Business-class comfort on low-cost flights soon

Kolkata: Days after Emirates and Thai Vietjet announced four-class and three-class cabin configurations on their respective flights to Dubai and Bangkok, domestic carrier IndiGo Airlines announced a two-class configuration in its cabin on flights to Delhi and Mumbai. At present, Air India offers business class seats on its flights, while Air India Express has business class on select flights to Chennai, Bengaluru, and Jaipur. Travel agents in Kolkata said the introduction of business class on 11 flights to Delhi starting Sept 12 and on three flights to Mumbai from Sept 16 has triggered excitement among flyers. Executives, businessmen, and traders who prefer flying IndiGo because the airline offers the highest frequency on most sectors, said they were willing to pay more for better comfort. "Jet Airways set the benchmark in business class. Kingfisher also had a good product. After the two went bust, there was Vistara and Air India. After the merger, only AI had business class. But since it did not have many flights, passengers had to compromise on flexibility of travel to avail of it. The introduction of business class by IndiGo will make a big difference," said Travel Agents Federation of India national executive committee member Anil Punjabi. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata | Gold Rates Today in Kolkata | Silver Rates Today in Kolkata SpiceJet does have a product called SpiceMax that offers greater legroom and priority check-in, but it is essentially a premium economy offering. While all 11 daily flights that IndiGo operates to Delhi from Kolkata will offer IndiGo Stretch, which includes meals and beverages, higher baggage allowance, and priority check-in, only three out of eight flights will offer business class. "As more aircraft with twin configurations are available, more flights to Mumbai will offer business class," said an official. In addition to Stretch, the airline has a Stretch+ offering that provides an even higher baggage allowance and lower cancellation fee. Travel Agent Association of India chairman (east) Anjani Dhanuka said the business class offering would do well as business class in Air India flights from Kolkata have an average occupancy of 65-70%, with some Delhi and Mumbai-bound flights going full. "At present, people who wanted extra legroom on IndiGo flights used to pay for first row or emergency seats. Those travelling to Delhi or Mumbai will now buy business class seats. There is also a good demand on the Kolkata-Bengaluru sector where IndiGo has 10 flights a day," he said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Barricades installed at RV Road interchange station in Bengaluru to manage rush

Bengaluru: As thousands of commuters throng RV Road interchange after the Yellow Line launch, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has installed barricades on platforms. This is the first time an elevated Metro station in Bengaluru has been fitted with barricades; only platforms of the underground Majestic interchange had them until now. There are large queues daily at RV Road station as passengers board trains to Electronics City or switch to the Green Line. With a daily interchange volume of 30,000-35,000 passengers, crowd management has become a major task for security staff. Despite the longer waiting time, the IT corridor link is witnessing a surge in ridership, helping Namma Metro cross the 10-lakh daily passenger mark. "As part of crowd management, barricades have been installed on RV Road station platforms to streamline passenger boarding. We have deployed adequate security staff to manage the rush. Such barricades were earlier installed only at Majestic interchange," said BL Yeshwanth Chavan, chief PRO of BMRCL. Namma Metro now operates over 95km with 85 stations. None of the stations has platform screen doors, but there is a growing demand for them after several incidents of passengers falling onto tracks and suicide attempts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? Any fall on the tracks could prove fatal as the rail system carries 750V DC power supply for operations of the trains. 4th train on new line by mid-Sept BMRCL plans to induct a fourth trainset on the Yellow Line by mid-Sept. It will take a couple of weeks to assemble the coaches and complete mandatory tests. "After various tests, the new trainset must also undergo trial runs on the mainline. With limited night hours available for trials, it will take 15-20 days to finish all requirements before commencing commercial operations," Chavan said. The additional train is likely to help BMRCL run Yellow Line services at a frequency of 20 minutes. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Inter-State Buses Add To Traffic Misery In City

Nagpur: Even as the debate over the role of private buses in creating traffic congestion continues, a new dimension has been added with inter-state buses now under the scanner. According to local transport operators and traffic officials, buses arriving from other states are causing more chaos on city roads as they lack designated parking spaces and halt for extended periods to pick up passengers. Sources said that a large number of buses from Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat enter the city daily. Unlike Nagpur-based long-distance or inter-city buses, which usually pick up passengers and leave within a short time, these outside operators tend to stay parked on busy roads for hours. "Many of these buses accomodate passengers beyond their seating capacity and wait on the streets for longer hours until they secure extra passengers. This adds to the already heavy traffic burden," said one local operator. The problem is severe on Central Avenue, one of Nagpur's busiest roads. Already congested during peak hours, the stretch regularly sees long queues of inter-state buses parked in tandem, blocking large portions of the road and leaving little space for regular commuters. Interestingly, during police action on Wednesday, the major focus was on Central Avenue where the highest number of actions were taken. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Malaysians don't know about this! iOS Credit Read More Undo "Hyderabad-based buses are comparatively prompt as they pick up and depart quickly. But vehicles from other states are the ones that halt for longer durations," the operator added. Apart from Central Avenue, the buses also use pick-up and drop-off points at Bole Petrol Pump, Ravi Nagar, and Chhatrapati Square. All three locations are critical junctions, and frequent halts by heavy vehicles further compound the traffic jams. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
