Nascar: Shane van Gisbergen makes it back-to-back Cup race wins

Kiwi motor racing ace Shane van Gisbergen has won back-to-back victories in the Nascar Cup Series, with a strong win at Sonoma Raceway in California.
The three-time Supercars champion backed up
his win in the Chicago Street Race last weekend
with the Sonoma triumph.
Van Gisbergen, 36, hasn't won an oval track this year but has won the last three road course races - in Mexico City, Chicago and Sonoma.
Those three wins put him equal with Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin and Christopher Bell for most victories this season.
Van Gisbergen started in pole position and led in his No 88 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet for 97 of the 110 laps at Sonoma, withstanding interruptions from a flurry of late caution periods before powering away late in the race.
He won by 1.128 seconds ahead of Chase Briscoe.
"That was pretty tough stuff. We had an amazing car," van Gisbergen said.
"I had a really fun weekend here, some great races, and I hope everyone enjoyed that.
"Now we need to keep getting better on the ovals and start proving some people wrong.
"I had an amazing time in Australia and then to come here… the last couple of weeks or years actually has been a dream come true."
The Cup Series heads to Dover in Delaware this weekend.

Photo:via CNN Newsource While Chelsea stole the show on the pitch in a masterful showing against Paris Saint-Germain, President Donald Trump was arguably the center of attention at the FIFA Club World Cup final. Trump and first lady Melania Trump were at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey to witness the Blues' dominant performance against PSG, as two goals from Cole Palmer and one from new addition João Pedro gave Chelsea a 3-0 victory to become the inaugural winners of the newly formatted competition. But for Trump, it was an eventful afternoon from his very first appearance in front of fans. He and the first lady were cheered upon their arrival at MetLife Stadium, but when he was shown on the video screens during the pre-game national anthem, Trump received a scattering of boos. He was booed again later on after the game, when he was presenting medals on the field to players alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino. But a hostile reception from some in attendance wasn't the end of things for the 79-year-old, who was routinely shown on the TV coverage of the game sitting alongside Infantino. CNN reported that Attorney General Pam Bondi attended as she is under pressure over the release of a memo about accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was also spotted in the suite by the pool camera following the president and the Associated Press reported Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, NFL legend Tom Brady and media mogul Rupert Murdoch all joined the president as well. Having handed the winner's trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James with Infantino, Trump remained on stage while the FIFA boss departed. There appeared to be some confusion among the Chelsea players as to whether they should wait for Trump to leave before proceeding with the ceremonial trophy lift. But after a few moments, Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez - standing on the other side of Trump - motioned for James to go ahead with Trump standing center stage. It led to the unusual image of the Chelsea squad celebrating its tournament victory with the US president squarely in the middle of it all. Afterward, the Chelsea players expressed their bewilderment about Trump's presence on stage. Typically in soccer, the trophy lift is for the players and staff of the winning team. "I knew he was going to be here, but I didn't know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy, so I was a bit confused," said Palmer, who was named the player of the tournament. James added: "Before they told me that he was going to present the trophy and exit the stage. I thought he was going to exit the stage, but he wanted to stay." There was confusion on social media as well as videos appeared to show Infantino giving Trump a winner's medal. CNN Sports has contacted FIFA to ask whether Trump was specifically given a medal by the body and to whether he was meant to be on stage during the trophy lift. "It was an upset today, I guess," Trump told reporters after flying back to Washington following Chelsea's victory, per AP. "But it was a great match." It was a unique ending to a unique tournament, one that saw games played in scorching heat, matches delayed for thunderstorms and teams from across the globe congregate to compete against one another. The final - contrary to other big soccer matches - had the customary razzle-dazzle that comes with an American sporting event through a halftime performance, with British rock band Coldplay making a surprise cameo performance alongside J Balvin, Doja Cat, Tems, and Emmanuel Kelly. With the World Cup being played in the US, Canada and Mexico in less than 12 months, things could get even bigger and more unusual than normal. - CNN

NASCAR: Kiwi Shane Van Gisbergen wins again
Shane van Gisbergen extended his winning streak to two straight and three victories in the last five weeks with yet another dominating run on a road course. The New Zealander once again showed he's in a completely different class on road and street courses than his rivals as he led 97 of 110 laps to win from pole at Sonoma Raceway. All three of his wins this year have been from pole — which tied him with Jeff Gordon for a NASCAR record of three consecutive road course victories from the top starting spot. Gordon did it between the 1998 and 1999 seasons. Victory number four for van Gisbergen — who stunned NASCAR in 2023 when he popped into the debut Chicago street course race from Australian V8 Supercars and won — seemed a given before teams even arrived at the picturesque course in California wine country. His rivals have lamented that "SVG" has a unique braking technique he mastered Down Under that none of them — all oval specialists — can ever learn. The morning's headlines in 90 seconds, including a fire at an Auckland chapel, new plan for international students, and a first time Wimbledon winner. He and Ross Chastain have pumped energy into the team over this summer stretch with Chastain kicking it off with a Memorial Day weekend victory at the Coca-Cola 600. Van Gisbergen is the fastest driver to win four Cup Series races — in his 34th start — since Parnelli Jones in 1969. "It means everything. That's why I race cars. I had an amazing time in Australia, and then to come here and the last couple weeks, or years, actually, has been a dream come true," said van Gisbergen. "I've really enjoyed my time in NASCAR. Thanks, everyone, for making me feel so welcome. I hope I'm here for a long time to come." The Sonoma win made it four victories for Trackhouse in eight weeks. Van Gisbergen was second from pole in Saturday's Xfinity Series race. Although he dominated again Sunday, van Gisbergen pitted from the lead with 27 laps remaining and then had to drive his way back to the front. He got it with a pass of Michael McDowell with 19 laps remaining, but two late cautions made van Gisbergen win restarts to close out the victory in his Chevrolet. Chase Briscoe was second in a Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. "I've never played against Michael Jordan, but I imagine this was very similar," Briscoe said after not being able to pass van Gisbergen on the two late restarts — the last with five laps remaining. (Source: Associated Press) In-Season challenge The mid-season tournament that pays US$1 million (NZ$1.6 million) to the winner is down to four drivers. Alex Bowman finished 25th and eliminated Ty Dillon, who finished 26th. Tyler Reddick (11th) knocked out Ryan Preece (16th), John Hunter Nemechek knocked out teammate Erik Jones as they finished 21st and 22nd, and Zane Smith, with a seventh-place finish, eliminated Ty Gibbs. Bowman, at eighth, is the highest-seeded driver still in the challenge, which debuted this year. Crew fight ADVERTISEMENT NASCAR officials had to separate the crews for Brad Keselowski and Ty Gibbs when members from the two teams scrapped on pit road during the race. Keselowski's crew confronted Gibbs' crew after Gibbs drove through their pit stall and narrowly missed hitting some of Keselowski's crew members already in place waiting for him. The confrontation appeared to be contained to pushing and shoving and NASCAR quickly stepped between them. Both crews were given an official warning for fighting but NASCAR said Gibbs did nothing wrong. Clean race — for awhile It took 61 of the 110 laps for the first caution for an on-track incident — when Ryan Blaney was knocked off the course and into the dirt early in the third stage. The contact from Chris Buescher left Blaney stranded, and right before NASCAR could throw the yellow, Bubba Wallace and Denny Hamlin both spun. It was technically the third caution of the race, but the first two were for natural stage breaks. The race ended with six cautions — two in the final stretch. Up next The Cup Series races Sunday at Dover Motor Speedway in Delaware, where Denny Hamlin won last year.
