Missed Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe in Broadway's Merrily We Roll Along? It's coming to movie theaters this fall

We may never see Richard Linklater's film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical Merrily We Roll Along —starring Ben Platt, Beanie Feldstein and Paul Mescal, the movie, shot in real time to mirror the passing of 30 years in the story, isn't set to finish shooting until 2039. But luckily, another, equally star-studded version of the classic musical is coming to theaters later this year.
A live capture of the Tony-winning Broadway revival of Merrily We Roll Along will premiere in movie theaters on December 5, an early holiday gift for theater lovers and Sondheim fans courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics and Fathom Entertainment. Directed by Maria Friedman and starring Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe and Lindsay Mendez, the production follows three best friends from the end of their decades-long friendship to its very beginnings, as they grapple with fame, success and thwarted romance. George Furth wrote the musical's book, an adaptation of a Moss Hart-George S. Kaufman play.
Merrily We Roll Along opened on Broadway on October 10, 2023, and closed July 7, 2024, after extending its run.
'This is a show that makes demands of its audience, perhaps sometimes unreasonable ones,' Time Out New York's Adam Feldman wrote in his five-star review. 'But as Charley sings during a loving argument with his friends: 'What's the point of demands you can meet?' Friedman's production meets the audience halfway, and a Broadway audience today just might be able to make up the difference as it couldn't in 1981. Cross your fingers: It might finally be Merrily's time.'
Reviving an infamous flop that ran for just 16 performances in its first Broadway incarnation, this Merrily We Roll Along set box office records after transferring from Off-Broadway to the Hudson Theater, winning Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical, Best Orchestrations for Jonathan Tunick, Leading Actor in a Musical for Groff and Featured Actor in a Musical for Radcliffe. The score boasts some of Sondheim's most-loved songs, including 'Not a Day Goes By,' 'Old Friends,' and 'Good Thing Going.' The cast also includes Krystal Joy Brown, Katie Rose Clarke, and Reg Rogers.

Here's what it's like to see Kelly Clarkson's Studio Sessions residency in Las Vegas

One set. Two outfits. And a whole lot of soul. Albeit a week later than originally planned, Kelly Clarkson recently kicked off her Studio Sessions residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace with a stripped down show that focuses more on the charismatic singer's voice than the over-the-top frills Las Vegas residencies are known for. If Clarkson was battling voice issues or illness, there was no evidence of it on opening night. She brilliantly belted out song after song with force and engaged with the audience with stories throughout the over two-hour performance. The Studio Sessions stage replicates a recording studio. It's a simple set that remains in place for the duration of the show. Clarkson says it's inspired by what her 'party barn' in Montana looks like. Framed photos of artists she idolizes are tacked onto the studio walls: Bonnie Raitt, Reba McEntire, Steven Tyler, Lauryn Hill, Janis Joplin and, of course, Dolly Parton (who will perform six shows on the very same stage this December). 'All these people are big musical influences for me,' she told fans on opening night. 'This is literally my shit on these walls. That's my Dolly,' she said, pointing to the photo of Parton hanging on the wall. Clarkson dressed for comfort and arrived 'in studio' wearing bell bottom jeans and a sparkly sequined Stevie Nicks T-shirt, which she sported until her encore. After opening the show with stirring renditions of 'Me' and 'Walk Away,' Clarkson dug deep and sang 'Heat,' a single she said 'feels like a modern day Tina Turner song' before breaking into a Bowie-esque version of 'Dance with Me.' Not surprisingly, Clarkson is a bit of a gabber. The multiple Emmy Award-winning talk show host spoke often to praise her band—a large ensemble with a string and horn section, backup singers and other musicians—as well as to talk about the set (the furniture is available on Wayfair) and how this residency was all about giving fans a glimpse into the fun associated with recording. 'We gave you a sneak peek of what we do. There's nothing like getting into studios with a bunch of musicians and vibing with each other. It's electric,' Clarkson said. 'This is my favorite show I've ever put together, because I love being in the studio and that's where this whole idea came from.' I heard some folks criticize her opening night performance for singing a couple songs with her back turned to the audience seated stage left. It was a detail I didn't initially notice because she was facing me the whole time. She also remained center stage the entire show so those in the front rows didn't get the up-close experience they may have expected. Both are easily correctable, though. Clarkson's only costume change came at the very end of the show when she ditched the jeans and returned in a white gown to perform her final three songs of the evening, which concluded with her hit song 'Since U Been Gone.' 'Damn right I'm going to sing this song in this dress!' she told the audience. When and where is Clarkson performing Studio Sessions? When: July 25, 26; Aug 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16; Nov 7, 8, 14, 15 Where: The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas What's on the Studio Sessions setlist? The setlist for Clarkson's Studio Sessions Vegas residency includes 19 songs that span her career and a few bonuses during the encore. – 'Me' – 'Walk Away' – 'Heat' – 'Dance With Me' – 'Behind These Hazel Eyes' – 'Heartbeat Song' – 'Breakaway' – 'Didn't I' – 'Because of You' – 'Mine' – 'Catch My Breath' – 'Beautiful Disaster' – 'Piece by Piece' – 'Miss Independent' – 'Sober' – 'Favorite Kind of High' – 'My Life Would Suck Without You' – 'Tightrope' – 'Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)' Encore Her encore includes one Kellyoke cover song that will rotate. On the first weekend she sang Dolly Parton's 'I Will Always Love You' opening night and on night two, she sang Måneskin's version of Frankie Vallie & the Four Seasons' 'Beggin.' – 'Where Have You Been' – Kellyoke cover – 'Since U Been Gone'

