Pune: NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday was critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day speech and said not mentioning the name of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was "disturbing".
"I heard the Prime Minister's speech from the Red Fort. It was very disturbing that he did not mention Nehru in his entire speech," Pawar said in a private function in Pune, reacting to Modi's speech.
"Nehru gave important years of his youth to the freedom struggle of India. After independence, he led the country and spread the message of peace worldwide. Even after his immense contribution, his name was not taken by the Prime Minister, which was unfortunate," the veteran politician said.

On the 79th Independence Day, Modi gave his 12th consecutive speech from the Red Fort on Friday. The 103-minute oration was the longest by any Prime Minister on Independence Day.
Pawar, as a Rajya Sabha member, participated in the 300 MPs' recent protest march to the Election Commission of India's office in Delhi. Police detained them midway.
Speaking about the protest, Pawar said, "The present situation of politics is challenging.

It has been 14 days that the Parliament session is going on, but the House has not functioned even for a day. We sign and enter Parliament only to witness it getting adjourned after a ruckus. It is not a healthy sign for democracy."
He said, "For the first time in our history, 300 MPs came together for a peaceful protest. It included Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and members from other parties as well, but we were detained and taken to the police station.
The fight is to save democracy. If those in the govt do not find it important, then we, as opposition, will have to keep raising our voice."
Speaking at the private event organised to celebrate the 81st birthday of senior Congress member and former MLC Ulhas Pawar, Sharad Pawar said, "All his life, Ulhas Pawar walked on the path shown by Gandhi-Nehru. He also maintained a healthy communication with personalities from other fields such as literature and the Warkari community. It is essential for the country to continue its journey on the path of Gandhi and Nehru.
