KSRTC seeks permits for 31 more routes in and around Mangaluru

Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation's (KSRTC) Mangaluru division has applied to the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), Dakshina Kannada, seeking permits to operate buses on 31 more routes in and around Mangaluru, at an RTA meeting here on Monday. Among the routes that the KSRTC sought permits are 12 single trips from four buses on the Mangaluru State Bank-Moodbidri route via Jyothi, Nanthoor, Vamanjoor, Gurupura, Kaikamba and Ganjimutt. Buses via Padil It has also sought permits to operate buses on six routes passing through 'Kartavya Soudha', the district office complex in Padil. It includes 20 single bus trips on the State Bank-Farangipete route, 14 on the Mangaluru Junction Railway Station – Kodikal route, 10 on the State Bank-Kannagudde, eight each on the Mangaluru-Ulaibettu and the State Bank-Mangaluru Junction Railway Station routes, five on the Mangaluru Junction Railway Station – Adhyapady route, and four on the Kankanady Market – Adhyapady route. KSRTC has also sought a permit for the 10 single trips each by one bus on the Mangaluru KSRTC Bus Stand – Surathkal- Farangipete and Mangaluru KSRTC Bus Stand - Farangipete - Surathkal routes. It has also sought a permit for eight bus trips on the KSRTC Bus Stand – Kateel route via Surathkal, Katipalla, Shibaroor and Kinnigoli. Increased demand Seeking permits during the meeting, KSRTC Mangaluru Senior Divisional Manager (SDM) Rajesh Shetty said since the launch of the Shakti scheme, there was demand by people for more services of KSRTC on city routes. Though the notification issued by the Deputy Commissioner in 1996 restricting the entry of buses to Hampankatta does not apply to their plea, the RTA should exempt KSRTC from the notification and grant permits. 'We are here to serve people. The private city bus operators cannot oppose the grant of permits [for KSRTC],' Mr. Shetty said. Advocates representing the Canara Bus Operators Association and Dakshina Kannada Bus Operators Association submitted their objections and sought time to file a detailed response. The meeting was chaired by Deputy Commissioner H.V. Darshan, who heads the authority. Superintendent of Police K. Arun and Senior Regional Transport Officer and Deputy Commissioner of Transport, Shridhar K. Mallad, were present.

AI-enabled railway maintenance advances Dubai's model for operational innovation

Advt Advt The Automated Railway Infrastructure Inspection System (ARIIS), implemented by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), constitutes a practical model for employing the latest artificial intelligence technologies in the transport sector. It aims to enhance the efficiency of operational maintenance and improve safety standards, while reducing reliance on traditional inspections that previously consumed significant time and innovative technology marks a significant advancement in Dubai Metro 's operational maintenance, aligning with Dubai's vision to be a global leader in Artificial Intelligence and sustainable infrastructure . ARIIS, a sophisticated robotic platform equipped with state-of-the-art sensors, lasers, and 3D cameras, autonomously inspects rail tracks, and critical infrastructure without interrupting metro operations. This solution underscores Dubai Metro's commitment to enhancing safety, efficiency, and reliability through pioneering smart groundbreaking AI-driven robotic inspection solution enables the application of proactive maintenance strategies through advanced diagnostic technologies, helping to extend the lifespan of infrastructure and reduce periodic maintenance costs by up to 25 per cent. Real-time data analytics also support precise and well-informed maintenance decisions, enhancing resource management efficiency by 40 per cent and minimizing unnecessary its implementation, the ARIIS has succeeded in reducing the time required for periodic inspections by 75 per cent, equivalent to saving nearly 1,700 human working hours, and cutting traditional inspection operations by up to 70 per cent. It has also improved infrastructure condition assessment capabilities by 40 per cent, accelerating maintenance procedures, reducing emergency interventions, and enhancing the overall reliability of the metro RTA noted that the system is currently being phased in across select metro lines, with a comprehensive plan to roll it out across all routes following successful technical and operational Authority also revealed that it is studying the possibility of extending ARIIS-or similar technologies-to other modes of transport, such as the tram, depending on the nature of their infrastructure and operational system collects comprehensive data covering rail conditions, cracks, wear and tear, and deviations, which are then analysed using artificial intelligence algorithms to support data-driven predictive maintenance. This approach enhances infrastructure sustainability and extends its service inspections are carried out in line with the highest occupational safety standards, coordinated with the control centre, and scheduled during nightly maintenance windows to minimize impact on metro operations and passenger services. Thanks to the smart technology, inspections have become faster and more accurate, eliminating the need to suspend or delay services.

Mangaladevi Bus Terminal finally ready for use

Mangaluru: The Mangaladevi Bus Terminal, which was inaugurated twice by BJP and Congress representatives in Feb and remained idle for nearly six months, will soon be made operational. No buses to Mangaladevi were operating from the new bus terminal ever since it was inaugurated twice in Feb. After holding discussions with bus operators and other stakeholders, Mangaluru RTO Shridhar K Mallad decided that all buses to Mangaladevi should operate from the new bus terminal. He said the decision will be finalised at a meeting of the Road Transport Authority (RTA) to be chaired by deputy commissioner Darshan HV on Aug 18. He said that buses on the route will start entering the bus bay developed by the Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) once the RTA finalises the proposal. At a Transport Adalat organised by the RTO recently, the issue of the unused bus terminal at Mangaladevi was raised by the public. In fact, various projects, costing a total of Rs 5.9 crore, including a PHC, a veterinary hospital, and a bus bay measuring 110m in length and 11m in width, with a 4m wide footpath, were constructed by the MSCL. A foundation stone laying ceremony for the bus terminal and other projects at Mangaladevi ward was held under the leadership of Premananda Shetty during his tenure as mayor in 2021. Shetty said he also held discussions with MCC commissioner Ravichandra Naik and the RTO to put the bus terminal at Mangaladevi into use. It may be recalled that minister Rao inaugurated the projects, including a PHC, a veterinary hospital, a municipal staff complex, park, and the new bus terminal in Mangaladevi ward on Feb 15. Previously, the same facilities were inaugurated by the then mayor Manoj Kumar, Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta, and Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath, on Feb 9. However, the bus terminal was not yet made operational. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
