Vaalies excel in demanding 2025 Vasco Yacht Race!

The Citizen27-05-2025
On May 25, a determined team of five sailors from the Vaal Triangle embarked on the annual Vasco da Gama Yacht Race, navigating the challenging 280 nautical mile (518km) stretch from Durban to East London. Skipper-owner Herbert Karolius, co-owner Rex Anderson, and crew members Jakes Opperman, Roy Downes, and Sarie van den Berg showcased exceptional skill and endurance, crossing the finish line in 29h51m – a mere 16 minutes behind the winner, CFM II.
The Vaal Triangle team, who won the race in 2017 and finished second in 2022, demonstrated remarkable consistency by claiming the runner-up position once again. The team's achievement is a testament to their dedication and teamwork. Congratulations to Herbert, Rex, Jakes, Roy and Sarie, who represented the Vaal Region in such a remarkable way. Notably, Trevor Hulleman, another Vaalie, was part of the winning yacht CFM II's crew.
The Vasco Da Gama Yacht Race, named after the famous Portuguese explorer, has a rich history dating back to 1971. This grueling offshore sailing event tests participants' seamanship, strategy, and physical endurance as they navigate varying weather conditions and ocean currents. With its enduring spirit of adventure and competition, the race remains a highlight of the South African sailing calendar, drawing participants from far and wide.

Miguel Cardoso: Arthur Sales not a replacement for Lucas Ribeiro at Mamelodi Sundowns

AmaZulu's Ben Motshwari and Mamelodi Sundowns' Arthur Sales fight for the ball during their Betway Premiership match. Image: Backpagepix Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso believes Arthur Sales is a very good player who will be key to the club's success — but he was quick to dispel any suggestion that the lanky forward is a direct replacement for his Brazilian compatriot Lucas Ribeiro. The Portuguese coach essentially confirmed speculation that Ribeiro will be leaving the club while speaking to the media during the post-match press conference following their 2-0 Betway Premiership victory over AmaZulu on Tuesday night. Ribeiro — the standout performer of last season and winner of both the Footballer of the Year and Players' Player of the Year awards, as well as the Golden Boot for the 2024/25 campaign — is believed to be heading to Qatar. Sales played on the right-hand side, the very position where Ribeiro previously shone. But Cardoso was quick to play down any expectations or pressure being placed on the younger Brazilian. 'It's important that we understand one thing,' he said. Video Player is loading. First of all, people should look at him as himself and not imagine that, now he's playing on the right, they'll see Lucas Ribeiro. 'There's no one who is going to be Lucas Ribeiro, and the coach is not looking for someone to be Lucas Ribeiro on the right — because that doesn't exist.' If ever there was confirmation that the attacker — who also won the award for Best Goal at the FIFA Club World Cup in the USA — is on his way out of Chloorkop, this was surely it. 'Lucas is Lucas, and Arthur is Arthur. Each player has his own characteristics. Arthur is a very good player who arrived in South Africa and wasn't given the attention and credit he deserves. 'Now, gradually, people are starting to understand. And if you look at the numbers — how he impacted the team last year — you'll realise that whenever he came onto the pitch, he was always contributing goals and assists. He was already important last year with the goals he scored.'

Battle for glory, redemption, European places and surviving relegation — English Premier League returns

