Smuggling attempt of pangolins, giant clams foiled

KUDAT: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency has foiled a smuggling attempt of pangolins and giant clams to a neighbouring country.
The agency seized five boxes containing frozen pangolins with an estimated weight of 100kg, 20 boxes containing frozen giant clams weighing about 500kg, as well as eight sacks of dried giant clams weighing more than 200kg.
Kudat Maritime zone director, maritime commander Hasbullah Omar, said a tip-off indicated suspicious activity off Malawali Strait.
"Acting on the tip-off, Patrol Boat KILAT 48 was dispatched to the location and detected an unlit boat about 1.8 nautical miles northwest of Tanjung Layang-layang, Pitas.
"Upon inspection, there were no individuals on the boat, but further search revealed shocking items," he said in a statement, adding the raid was around 2am yesterday.
The boat and its valuable cargo, estimated to be worth over RM100,000, were seized and brought to the Kudat Marina Jetty for further investigation.
The case is being investigated under the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997 and the Fisheries Act 1985 for attempting to smuggle endangered animal species and handling marine products without valid authorisation.
It is understood that all seized items were believed to be intended for a neighboring country with a high demand for exotic food and prohibited wildlife products.
In Sabah, the pangolin (Manis javanica) is a "totally protected" species under the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997.
It is also listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
In 2019, Sabah recorded the largest pangolin bust involving the seizure of 30 tonnes of pangolins and pangolin products. It is learnt that this case has yet to have any legal action.
Pangolin poaching and illegal trade can lead to a fine of up to RM250,000 and a jail term of up to five years, or both.
Giant clams are ecologically important for coral reef ecosystems, playing roles as reef builders, habitat providers, and water filterers.

Bodies of missing couple Tanjung Harapan boat accident recovered
A TRAGIC boat accident off Tanjung Harapan, Port Klang, has claimed five lives, including a married couple whose bodies were found drowned near North Port early this morning. The incident, which occurred during a test drive of the boat, involved six people. Three died at the scene, one survived, and two were initially missing. NFA in Teoh Beng Hock case: DAP seeks clarification from A-G
KUALA LUMPUR: DAP has called on Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar to provide a detailed explanation for his decision not to pursue criminal charges in the case involving the death of political aide Teoh Beng Hock. In a joint statement issued by DAP national chairman Gobind Singh Deo and secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook, the party expressed disappointment over the Attorney-General's decision to classify the case as "no further action" (NFA), despite previous court rulings that pointed to foul play. "The Attorney-General must explain why he believes there is insufficient evidence to prosecute anyone for Teoh Beng Hock's death, especially in light of the findings of the Court of Appeal and civil proceedings," the statement read. According to DAP, the case was referred to the Attorney-General by police on May 21 and was subsequently classified as NFA. A letter dated May 30 was later sent to the family's legal representatives, stating that the investigations did not uncover sufficient evidence to support a criminal prosecution. Teoh, who was a political aide to a Selangor state executive councillor, died in 2009 while in the custody of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). "DAP has been consistently calling for accountability in the case. "The party previously assembled a legal team that initiated an inquest into Teoh's death, which revealed bruising on his neck. "However, the 2011 Coroner's Court returned an open verdict." Subsequent legal challenges saw the Court of Appeal overturn the Coroner's decision, concluding in 2014 that Teoh's death resulted from "an unlawful act or acts of persons unknown, inclusive of MACC officers who were involved in the arrest and investigation." In a related civil suit, the government and MACC admitted liability for negligence, resulting in a RM600,000 settlement to Teoh's family, along with RM60,000 in costs. "These court decisions form a solid basis for further investigation to identify those responsible for Teoh Beng Hock's death. "Whilst the duty to investigate the case and to identify those responsible lies with the police, it is for the Attorney-General to decide his next step based on that investigation," the statement added. The party also voiced its support for the family's reported move to challenge the NFA decision via a judicial review. "We call upon the Attorney-General to reconsider his decision and move forward with pressing charges against those responsible, without further delay."

Fisherman mourns family lost in Port Klang boat capsize
SHAH ALAM: A relative of three family members who died in Friday's boat capsize off Tanjung Harapan, Port Klang, is struggling to come to terms with the tragedy. Gan Leong Seong said he rushed to the scene after learning that his relatives had not returned from the short boat outing. Gan, a fisherman, had just finished setting up nets about 1km from the site when he received a call from a relative. "After finishing work, I was on my way home when the eldest brother of the deceased called to say the group hadn't returned after taking the boat out," he said outside the Shah Alam Hospital Forensics Unit today. "I immediately turned back and, upon arrival, found that the boat had already capsized." Gan said he dived twice in dark and dangerous conditions before finding the body of his grandnephew in the front cabin area of the overturned boat. "I started searching underneath the boat after it was towed to the Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency jetty. "The first attempt failed, but when my brother jumped in and found one of the victims' legs, I immediately dived back in without thinking twice. "The smell of fuel was strong and it was hard to breathe. But when I saw Darren, I gathered the courage to quickly retrieve him," he said, referring to one of the victims, Darren Gan, 3. Gan said he last saw the family during Chinese New Year celebrations earlier this year. He added that he and his brother, Gan Hon Tat — one of the victims whose body was found this morning — ran a fishing tackle shop and had only started the business a year ago. "The couple got married four years ago and had one son. It's heartbreaking to lose them all at once." The 4.30pm incident on Friday claimed five lives after their boat capsized 0.3 nautical miles off Tanjung Harapan. A 17-year-old survived. Darren, Cheu Soon Hin, 50, and Fong Yong Sen, 29, were found inside the capsized boat. Darren's parents, Hon Tat and Careen Man, were initially reported missing before their bodies were recovered separately at 7.42am today, about 0.1 nautical miles from the National Hydrographic Centre, Port Klang.
