One of my favorite rom-coms of the past decade just arrived on Hulu — and it's got a killer Brad Pitt cameo
So no, you won't find it in our guide to five movies on Hulu this month with a 90% or higher on Rotten Tomatoes — though critics and audiences alike largely enjoyed this movie — but you might have more fun watching "The Lost City" than any of those choices. Whether you're looking for your next date night movie or just something mindless to watch, this star-powered rom-com will get the job done, and you might even find yourself filing it away as a rewatchable movie the next time you need something dumb and fun.
If you're like me, the peak of the romantic comedy genre was the 2000s. Whether it was "Just Friends," "The Proposal" or some other movie starring a pre-Deadpool Ryan Reynolds, these movies were the perfect blend of charming and sexy without being totally cloying or overly sexual. They were as much about the "rom" as they were about the "com."
"The Lost City" is very much in that same vein, and I'm not just saying that because Sandra Bullock starred in both. She is a big reason why both movies work, though. She plays a powerful woman who struggles to be romantic in any way, and yet it's undeniable that she's magnetic despite her awkward, charmless moments. It's something that she is particularly well-suited for and that other rom-com stars of a similar caliber would struggle to do. Julia Roberts, for example, I find, doesn't ever turn off the charm when she delves into this drama.
Bullock's romantic entanglements in both movies are similar in construction as well. In "The Proposal," she's paired with her handsome assistant (played by Reynolds), and in "The Lost City," she's paired with Alan, the handsome cover model of her book series, played perfectly by Channing Tatum, a very smart man who excels at playing charming idiots.
And a charming idiot he is in "The Lost City," but one that you don't struggle to see being able to handle the action set pieces in this movie. You don't need to suspend disbelief to believe that Alan has the physical traits to break Bullock's Loretta Sage free from the clutches of evil billionaire Abigail Fairfax (Daniel Radcliffe), even if you might struggle to believe he has the wits to handle high-pressure situations.
Luckily for Alan, though, he's not the brains behind the operation to rescue Loretta from Abigail's heavily guarded island compound. He's instead following the lead of former Navy SEAL Jack Trainer, a CIA operative played by Brad Pitt.

You'll notice that, up to this point, I haven't given you a ton about the plot of "The Lost City." That's because the plot of this rom-com, like any good rom-com, is largely irrelevant. It's just a device to get two or more of this movie's incredible cast in the same room.
Aside from Bullock, Tatum and Pitt, who I'd watch sit in a room and have a conversation for an hour, Radcliffe puts on a more than serviceable performance as the movie's villain, especially in the earlier part of the movie before Alan and Jack start their rescue attempt. The four of them are also supported by Oscar-winner Da'Vine Joy Randolph, whom I'm not sure I've seen be bad in anything, ever.
The action elements of this action comedy are fine, but they're more played for comedic effect than anything. Much like the plot, they're just devices to move the movie forward to another scene where these actors can be together. "The Lost City" is first and foremost a romantic comedy, and if you loved the star-driven rom-coms of the 2000s, it's a must-watch now that you can stream it on Hulu.

16 Unfairly Maligned Movies On Hulu That Deserve A Second Chance
Whether you were too young to appreciate them, or your opinion suffered from "groupthink" via the Internet, there are so many movies I can name that have been (unfairly) maligned through the years. Okay, maybe they weren't "good" movies, but every film deserves a second chance. Besides, if I can shove popcorn in my face, I am seated. Here are 16 movies currently on Hulu that, despite getting panned by critics and/or audiences, are worth the watch: (2005) This movie is filled with all kinds of unhinged robot puns and in-your-face comedy. The great Mel Brooks voices Bigweld. With a 54% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, it's proof that some of you can't let kids have a laugh and some fun. Watch it on Hulu. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003) This movie is a mess, dorky, and I love it. It's a fun thrill ride of a movie, and despite its 16% critics' score on RT, younger me still enjoyed the action and cheesy dialogue. I highly recommend it for comic book fans. Watch it on Hulu. Day After Tomorrow (2004) Come for the effects, not the story. No matter the school year, I feel like I watched this in every science class whenever my science teacher was out sick. With scores 50% and below from both audiences and critics on RT, I'd argue this is the most memorable disaster movie of the 2000s. Watch it on Hulu. of the Bride: Part II (1995) Who says sequels have to suck? Silly plot and all, the sequel to Steve Martin's Father of the Bride is a lot of fun and laughs. A 54% on RT seems HARSH for any movie starring Martin Short as Franck. Watch it on Hulu. of the Phoenix (2004) I'm sure the original starring the great Jimmy Stewart is lightyears better, but you gotta respect them for trying to take that and make it more of an action flick. For some reason, a twist in this movie still sticks out to me, and it's one of my favorites