Will Liverpool retain their league title? Can Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur pick up the pieces after disappointing last season? Can the newly promoted teams survive relegation? These are some of the prominent sub-themes in the new Premier League season. After a three-month hiatus the world's most popular league is finally back. The 2025/26 season kicks off on 16 August, with reigning champions Liverpool clashing with Bournemouth. As far as opening fixtures are concerned, it's a fair one for the Reds. Arne Slot's men are hoping to begin their title defence with the same intensity that marked their march to last season's crown, when they won three matches on the spin to lay down the gauntlet to rivals. The team that came closest to even mounting some sort of challenge as Liverpool did their best Eliud Kipchoge impression was Arsenal. The Gunners eventually finished a disappointing 10 points behind the English champions, but even that was due to Liverpool slowing down towards the finish line. Gunners' time? Arsenal's young but mature team is chasing the club's first league title in more than two decades. Victory in their opening match – against Manchester United – will send a major message about the progress of the process that Arsenal fans have trusted since Mikel Arteta's appointment as manager in 2019. The process has seen the Gunners finish in second place three times in the past three years. The first two times it was said that the team was still young and inexperienced when it came to competing for league honours. Last season, Arteta's men would have jumped to the top of a number of people's lists of league contenders when Manchester City crumbled after dominating the Premier League for four successive seasons. Instead, it was Slot's Liverpool that raced to a second national title in the Premier League era. It feels like this season will be extremely important for Arteta's future. His team has matured, but it still possesses a number of young yet battle-hardened players. Smart acquisitions such as midfielder Martín Zubimendi and Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres have added another dimension to the Gunners. This has piled more pressure on Arteta to finally succeed. 'Well, it's certain he's going to add a different kind of threat and options to score goals from a situation that before we didn't have the opportunity to do so. So, he's a real value there for us,' Arteta said of Gyökeres. Redemption for Red Devils Of course, they begin their league campaign against a Red Devils team coming off their worst Premier League season in history. United lost 18 of their 38 league matches in 2024/25, eventually ending the campaign three places above the relegation zone with just 42 points. Redemption is on Ruben Amorim's mind after his horrific start to life in Manchester. The Portuguese manager replaced Erik ten Hag after the Dutchman was dismissed in October 2024 following a poor start. Things did not improve under Amorim, culminating in the aforementioned conclusion to the Red Devils' campaign. The United hierarchy – which moved brutally last season, cutting hundreds of jobs as part of a financial restructure – has backed Amorim in the current transfer window. This is particularly true on the attacking front, where the Manchester club has signed Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo and Brazilian Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Slovenian striker Benjamin Šeško has joined from RB Leipzig. These additions have pleased Amorim as he looks to resurrect a fallen soccer giant. '[A selection headache] is a good thing. It is supposed to be like that, not like last season that we have to struggle to put 11 players on the pitch. This is the normal thing. So, I need to think and they [the players] need to fight during the week,' Amorim said of the competition for places. 'Things are getting better. But in the end, we need to win games,' the 40-year-old added. What better platform to announce this serious intent than with a convincing victory over the Gunners on Sunday, 17 August? Especially since all eyes will be on this fixture as the marquee match of round one, season 34. Frankly spurred on Despite winning their first trophy in 17 years with a Europa League victory last season, Tottenham Hotspur suffered even more than United in the Premier League. Finishing one place above relegation forced Spurs chairperson Daniel Levy to sack manager Ange Postecoglou. Postecoglou has been replaced by Danish tactician Thomas Frank (51), who transformed Brentford into one of the toughest and most exciting teams in the Premier League during his seven-year tenure. Similar is expected of him at Spurs, in a job that has frustrated some of the best managers in soccer history. Teams such as Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest have taken advantage of the slumbering United and Spurs in recent seasons. In 2025/26, they will also again be hungry to prove that their presence in the top six and in European competition is deserved. Further down the log table, newly promoted Sunderland, Burnley and Leeds United will be out to halt the recent trend of new arrivals being relegated one season after ascending to the top tier of English soccer. Over the past two seasons the newcomers have departed as quickly as they arrived. Last season, Southampton, Leicester City and Ipswich Town could not fend off the dreaded drop. At the end of the 2023/24 campaign Luton Town, Sheffield United and Burnley were sent packing. DM

Cardoso: ‘Let's resolve our issues and become stronger'

'Obviously, it's not the best thing to start the championship with a draw,''said Cardoso. Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has called on his side to respond positively after their frustrating 1-1 draw with Chippa United in the Betway Premiership at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday. Arthur Sales had given the Brazilians the lead in the first half before Khaya Mfecane's goal after the restart proved to be enough to earn United a valuable point in what was a lively and physical encounter. Sundowns' Cardoso – 'Not the best start' Although Cardoso remains confident that his team will bounce back in the game against Usuthu, the 53-year-old conceded that dropping two points on the opening weekend was far from ideal in a campaign where Sundowns are chasing an unprecedented ninth successive league crown. 'Obviously, it's not the best thing to start the championship with a draw,' said Cardoso. 'We need to arrive in the end with more points than our opponents and we have to fight in the next one. We need to think about the next game because after this one we need to look back, look at the mistakes and try to build a team.' After facing AmaZulu, Sundowns will turn their attention to Saturday's trip to Orlando Stadium for a mouth-watering MTN8 semifinal first leg clash with arch-rivals Orlando Pirates. Despite the futures of key players Lucas Ribeiro and Khuliso Mudau still being up in the air, the Portuguese coach remains confident his players can cope with the demands of a congested early-season schedule. 'I'm used to that (tight PSL schedule) and the team is more used to it. We know we have 72 hours to prepare ourselves for the next match,' said the former Espérance boss. 'We will be stronger in the next match' 'Obviously, the context of victory would have allowed us to be in a comfort zone, but it's not where we are and we'll deal with it in the right way. We will be stronger for sure in the next match and we're going to fight to win. ALSO READ: Chiefs' Ben Youssef – 'We suffered a bit' 'There's a lot to go with this team until the market is closed. Let's see what will happen but in the meantime, let's solve our issues and become stronger day after day and continue to work to develop our players because that's what we need to do.'
