"I would also like to thank the Prime Minister for visiting different parts of the state almost every month. It is a big thing. I would like to thank him, and let us have a round of applause for him. So all of those who have come here, please get up", Kumar told the mammoth rally, where seating arrangements were in place for five lakh people.

Chandigarh MC mulling policy to recover unpaid property tax from defaulters: Commissioner
Amid growing financial distress, the Municipal Corporation (MC), Chandigarh has begun working on a new policy to recover property tax dues from defaulters, MC Commissioner Amit Kumar said. The commissioner shared the development while responding to questions raised by councillor Mahesh Inder Singh Sidhu, who discussed a list of the top 20 property tax defaulters, which includes both government and private institutions, collectively owing unpaid property tax worth Rs 196 crore. Sidhu stressed that recovering even Rs 200 crore could substantially ease the civic body's financial strain and help resolve multiple civic issues. Kumar informed the councillors that a step-by-step approach is being adopted and that a formal recovery policy will be drafted within three months. The commissioner noted that the PGIMER has already paid Rs 12 crore, and efforts are underway to recover more dues. He also acknowledged that legal battles with institutions have slowed recovery, with many hiring senior lawyers. Sidhu suggested the MC's legal team may coordinate closely with senior standing counsels to strengthen the MC's legal arguments. Sidhu further questioned why Chandigarh has not received the grant it is entitled to under the Fourth Delhi Finance Commission, to which Kumar responded that a request under the Sixth Delhi Finance Commission has been sent to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. Advertisement Tax and Labor Welfare Concerns Raised Sidhu also drew the House's attention to unbilled advertisements in Elante Mall and urged immediate calculation and issuance of tax notices. The Commissioner assured action would be taken in the city's interest.

State govt required to act fairly & not discriminate: HC
Lucknow: The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court has said that the state government, as a welfare state, is required to act fairly granting equal treatment to persons who are placed equally. With this, it directed the principal secretary, PWD to issue NOC to an executive engineer for joining the national Highways Authority of India on deputation. On July 18, a bench of Justice Manish Mathur passed the verdict on the writ petition moved by executive engineer Mohd. Firdos Rahmani. The bench observed, "Grant of NOC to executive engineer Sudhir Kumar Bharadwaj in similar circumstances, while denying the same benefit to petitioner Rahmani, is clearly discriminatory and thus arbitrary being violative of Article 14 and 16 of the Constitution of India. " The petitioner had approached the HC seeking issuance of NOC from principal secretary, PWD, but he was denied on the ground that there was shortage of executive engineers in the department. The court has directed the principal secretary, PWD, to issue the NOC to the petitioner within ten days from the service of its order, so that he can join the NHAI on the post of deputy general manager (technical). The petitioner had applied for the said job in the NHAI and was selected on March 21, pending clearance from the PWD. However, the department denied him the NOC. The petitioner's counsel Gaurav Mehrotra had argued that the state govt cannot be allowed to discriminate on the issue.