TV star Billy Porter blasted over 'replaced the Jews' line while promoting new musical

Award-winning actor Billy Porter has sparked controversy during a recent appearance on CBS Mornings, where he remarked that 'black people have replaced the Jews' while discussing his new leading role on Broadway. The 55-year-old actor and singer appeared on the network's morning segment on Monday to promote his role as the Emcee in the Broadway revival of the 1966 musical Cabaret. Cabaret is a dark, provocative classic set in 1930s Berlin that explores the fate of a seedy nightclub and its patrons as the shadow of Nazism begins to fall over the city. However, for the first time, this new revival will feature three Black actors in its leading roles - a historic casting choice Porter confirmed on Monday. 'This is the first time in the 60-year history that all three of those characters have been African-American in a commercial production,' he said. 'And with what's going on in the world right now, black people have replaced the Jews in this sort of configuration of what we're going through.' His comment quickly sparked a wave of backlash across the internet, including from Broadway influencer Ben Lebofsky, who has a significant following on TikTok. Lebofsky, who has 23.2K followers under the handle @broadwayben, posted a video on Tuesday accusing Porter of downplaying antisemitism. Specifically, the influencer argued that Porter's remark implied that 'Jews no longer face discrimination,' a statement that ignited significant concern and debate among viewers who felt it overlooked the persistence of anti-Jewish prejudice. 'As we all know, antisemitism is alive and well, and to me, it feels like Billy's comments here is dismissing,' Lebofsky said in the video. 'Which becomes even more problematic when you consider that he is about to step into a musical that is first and foremost about Jewish trauma,' he added. Though Lebofsky took issue with Porter's wording, he also recognized that the parallels drawn between the experiences of Jewish and black Americans are not without merit - reflecting complex and shared histories of oppression. 'I think what he is trying to say is that, in today's day and age, black people face a lot of discrimination, and you can draw a lot of parallels to the discrimination that black people face and the discrimination that Jewish people face, which I think is a true statement,' Lebofsky added. The comments beneath Lebofsky's video largely echoed his concerns, with many viewers expressing anger and frustration over Porter's remarks. 'Not to mention the huge population of black Jews he is just ignoring. Jewish doesn't equal white,' one comment read. A second added: 'Genuinely what would possess him to say that while playing the Emcee.' Often seen as the symbolic heart of Cabaret, the Emcee (right) embodies the seductive excess and creeping decay of Weimar-era Berlin - ultimately offering a haunting mirror to an unraveling society as the Nazi regime rises to power 'It's like you can hear the exact moment that the Cabaret PR team started to have a panic attack,' another viewer wrote. A fourth concurred, accompanied by a sad-face emoji: 'Clearly Billy Porter doesn't know the plot of Cabaret.' 'Billy has always played the Oppression Olympics. The only pain he's interested in discussing is his own,' wrote another. The latest revival of Cabaret debuted last year with Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne captivating audiences as the Emcee. Now, Billy Porter will step into the spotlight, bringing his own bold interpretation to the iconic role as the production heads toward its final curtain this October. Porter's role as the Emcee - the flamboyant, enigmatic master of ceremonies at the Kit Kat Club, where much of the story unfolds - places him at the center of the musical's unsettling world. Often seen as the symbolic heart of Cabaret, the Emcee embodies the seductive excess and creeping decay of Weimar-era Berlin - ultimately offering a haunting mirror to an unraveling society as the Nazi regime rises to power. Back in April, Porter participated in a photo project titled Borrowed Spotlight, which paired Holocaust survivors with prominent celebrities to amplify their stories and ensure their experiences continue to be seen and heard. 'I was honored to meet fellow New Yorker Bella Rosenberg for a photoshoot with @brycethompson and the @borrowedspotlight project,' Porter wrote in an Instagram post regarding his experience.

