Iowa football 2025 schedule preview: Week 2 vs Iowa State
Welcome back to my Iowa football schedule preview series, were we preview every single opponent on the Hawkeyes 2025 schedule. Last time out, we discussed the Week 1 matchup against Albany. And today, it's on to the Iowa State Cyclones, who the Hawks will face in Week 2.
The Cyclones are riding a lot of momentum under head coach Matt Campbell, who's building a good program up in Ames. Let's take a closer look at Iowa State entering the 2025 season.
Week 2: Iowa football vs. Iowa State
Iowa will travel to Jack Trice stadium to play the Cyclones on September 6, with kick-off scheduled for 11 a.m.
Iowa State is coming off an impressive 11-3 record in 2024, including a win over Miami in the Pop-Tarts Bowl. They made the Big Twelve Championship game, losing 45-19 to Arizona State. Those 11 wins are the most in a single season in school history for the Cyclones, a testament to the job Matt Campbell has done there.
Campbell took the Iowa State job in November of 2015 after Paul Rhoades was fired. He's 64-51 overall and 45-36 in conference play across his nine seasons in charge. He has three bowl wins and Iowa State has finished in the top 25 twice during his tenure. And he's got the players this season to make another Big Twelve championship run.

History between the Hawkeyes and Cyclones
Unlike their week one opponent, Iowa has plenty of experience with Iowa State over the years. In their last meeting in 2024, the Cyclones shocked Iowa in Iowa City 20-19 on a game-winning field goal. The last time these two teams played in Ames resulted in a 20-13 win for the Hawkeyes.
Overall, Iowa leads the series 47-24, but the Cyclones have won two of the past three matchups and will look to defend home turf in the 2025 installment of the greatest rivalry in the state of Iowa. Buckle in folks, this will be the first of many tests for Iowa in 2025.

Colorado football currently has four receivers on NFL training camp rosters who were on the team last season. Other than the Jaguars' Travis Hunter, the standout has been Carolina Panthers rookie Jimmy Horn Jr. Horn was a sixth-round pick by the Panthers in the 2025 NFL draft, but after a fantastic offseason, he is looking like a steal of the draft. With his speed and toughness, Horn is everything a team would want out of a sixth-round receiver. Horn was in motion before the snap and then snuck underneath, and quarterback Andy Dalton found him for an easy walk into the endzone. While it was not a typical go-ball that the speedy Horn should see plenty of this season, it was a play that Colorado ran a ton with Horn. Get him the ball in space and let his open-field ability do the rest. Panthers head coach Dave Canales has loved what he has seen from the rookie receiver so far. "I think it's the energy he plays with," said Canales to "He doesn't quit on routes, he continues after the normal part of the protection he can count on, he continues to find space and play fast, and, it's a credit to his fitness, but it's also a credit to just the energy that he puts out there, that you want to throw to him." While sixth-round picks are far from guaranteed to make the final 53-man roster, Horn's performances through the offseason have made it almost a forgone conclusion that he makes Carolina's final group. See what Sonny Dykes had to say about UNC's opener against UNC We are under a month away from kickoff for the college football season, and for the North Carolina Tar Heels, they are ushering in a new era under Bill Belichick. The Tar Heels will play host to TCU on Labor Day in primetime as they are the standalone game for ESPN. It will be a huge game for both programs as Chapel Hill should be electric for the game. But as we continue to countdown the days, TCU head coach Sonny Dykes had a comment on the opener. "There's going to be a whole lot of things we're not going to have the opportunity to prepare for and a lot of unknowns. We've got to make sure we do a good job making sure our players are ready to go play." Dykes wasn't taking a shot at UNC or Belichick at all. Instead, he was praising the head coach in his first year at the college level. It's going to be a tough challenge for the Tar Heels as TCU is no slouch. But getting off to a good start will be key as well for Belichick and his team. Michigan State football poaches Texas staff member for recruiting department
Michigan State football has poached a staff member from one of the prominent programs in the sport, with Jonathan Smith adding a new member to his support system. Michael Morales has been hired as a Player Personnel Analyst with the Spartans. Morales brings a background in player evaluation, football operations and data analysis. Prior to joining the MSU program, he has spent three years with the Texas Football program. A big player in the data analytics, Morales spent time working for Pro Football Focus, where he honed in different facets of statistical analysis. He will bring that analysis background to the Michigan State recruiting department.
