Mercedes driver admits killing young woman in 140mph Christmas Day crash
Evan Forde, 32, of Bedford, was behind the wheel of a black Mercedes car when he crashed into the back of a BMW early on December 25 2022.
Maria Carolina Do Nascimento, who was a passenger in the BMW, died at the scene in Brent Cross, north London.
The accident happened on a 40mph stretch of Hendon Way in the early hours of the morning after Forde had reached speeds of more than 140mph.
Shortly beforehand, police officers on patrol in a marked vehicle had indicated for Forde's car to stop.
However, the vehicle drove off from police and there was no pursuit, Scotland Yard had said.
A short time later police were informed the same car had been involved in a collision with another car.
The people inside the Mercedes did not stop for police and fled the scene on foot.
London Ambulance Service was called but Ms Nascimento died at the scene.
On Tuesday, Forde appeared at the Old Bailey and pleaded guilty to causing Ms Nascimento's death by dangerous driving.
Members of the victim's family wept in court after he admitted the offence.
Defence barrister Tasmin Malcolm said Forde had 'always accepted' he was driving the Mercedes.
She said: 'Undoubtedly the speed Mr Forde was driving will be an aggravating feature to the court.
'It is important we are satisfied of the accuracy of the material relied on by the Crown.'
Prosecutor Frederick Hookway observed that small variations of the speeds involved in the case were unlikely to have an impact given the defendant had reached 'top speeds of over 140mph'.
Judge Anthony Leonard KC adjourned sentencing until October 22 and granted Forde continued conditional bail.
He told him: 'You have pleaded guilty to a very serious charge. There was perhaps no option other than to do so given the state of the evidence.
'However, the fact you pleaded at this stage will be taken into account at sentencing.
'You must understand the most likely result – if not the inevitable result – will be you sent to prison.'
Previously the Metropolitan Police said it had made a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct as is routine in such circumstances.

'But it is also an event where there have been numerous concerns about crowd safety and crime. As a consequence, almost 7,000 officers will be deployed to this year's event. They are there to keep revellers safe, not to join in the revelling. 'We want officers to positively engage with the carnivalgoers while staying vigilant at all times and remaining able to respond and intervene swiftly as necessary. They can't do this if they are dancing. 'The standards of behaviour expected as part of the policing operation will be communicated clearly before the event, just as they have been in recent years.' Amid escalating levels of violence Deputy Assistant Commissioner Matt Ward, police commander for this year's event, said the carnival's size creates 'unique challenges'. The Met has faced increasing pressure to ensure the safety of revellers after Cher Maximen, 32, was stabbed to death by Shakeil Thibou, 20, in front of her three-year-old daughter last year; while chef Mussie Imnetu, 41, was murdered in the street. The annual celebration has been running since 1966, and arrest totals have been on a rising curve since the start of the millennium when they stood at 158 in 2002. The total over the past 20 years between 2005 and 2024 is now well over the 5,000 mark. This year, police want to identify 'violent gangs' planning to attend and urged anyone with information of individuals intending to engage in violence to come forward. A series of 31 anti-terror concrete barriers were installed on Portobello Road last month by Kensington and Chelsea Council to help deter vehicle attacks in the popular market area of Notting Hill following counter-terrorism guidance issued by the Met. But the council said these 'hostile vehicle mitigation measures' will be removed for two weeks from today to ensure 'people can move freely and safely during the event'. Susan Hall, a Conservative member of the London Assembly, said in a bombshell report published earlier this month that the carnival in recent years had only narrowly 'avoided a mass crush on the scale of the Hillsborough disaster'. London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan has warned of the risk of a 'crowd crush' at the carnival, saying at a meeting last month that he had 'seen images of some of the crowds at some parts' of the event and 'watching them made me frightened'.

A 27-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with road traffic offences. He is due to appear at court at a later date. "A pursuit took place and the vehicle was involved in a crash on The Wisp, Edinburgh. "There were no other vehicles involved in the crash and no reports of any injuries. Second man admits robbery in care home BMW crash case
Two elderly residents at Highcliffe Care Home, Witherwack, died following the crash which happened last month. Reece Parish, of Fordham Road, Sunderland, appeared at Newcastle Crown Court via a videolink from prison to admit robbery. He denied a kidnap charge relating to a woman who was in the BMW 3-series while he and co-accused Sam Asgari-Tabar took it for a test drive. Asgari-Tabar, of no fixed address, had previously admitted robbery and causing serious injury by dangerous driving to an elderly care home resident who suffered spinal fractures when the car smashed into the building, punching a large hole in the structure. Judge Robert Spragg said the men will be sentenced on October 17 and he remanded the pair in custody. He told them: 'You have both very sensibly pleaded guilty to these matters and you will be given credit for that from the sentencing judge in due course.' Christopher Knox, for Parish, said the defendant was 'regretful and apologetic' about what happened. At the time of the crash, Asgari-Tabar was subject to a suspended sentence imposed in May, the court heard. The Crown Prosecution Service indicated that it will not proceed with the kidnap charges against the pair and those alleged offences will lie on file. Northumbria Police were alerted to reports of a stolen car in Fenham, Newcastle, on the evening of July 10 and a suspect vehicle was spotted in the Sunderland area 15 minutes later. A pursuit then followed which ended with the BMW crashing into the care home, causing extensive structural damage to the building. Initially, Northumbria Police said eight residents required hospital treatment. Two days later, the force said a woman in her 90s and a woman in her 80s, neither of whom were in the eight taken to hospital, had died and police inquiries were ongoing. After the hearing, Chief Superintendent Mark Hall, of Northumbria Police, said: 'This was a shocking incident in one of our communities – the actions of both men that night were incredibly reckless. 'I am pleased the swift and diligent work of all involved in our investigation left them with no choice but to admit their guilt at court.' Northumbria Police confirmed on Tuesday that the two men will not face charges over the deaths of the two women. The force said: 'Following the incident, two care home residents died a short time later but no criminal proceedings are to be brought in relation to the deaths.'