Kia Joorabchian removes several horses including ‘spectacular' £4.6million Frankel filly from Ralph Beckett yard

They're going to AMO's No1 trainer instead THEY'RE OFF Kia Joorabchian removes several horses including 'spectacular' £4.6million Frankel filly from Ralph Beckett yard Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) KIA JOORABCHIAN has moved several horses away from Ralph Beckett — including the unraced £4.6million Frankel filly named Partying. The AMO Racing chief has shipped a number of his string from Kimpton Down Stables to Freemason Lodge where his new trainer Kevin Philippart De Foy has recently moved. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 New AMO Racing trainer Kevin Philippart de Foy has taken delivery of a number of former Ralph Beckett-trained horses, including a record-setting £4.6million Frankel filly Credit: PA It is the second high-profile move to take place in the sport in a few days after a number of horses, including serial Cheltenham winner Ginny's Destiny, left Paul Nicholls for arch rival Nicky Henderson. Joorabchian has left former Irish Oaks heroine You Got To Me with Beckett for now, but has moved on the majority of his horses previously with the Arc-winning handler. De Foy sent out his first runners since his switch to Freemason at Leicester on Wednesday and has also recently received Ghostwriter, who was with Clive Cox. The £2m purchase was red-hot favourite for the Princess Of Wales's Stakes at the Newmarket July meeting earlier this month. But had to be withdrawn after rearing over when being saddled ahead of the 1m4f Group 2 won by Charlie Appleby's El Cordobes. The Belgian trainer recently issued an update on the four-year-old colt, saying: "Everything is fine with Ghostwriter and hopefully he'll be back soon." But it is Partying who is real headline-grabber. She was the most expensive yearling sold in the northern hemisphere last year and is out of the Royal Ascot-winning Shamardal mare Aljazzi. Joorabchian's right-hand man Alex Elliott helped strike the decisive blow at the Tattersalls Book 1 sale last October. And he said at the time: "She's a Frankel filly with that kind of physique from that kind of family. "We've seen Ylang Ylang from the same farm on the same Shamardal cross – we just need history to repeat itself! "I keep saying to people horses will pay you back. "It was a good bit more than we thought we'd have to pay but when Kia and his partners decided that they wanted the filly, they wanted the filly. "She is a spectacular filly, it is a spectacular price, and there's a spectacular bunch of horses here. "I'd like to say I was a cool customer when all that was taking place, but that would be a fib – I have never been in that rarified atmosphere before." De Foy moved to the now-retired Sir Michael Stoute's former base recently after being appointed AMO No1. Speaking of his decision to take on the trainer, who he called a 'perfect fit', football superagent Joorabchian said: "Kevin is a fantastic horseman who understands our goals and shares our ambition. "Having known and worked with him for several years, it makes this transition even smoother. "We know his character fits and our ideas align perfectly. "We believe he's the right person to take the operation to the next level, and we're excited about what's ahead with him leading the team at this historic yard." While De Foy added: "I am deeply honoured to have been entrusted with the responsibility of taking over at Freemason Lodge and training such an exciting string of horses for Amo Racing. "This is a major milestone in my career, and I'm incredibly grateful to Kia and the team for the opportunity. "Amo Racing's investment and ambition in the sport are truly inspiring, and I look forward to playing my part in what I hope will be a very successful journey together."