from a "bad" that alone is worth watching. (Of same twist is from the original, but I thought it was handled well in the remake.) Watch it on Hulu. 3 (1992) Hear me the first two are way better. But there are plenty of great moments in the third installment. When it doesn't rely on CGI xenomorphs, the story is pretty interesting and veers away from the norm Alien franchise fans are used to. The sub-50% scores on RT are credited to the disappointment of the film (and the opening twist), but I'd crank it up by percent. Watch it on Hulu. in Space (1998) The nostalgia hits with this one. That design for Robot, the cast, my childhood movie had everything. Great? Not quite. But it is a fun ride. Sub-30% by both critics and audiences is WILD. What happened to everyone's sense of (silly and campy) adventure? Watch it on Hulu. (2012) My cat's favorite movie (it's something with the colors). Again, I think people allow disappointment to drag their ratings down, because 68% RT audience score, although not the worst, is still extremely low for a film of this magnitude. Watch it on Hulu. 9.A Haunting in Venice (2023) This is a case of overexposure. The Hercule Poirot films are often overlooked, but this one in particular really flew under the radar. It has a 6.5 on IMDb, but is certified fresh on RT. Mixed signals, much? It's a cool mystery thriller movie with plenty of horror elements. Watch it on Hulu. (2014) Comedy is quite subjective, and if you like Melissa McCarthy, you should probably ignore the ratings. It is a cast made up of mostly women, which spells bad news for any comedy looking for honest critiques, and the reviews def reflect that if you read the downvotes. Watch it on Hulu. Monkey (2025) So this is new-new, but I was shocked to discover audiences did not love it (56% audience score on RT). It's a dark comedy with plenty of gore and scares. I thought it was hilarious, and although not the most fantastic horror movie I've seen this year, "rotten" feels a bit harsh. Stop disrespecting horror, or we are gonna have to throw hands, people. Watch it on Hulu. Proposal (2009) A 45% critics' score on RT. 45%! You all are wild. Any movie starring Betty White deserves at least an 80% rating. I don't make the rules! Also: Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. You will at least get a few laughs even if your heart is stone. Watch it on Hulu. (2024) Horror fans, beware. This isn't a hardcore ghost flick, but it is an incredibly original idea and shot beautifully. I feel like the poor ratings from audiences are due to expectations (52% audience score on RT), but I think it's a unique experience in "movie-going" even at home. Watch it on Hulu. Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (2005) People are afraid to let their "goof flag" fly. Although not a "rotten" score, people really bashed this when it came out because they weren't able to embrace silly sci-fi. Ironic, now so many superhero movies have become full-blown comedies. Wrong place, wrong time...I guess. Watch it on Hulu. 15.I, Robot (2004) Sleep. Sleep. Sleep. Everyone sleeps on this film as far as sci-fi joints are concerned. It's got plenty of memorable dialogue, fun action, and I'd argue it's one of Will Smith's more fun leading man roles (Alan Tudyk is great as always, too). Fans enjoyed it, but the critics' score is a 57% which is a rotten opinion if you ask me. Watch it on Hulu. Dead (2013) Scary as hell, tough to watch, and a pretty memorable installment to the Evil Dead franchise. Not as popular as Evil Dead Rise, the film still packs a punch that it's RT score of 63% does not do justice. Watch it on Hulu. Is there a movie you think everyone was WAYYY too harsh about? Lindsay Lohan and Shailene Woodley Will Star in the New Hulu Series 'Count My Lies'
Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy. The Lindsay Lohan renaissance isn't over yet. Up next, the Freakier Friday actress is set to star in the new Hulu limited series, Count My Lies, alongside Shailene Woodley. The series will be brought to you by the This Is Us showrunners, Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. Here's everything we know so far about the forthcoming show. Count My Lies is based on the 2025 novel by Sophie Stava of the same name. Stava will also produce the series. Per Variety, the official logline reads: 'When compulsive liar Sloane Caraway fibs her way into a nanny position for the gorgeous and charismatic Violet and Jay Lockhart, it seems she's finally landed her dream job. But little does Sloane know, she's just entered a household brimming with secrets that are about to explode—with potentially catastrophic consequences for all.' Lindsay Lohan will play Violet Lockhart and will also executive produce the series. Shailene Woodley will play Sloane Caraway and executive produce as well. Additional cast members have yet to be announced. In her summer 2025 ELLE cover story, Lohan spoke about how excited she was to take on a more dramatic role. 'I love the book,' she said. 'But when I was reading it, I had to put it down for a day because I was like, 'I'm stressed now.' But I liked that. It's going to be nice to do something different. I was talking to the writers and showrunners yesterday and told them, 'I don't know if you realize, but this is the first time where I don't have to have a romantic interest, where I don't have to kiss someone at the end of the movie.' Which is so refreshing—to not have to be that girl for once.' There isn't a release date yet, but stay tuned.
