurants and tapas bars. Have a look around the anchovy museum – really – before ordering some at a bar, along with a plate of sardines and a beer. Devour the lot while standing at a high table on the pavement outside, then quaff another beer. You may find yourself ordering more anchovies as well.
By now you should have tuned into the laid-back Costa Trasmiera vibe. All you have to do, at some point, is make your way back to Santander. It only takes about half an hour by car, but you may be tempted to stop at some of the inland villages along the way. This is not an area to rush around, which – if you're doing things properly – you will no doubt have gathered by now.

And, for those who want to chill out, the world's most relaxing city has been revealed in a new study. The research compared 50 cities on spa access, air quality, total number of nature and parks, sunshine hours, happiness and traffic congestion. With a whopping 266 parks and nature reserves - more than any other city on the list - as well as 3054.6 hours of sunshine a year, San Diego, in California, came out on top. Known for its beautiful beaches and great weather, San Diego has everything needed for a summer getaway. It also has a relatively high happiness score compared to other locations on the list. What's more, it's a perfect place for travellers wanting to unwind, with 359 spas and wellness centres to choose from. Overall, San Diego earned a relaxation score of 68.7 out of 100. With a whopping 266 parks and nature reserves - more than any other city on the list - as well as 3054.6 hours of sunshine a year, the US city came out on top Singapore ranked second in the study conducted by Hofaly, and also has plenty parks and nature reserves - 242, to be exact. Visitors are spoilt for choice with 698 wellness centres, too. And there's plenty of sunshine - 2,022 hours - and good air quality, so tourists can be outside without worrying. Singapore also scored the highest for happiness, meaning locals enjoy a good quality of life. Vienna placed third in the study overall, boasting 91 parks and nature reserves, and basking in 2,048 hours of sunshine a year. The Austrian hotspot has one of the best air quality scores on the list, offering some of the cleanest air in Europe. When it comes to relaxing, there's plenty of choice. with 137 spas and wellness centres. The city also has the shortest average traffic time at just 21.5 minutes. Australia placed high in the rankings, with Sydney and Melbourne coming fourth and fifth. Meanwhile, Berlin and Auckland ranked sixth and seventh. In eighth place, was Portland, USA, and Rome came in ninth place. Bringing up the rear was Helsinki, Finland, Madrid and Barcelona - in tenth, eleventh, and twelfth place, respectively.

When Calum Macdonald arrived at the Vietnamese border, he couldn't read the administrative forms in front of him. All he could see was a "kaleidoscopic blinding light". He had just stepped off an overnight bus with his friends from the popular tourist destination of Vang Vieng in Laos. The day before, the group had been staying at a hostel where free whisky and vodka shots were offered to guests. Calum was mixing them with soft drinks. It was only at the border that he suspected something might be wrong with his sight - which he told his friends. Free shots and beer buckets in party town at centre of methanol deaths 'Don't let it be your best friend that dies from methanol poisoning' "I remember having this sort of kaleidoscopic, blinding light in my eyes and to the point at which I couldn't see anything. "[We agreed] it was strange but we thought it was food poisoning and the light I was seeing was some kind of sensitivity," he tells BBC Breakfast. But when they arrived at their destination in Vietnam, it was clear something was seriously wrong. "We were sitting in the hotel room, my friends and I, and I said to them: 'Why are we sitting in the dark? Someone should turn a light on.'" The lights were already on. Calum, 23, is now blind and telling his story for the first time. He was one of several victims of a mass methanol poisoning in Vang Vieng last November. Six people died. Calum knew two of them - Danish girls he had met on a night out. All had been staying at the town's Nana Backpacker Hostel. Calum is now working with the families of three other British people who died following methanol poisoning in South East Asia. They are calling on the Foreign Office to be clearer about the dangers people face when booking holidays in countries where methanol poisoning is a concern. Simone White was one of those people. The day after Calum left Vang Vieng, Simone drank free shots at the hostel. Earlier she'd sent her mum a text message saying this was the best holiday she'd ever been on. Simone was admitted to hospital in the following days and a friend called her mother Sue to inform her of what had happened. Later, she rang again to say Simone was in a coma. Sue booked a flight immediately but, before she could take off, she received another call in the middle of the night from a doctor in Laos who was treating Simone. "[He said] you need to give permission for urgent brain surgery or she's not going to survive… "I flew out the next day knowing she was going through surgery and I expected the worst, to be honest." The 28-year-old died in hospital from methanol poisoning. "It's very hard to come to terms with what's happened," Sue says. "Nothing is going to bring Simone back." Methanol is a type of alcohol commonly found in cleaning products, fuel and antifreeze. It is similar to ethanol, which is used for alcoholic drinks, but is more toxic to humans because of the way it is processed by the body. Alcoholic drinks can become contaminated with methanol if they are manufactured poorly. It is a known problem with cheap spirits in South East Asia where hundreds of people are poisoned each year, according to the charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF). If you consume one of these contaminated drinks and suffer methanol poisoning, symptoms can include dizziness, tiredness, headaches and nausea. For many people it feels similar to a normal hangover, which makes it difficult to know if you have been poisoned or just had a few too many drinks. After 12-48 hours, more serious problems can emerge like seizures and blurry vision. In severe cases, it can lead to total blindness and leave sufferers in a coma. As little as 30ml of methanol can be fatal to humans, says the MSF. If diagnosed within 10-30 hours after consumption, methanol poisoning can be treated successfully with dialysis. Kirsty McKie, 38, died in 2022 but it was not the result of accepting free shots. She had been enjoying drinks at home with a friend ahead of a night out in Bali - the Indonesian island where she had been living and working for eight years. Her friend, Sonia Taylor, said they both felt like they had a particularly bad hangover the next day before Kirsty was taken to hospital for treatment. Sonia had also drunk the contaminated alcohol, but survived. "We had no idea," says Sonia. "That's probably been the hardest part for me, not knowing why you live and somebody else dies… It doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason as to why." On Sumatra, another Indonesian island, Cheznye Emmons died after drinking gin that was later found to contain 66,000 times the legal limit for methanol in drinks. Cheznye's mother Pamela tells the BBC: "I think the worst part about that… [was] just before she started having a fit, when she first arrived at the hospital, she said to her boyfriend: 'I'm really, really scared.' "And that was basically the last time [she spoke]." Calum's advice to tourists is to avoid free drinks and spirits in general. "There are lots of lovely beers in south-east Asia, which I'm sure people would really enjoy." He says learning of the deaths of the two Danish girls he met in Vang Vieng changed his perspective about his blindness. "Part of the way that I [had] dealt with it was to bury my head in the sand… I did really feel like, in many ways, my life wasn't worth living." Calum is now learning to use a cane and hopes to apply for a guide dog soon. He adds: "[The deaths] made me realise that I was very lucky and I felt very grateful that, although I had some difficult consequences, a lot of people did have it worse. "I felt, given that I was lucky enough to survive, I have a bit of a responsibility to try and prevent the same thing from happening to other people." The Foreign Office described methanol poisoning and counterfeit alcohol as a "serious problem in some parts of the world" and said it was working with local authorities and the travel industry to tackle the issue. "We seek to make clear the risks to British people travelling abroad and we raise awareness through our travel advice and Travel Aware campaign." Tourism Laos
