Giant salamander fossil unearthed at Gray Fossil Site
According to a news release from East Tennessee State University (ETSU), the giant plethodontid salamander was strong-jawed and possessed a powerful bite.

The species, Dynamognathus robertsoni, was about 16 inches long, making it one of the largest salamanders to ever exist in the area.
In the present day, Northeast Tennessee and all of Southern Appalachia are teeming with a wide variety of salamanders. Among those, researchers say, are dusky salamanders, a stream-dwelling species that measures about seven inches long at their largest. Dusky salamanders are related to Red Hills salamanders, a large species that lives underground with a worm-like body and small limbs.
'Finding something that looks like a Red Hills salamander here in East Tennessee was a bit of a surprise,' Assistant Collections Manager Davis Gunnin stated in the release. 'Today, they're only found in a few counties in southern Alabama, and researchers thought of them as a highly specialized dead-end lineage not particularly relevant to the evolution of the dusky salamanders. Discovery of Dynamognathus robertsoni here in Southern Appalachia shows that these types of relatively large, burrowing salamanders were once more widespread in eastern North America and may have had a profound impact on the evolution of Appalachian salamander communities.'
Guinn described Dynamognathus robertsoni as 'the largest plethodontid salamander and one of the largest terrestrial salamanders in the world.'
Assistant Collections Manager Shay Maden said the name of the newly discovered salamander comes from its bite and also pays homage to the volunteer who found the first specimen at Gray Fossil Site.
'This group of salamanders has unusual cranial anatomy that gives them a strong bite force, so the genus name – Dynamognathus – Greek for 'powerful jaw,' is given to highlight the great size and power of the salamander compared to its living relatives,' Maden said.
As for 'robertsoni,' that name comes from Gray Fossil Site volunteer Wayne Robertson. According to ETSU, Robertson discovered the first specimen of the salamander and has sifted through more than 50 tons of soil containing fossils since 2000.

Fake scientific publications are a serious and growing problem, Northwestern University researchers say
Published scientific research fuels the breakthroughs that shape our world — but what happens when that research is totally fake? Researchers at Northwestern University said the number of junk scientific publications is growing, and bad actors are profiting. "These people are ruining it for all of us," said Northwestern University researcher and professor of engineering science and applied math Luís Amaral. Amaral and fellow Northwestern researcher Reese Richardson said they have always known there were fake scientific studies floating around. But it wasn't until they started studying the issue — with the help of several helpful sleuths — that they discovered the problem was much bigger than anyone thought. They showed CBS News Chicago four research papers on four different types of cells — but the papers all "borrowed" the same set of images. "We did this analysis, and we found out something that was extraordinarily scary," said Amaral. "Essentially, the number of fraudulent papers is doubling every year and a half." Amaral and Richardson's study on the problem was published earlier this month. In a nutshell, the publication of fraudulent science is outpacing the publication of legitimate science. "Everywhere we looked, we were seeing indications that there was systematic fraud being produced," Richardson said. But why would anyone spend the time publishing fake research? Amaral and Richardson say there are two main reasons. The first is buying a reputation. "They do this out in the open," said Richardson. "It is not hard to find paper-mill advertisements at all." Amaral and Richardson showed CBS News Chicago hundreds of advertisements that have appeared online — asking for anywhere from $100 a publication to about $3,000 in exchange for authorship. The second reason for the fakes is to push for a certain point of view — for example, backing a dietary supplement for financial gain. "So there are lots of people with a point of view, and it has become very easy for them to make it appear like there are hundreds of experts, thousands of publications that are very highly cited about all of these," said Amaral. In a 2024 post on his blog, Richardson specifically cited an example of how a researcher with a financial interest in the turmeric industry was able to push fake research on the benefits of turmeric. Richardson wrote that Bharat Aggarwal, who worked at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston from 1989 to 2015, authored more than 120 articles about the compound curcumin in turmeric — claiming that it therapeutic potential for cancers, Alzheimer's disease, and most recently, COVID-19. At first, MD Anderson seemed to endorse Aggarwal's research, and the FAQ page on the cancer center's website even recommended that visitors buy curcumin wholesale from a company that paid Aggarwal as a speaker, Richardson wrote. But in 2012, MD Anderson Cancer Center launched a research fraud probe against Aggarwal, which led to the retraction of 30 articles — some of them about curcumin, Richardson wrote. Still, while Aggarwal retired from MD Anderson in 2015, he has gone on authoring articles and appearing at conferences, Richardson wrote. Curcumin does not work well as a treatment for any disease, Richardson wrote. But even though Aggarwal's research has been discredited, the volume of studies published on curcumin keeps growing — and they also often show signs of fraud, Richardson wrote. Amaral and Richardson say they're raising the red flag about the fakes now — at a time when the future of federal funding for some legitimate science is uncertain. "There is only greater competition, and a more scarce pool of resources, for scientists to use and do genuine science," said Richardson. "If actually, there is an entire stream of research that is actually making false claims… it puts all of our health at risk," added Amaral. The authors argue their findings should serve as a wake-up call to the scientific community, which needs to act before we all lose confidence in the scientific process.

