KUDAT: A quick response by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) here saved the life of a 14-year-old girl suffering from breathing difficulties on Banggi Island on Wednesday night. The girl, Anisa Aman Shah, was initially treated at Karakit Health Clinic but required urgent transfer to Kudat Hospital due to her worsening condition. MMEA Kudat Maritime Zone Director, Commander Hasbullah Omar, said a medical evacuation (Medevac) mission was launched immediately after receiving a call from the clinic's medical officer. Cenderawasih 10 was deployed to transport the patient, accompanied by her father and a Health Ministry staff, from Karakit Jetty to Marina Jetty in Kudat. He said the ministry is committed to resolving the filling of 4,352 positions to meet the healthcare needs of the people, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today. 'We are aware that the shortage of personnel is a real issue and must be addressed. I am personally committed to expediting the appointment process for those currently on contract to be absorbed into permanent positions without having to wait by cohort. 'We are identifying ways to reduce this deficit or close the gap, and to implement redistribution or resolve the long-standing issue of maldistribution. I have inherited this situation, but I am determined to address it within a reasonable timeframe,' he said. He was speaking to reporters after attending the Community Engagement Day event at the National Information Dissemination Centre in Kampung Langkuas, Kinarut, near here today. Also present were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Ministry of Communications Secretary-General Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, and MOH Secretary-General Datuk Seri Suriani Ahmad. When announcing government initiatives for Malaysians today, the Prime Minister said the government would expedite the filling of 4,352 positions at healthcare facilities, including the appointment of contract doctors this year, in response to urgent needs in the country's healthcare sector. However, Dzulkefly clarified that the responsibility for position appointments does not lie with the ministry, but rather under the jurisdiction of the Public Service Department (JPA) and Public Services Commission (SPA), though he is confident these agencies are committed to fulfilling the staffing needs of the health sector. Tawau has strong medical tourism potential: Nizam

Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, said Tawau could serve not only as a gateway for trade and investment but also as a promising destination for medical tourism. 'We are in a position to offer high-quality medical treatment at competitive costs, which in turn can stimulate the local economy,' he told reporters after officiating the launch of the Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) Services at KMI Tawau Medical Centre on Saturday. The event also saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between KMI Tawau Medical Centre and Rusleeya Healthcare Sdn. Bhd. The MoU was signed by KMI Tawau General Manager Zainulalim Samsudin and Rusleeya Healthcare Medical Director Dr Rusli Rolon. The services under the partnership will include comprehensive health screenings for workers and compliance with occupational safety and health regulations in Malaysia. Nizam said the strategic collaboration between the two companies is expected to strengthen the occupational health sector and pave the way for expanding medical tourism in the region. 'In addition to improving the quality of healthcare for local workers, we believe there is great potential to attract international patients, especially from Kalimantan and other parts of Southeast Asia,' he said. He said the partnership combines the expertise of both organisations and could serve as a high-impact model of private sector collaboration in providing inclusive, modern, and tourism-oriented healthcare services. ‘Enhance safety in scuba diving' call

'The ocean is a treasure we are blessed with but it also comes with responsibilities, especially when ensuring the safety of those who explore its depths,' said the Ministry's Permanent Secretary Datuk Josie Lai during a Safety Medical Talk organised by the Sabah Dive Squad Club at Universiti Malaysia Sabah. The event, co-organised with UMS and the Borneo Marine Research Institute, brought together 100 representatives from various agencies including the Maritime Police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Fire and Rescue Department, and Royal Malaysian Navy. The talk featured presentations on first aid and dive-related medical emergencies by scuba diving medical adviser Lt Col (Dr) Eugene Tan Choon Li, technical diving adviser First Warrant Officer Almudi Eskal and marine conservationist Monica Chin. The Ministry also shared its standard operating procedures for scuba diving activities. Meanwhile, Club president Sim Fui acknowledged that recent diving incidents in Sabah have highlighted the dangers that can occur at any depth, from underwater separations to medical emergencies.
