MP urges railway minister to introduce Vande Bharat Sleeper Express on M'luru-B'luru route
Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta appealed to Union minister for Railways to consider introducing the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express between Mangaluru and Bengaluru. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The MP met the minister in New Delhi on Wednesday and said that the upcoming Vande Bharat sleeper variant, set to be launched in Sept 2025, marks yet another milestone in providing world-class rail travel to the common citizen. The Mangaluru and Bengaluru line is one of the most important intra-state corridors in Karnataka, connecting the coastal city of Mangaluru with the state capital. The route sees consistently high passenger demand from students, working professionals, tourists, and traders alike. Currently, only a handful of overnight trains serve the busy route, and they are often fully booked well in advance. A Vande Bharat sleeper service would offer faster, safer, and more comfortable overnight travel, significantly improving connectivity and passenger experience, he said. He appealed to the minister to include the Mangaluru-Bengaluru route among the priority corridors for the Vande Bharat sleeper express and direct the concerned officials to explore the operational and technical feasibility of the same. He discussed key rail infrastructure projects of the region, including the Hassan-Mangalore Railway Line Electrification, after which they look forward to a Mangaluru - Bengaluru Vande Bharat sleeper train.

Centre flags misuse of agriculture urea in AP
Vijayawada: The Union Govt has raised serious concerns over the rising use of agriculture-grade urea in several states, including Andhra Pradesh, amid suspicions of diversion for non-agricultural and industrial purposes. Responding to directives from the Union agriculture secretary and cabinet secretary, the Andhra Pradesh agriculture department is preparing to issue strict guidelines to curb misuse. Director of agriculture Dilli Rao said the Centre observed a sharp increase in urea usage during the current Kharif season — 3.88 lakh metric tonnes compared to 3 lakh metric tonnes last year — an excess of 88,000 metric tonnes. Urea, intended solely for crop cultivation, is reportedly being diverted for use in industries such as plywood, varnish, paint, AdBlue solution, beer, illicit liquor manufacturing, aquaculture, poultry and animal feed. Some of it is allegedly smuggled across borders into neighbouring states. In Andhra Pradesh, several districts — including NTR, Eluru, Palnadu, Kurnool, Anantapur, Sri Sathya Sai, Chittoor, Tirupati, ASR, Manyam, Visakhapatnam, and Srikakulam — share borders with Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh, raising the risk of cross-border transportation. A high-level meeting, led by the chief secretary, will soon finalise enforcement strategies. Coordination with the transport department is also being planned to monitor movement across state lines. Dilli Rao added that district-level meetings will follow, involving district collectors, joint collectors and industrial stakeholders. Sales data will be scrutinised to identify unusual buying patterns.

The government had said that the decision was going to benefit more than 5.50 lakh domestic consumers by waiving off an amount of ₹937.34 crore, accumulated as surcharge or interest, on account of non-payment of timely only had to pay their principal amounts. However, in May 2024, the scheme was extended till March 2025 as not many consumers had come forward to avail the scheme. As many as 13,985 domestic consumers had availed the scheme for waiver on late payment surcharge with KDPCL collecting revenue of ₹12.41 crore till May 22, 2024. A government spokesperson said that domestic consumers can clear their electricity bills by paying only the principal amount, while the interest accrued upto March 31, 2025, shall be completely waived. The consumers who pay their principal amount will get a full waiver on interest. 'The scheme is applicable to all domestic electricity consumers with pending bills as of March 31, 2025. This is the final amnesty scheme for domestic users approved in the furtherance to the announcement made by the J&K chief minister,' said the spokesperson. To avail the benefits of this scheme, the consumers have to pay the outstanding dues by March 31, 2026, in equal instalments and must also pay their current bills regularly without failure.