Man Steals $21M of Lunar Rocks from NASA to Use During Sex After Promising His Girlfriend the Moon

In July 2002, NASA intern Thad Roberts, his girlfriend of three weeks and another friend stole 17 pounds of moon rocks and a meteorite from Houston's Johnson Space Center in a daring dead-of-the-night burglary. The crime involved authentic NASA badges, rewriring security cameras and Neoprene bodysuits to avoid setting off thermal alarms. It took NASA several days to notice the missing 601-pound safe containing an estimated $21 million worth of moon rocks from every lunar landing from 1969 to 1972. Roberts, the brains behind the heist, was 24 years old when he arrived at NASA, having completed a triple degree in physics, geology and geophysics at the University of Utah. Eventually, Roberts met Tiffany Fowler, a 22-year-old who worked in NASA's tissue culture laboratory, conducting stem cell research. They began a relationship and moved in together within three weeks. Not long after, he told her about his idea to steal moon rocks, which was said to have intrigued her. 'I was in love with Tiffany,' he told the LA Times in 2004. 'In my mind, I was thinking, 'Baby, I'd give you the moon.' It would be a romantic start to our relationship.' When Fowler agreed to be an accomplice, the duo grabbed a third person, Shae Saur, also a NASA intern, to help. One July evening, the three interns pulled up to Building 31, where the moon rocks were being housed. Roberts, now 48, and Fowler headed into the building, while Saur reportedly served as a lookout and watched the rewired cameras. The couple donned Neoprene bodysuits, went straight into the airless room and fled with the safe, which was cracked using a power saw. "In my own head, stealing something wasn't the way I looked at it," Roberts told CBS in 2012. "We weren't going to take this money we were getting from it to go buy a yacht or lots of cars or a big house. We were gonna live just the small kind of lifestyle we were, but fund science that might change the world, you know?' Asked why he went through with he heist, he said, "I mean, the simple answer is to say that I did it for love. I did it because I wanted to be loved. I wanted someone to know that I'd literally cared about them that much. And to have the symbol there to remind them of it." Using the defense that he was essentially a fool in love, Roberts has argued that the theft wasn't financially motivated, but the FBI said otherwise, indicating he had been in contact with a buyer from Belgium, who was willing to pay the asking price of $1,000 to $5,000 per gram. The buyer, though, got suspicious and contacted the FBI, who quickly sent undercover agents to Orlando, where the sale was set to take place. On July 20, 2002, the 33rd anniversary of the first moon walk, Roberts and Fowler drove from Houston to Orlando to meet with the buyer. About an hour before the sale, though, Roberts had an idea. "I take some of the moon rocks, and I put 'em underneath the blanket in the bed," he said. He and Fowler then had sex. 'I never said anything, but I'm sure she could feel it. She never said anything directly, either, but it was more about the symbol of what we were doing — you know, basically having sex on the moon,' he told CBS. 'It's more uncomfortable than not, but it wasn't about the comfort at that point. It was about the expression. And no one had ever had sex on the moon before. I think we can safely say that.' Roberts' luck ran out shortly at the meeting with the undercover agents, who placed him and Flower in handcuffs. Authorities nabbed Saur later that day, and a fourth accomplice, Gordon McWhorter, who helped find the Belgian buyer, was also arrested. Still, the FBI said the rocks are now 'virtually useless to the scientific community.' A press release added, 'They also destroyed three decades worth of handwritten research notes by a NASA scientist that had been locked in the safe.' Roberts pleaded guilty in 2002 to stealing moon rocks. He also admitted to stealing dinosaur bones and fossils from the Natural History Museum in Salt Lake City while he was attending the University of Utah, the Deseret News reported. He was released two years early from prison in 2008 after serving more than six years of an eight-year sentence. Fowler and Saur pleaded guilty and were given 180 days of house arrest, 150 hours of community service, a three-year prohibition, and ordered to pay more than $9,000 in restitution to NASA. McWhorter was found guilty in trial and received a six-year prison sentence. Roberts and Fowler reportedly never saw each other again.
