3 years, 14 rounds: Deal clinched hours before start of Sindoor
NEW DELHI: The trade deal with UK may have been under negotiation for three years but the seeds were sown 18 years ago - on June 28, 2007, when India began talks for a Bilateral Trade and Investment Agreement.
It was a day after Tony Blair quit as the UK PM, having done some groundwork for the talks. But it was not until Brexit and India's decision to exit RCEP that talks for a trade deal with the UK actually began.
Having opted out of China-led Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, govt stepped up engagement with developed countries - from the UK and EU to Australia - hoping to open new markets for Indian goods and services.
It meant reviving talks that had been on the backburner, as the Modi govt was reluctant to sign FTAs during its first term.
The UK deal appeared smooth as long as

occupied 10 Downing Street. In April 2022, three months after negotiations began, Johnson set a Diwali deadline. Less than three months later, he stepped down, and the deal went on the backburner as UK grappled with uncertainty.
Several members of Rishi Sunak's cabinet publicly expressed concerns over visa concessions, though discussions were on business visas.
Finally, it was Keir Starmer who decided to go ahead with the deal at a time when pressure from US was mounting. It took three years and 14 rounds of negotiations for the deal to be finalised, hours before the start of
Operation Sindoor

NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar on Saturday said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's presentation on "vote theft" had been well-researched and well-documented, and it is up to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to look into the matter. Addressing a press conference in Nagpur, Pawar admitted that the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi should have been more careful before the elections in Maharashtra. "We should have looked into it earlier and been careful," he said. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has described the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls as an "institutionalised chori" and claimed that the Election Commission was "openly colluding" with the BJP to carry out this "theft" with the objective of taking away the voting rights of the poor. Pawar said Gandhi had made his presentation with detailed proof. "The ECI should look into it," he said. The veteran leader lamented that Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray's seating at a dinner meeting hosted by Rahul Gandhi has become an unnecessary controversy. "There was a PowerPoint presentation. When we watch a movie on screen, we don't sit in front but at the back. Farooq Abdullah and I sat at the back. Similarly, Uddhav Thackeray and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah were also seated at the back to watch the presentation properly," he said. He further stated that the Opposition is yet to decide its stand on the Vice-Presidential election slated for September 9. Pawar also rejected speculations about his faction joining hands with the ruling NCP led by his nephew Ajit Pawar. "We will never align with a BJP-led alliance," he asserted.

BJP spokesperson expelled over criticism of party's 'treatment' of Dhankhar, Satyapal Malik
The Rajasthan unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) expelled state spokesperson Krishna Kumar Janu for six years, citing his public criticism of the party's "treatment" of former governor Satya Pal Malik and ex-vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar. According to party officials, the action followed a disciplinary process initiated in June. BJP state disciplinary committee chairperson Onkar Singh Lakhawat said a show-cause notice had been issued to Janu on June 20, seeking an explanation for his comments. "He failed to justify his actions, and the committee decided to expel him for six years," Lakhawat said. The controversy had risen after a purported video of Janu was widely circulated on social media platforms. In the video, Janu is heard criticising senior BJP leaders over what he described as the "humiliating treatment" of Malik, who had served as the governor of several states and was once the party's national vice-president. Malik died earlier this week after a prolonged illness at the age of 79. Janu also referred to Dhankhar's exit from the post of vice president, noting that both leaders are from the Jat community. Janu questioned MPs, MLAs, and other office bearers from the community working within the BJP, asking how they could be sure similar treatment would not be meted out to them. "Malik's treatment cannot be justified. What the BJP is doing with mass leaders is very sad," he said in the video. Malik attracted a lot of controversy after alleging that he was offered a bribe to clear files of two major projects in Jammu and Kashmir and questioned the BJP-led central government over issues related to farmers and the Pulwama terror attack, among others. Dhankhar, a former governor of West Bengal before becoming the vice president, is also a prominent political figure from Rajasthan. Following his abrupt exit from the VP post citing health reasons, opposition leaders claimed he was "forced" to resign. Party insiders said Janu's remarks were viewed as damaging to the BJP's image and internal discipline. Lakhawat noted that the disciplinary committee considered the matter seriously, especially as the comments came in the run-up to key political activities in the state. The expulsion underscores the BJP's strict stance on public criticism of its leadership, particularly on issues involving senior figures and former office-bearers.

Indias Defence Production Surges To All-Time High Of Rs 1.51 Lakh Crore In FY25: Rajnath Singh
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said the annual defence production has soared to an all-time high of Rs 1,50,590 crore in FY 2024-25. The milestone represents a robust 18 per cent growth over the previous fiscal's output of Rs 1.27 lakh crore, and a staggering 90 per cent increase since FY 2019-20, when the figure was Rs 79,071 crore, the minister informed. Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and other PSUs accounted for nearly 77 per cent of total production, while the private sector contributed 23 per cent. The share of the private sector, which increased from 21 per cent in FY 2023-24 to 23 per cent in FY 2024-25, reflects the sector's growing role in the defence ecosystem of the country. The Minister lauded the collective efforts of the Department of Defence Production and all stakeholders - DPSUs, public sector manufacturers, and the private industry in achieving this landmark. He termed the upward trajectory as a clear indicator of India's strengthening defence industrial base. Both public and private segments of the industry have demonstrated consistent year-on-year growth, attributed to far-reaching policy reforms, enhanced ease of doing business, and a strategic focus on indigenisation over the past decade. The overall production of DPSUs and private sector has increased by 16 per cent and 28 per cent, respectively in FY 2024-25. "This record-setting achievement underscores the growing momentum of the government's push to self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi," according to a Defence Ministry statement. The emphasis to reduce the dependency on imports and create a defence industrial complex that not only caters to India's needs but also strengthens the potential of exports has shown positive results. With sustained policy support, increased private participation, and expanding export capabilities, India's defence production sector is poised for continued acceleration in the years ahead.
