The Arizona Cardinals wrapped up their week of preparation for their second preseason matchup, as they take on the Denver Broncos Saturday night at 9:30 p.m. ET (6:30 p.m Arizona time) from Empower Field at Mile High in Denver. They held a joint practice on Thursday and decided they would not play their starters on Saturday.
Plus, there was other news about safety Budda Baker, who made the "NFL Top 100" for the sixth consecutive season, coming in at No. 34.
Veteran defensive tackle Calais Campbell told reporters he would be surprised if this season isn't his last.

The Engine: Alyssa Thomas driving new-look Phoenix Mercury near the top of WNBA standings
PHOENIX (AP) — A marketing panel with Castrol landed Alyssa Thomas on a NASCAR hood. While attending the panel at the WNBA All-Star game last month, Thomas was approached by the motor oil company about putting her image on a NASCAR for an upcoming race. The Phoenix Mercury star loved the idea and helped in the design process, leading to her face making a 168-lap trip around Indianapolis Motor Speedway on the hood of RFK Racing's No. 60 Castrol Ford, driven by Ryan Preece. 'It was a fitting pairing being that my nickname is The Engine,' Thomas said. 'Not too many people can say their face is on a car, let alone in a race, so it was a really cool experience.' The Mercury had a lot of unknowns heading into the 2025 season after Diana Taurasi retired and Brittney Griner signed with the Atlanta Dream. Thomas has been the driving force behind the Mercury's rise. Fitting in perfectly in first-year coach Nate Tibbets' pace-and-space style, Thomas has been stuffing stat sheets while the Mercury have racked up wins. Entering Wednesday's games, Phoenix was fourth in the WNBA standings at 21-13 after finishing 19-21 a year ago. 'She's the ultimate winner, she's the ultimate competitor,' Tibbetts said. 'She wants to win at everything.' Thomas was the three-time ACC player of the year at Maryland and an All-American her senior season before arriving in Connecticut in a draft-day trade with the New York Liberty in 2014. The 6-foot-2 forward spent her first 11 WNBA seasons with the Sun, twice leading them to the WNBA Finals while earning five All-Star nods. She's also made the all-WNBA team three times and the all-defensive team five times. Thomas arrived in the desert via an offseason sign-and-trade deal as a key part of the Mercury's rebuilding, which includes fellow newcomer Satou Sabally and Kahleah Copper, Phoenix's leading scorer a year ago. 'It was a decision that I made,' Thomas said. 'In speaking with Nate and Nick (U'ren), I just felt it was a perfect fit for me and my game, and off the court as well.' Thomas has thrived. Already the WNBA's leader in triple-doubles, she has added five more with the Mercury, including a WNBA-record three straight this month. Thomas has 20 of the 52 triple-doubles in WNBA history and her four this month match the most of any other WNBA player's career. Thomas was named an All-Star for the sixth time in her first season with the Mercury and has become an MVP contender with some of the best numbers of her career. She's third in the WNBA with 8.6 rebounds per game and second on the Mercury at 16.1 points while shooting a career-high 54.3% from the floor. Thomas' biggest impact in Tibbetts' offense may be her playmaking. Despite having the size of an interior player, she's used her vision and court awareness to become the WNBA's most prolific distributing forward. Thomas set the WNBA single-season record for assists with 316 in 2023 and is seventh on the league's all-time assists list — the only forward in the top 10. While in Phoenix, she's nearly doubled her career assist average with a league-leading 9.0 this season — over five per game more than the next closest player. 'There's just so much space and I feel like it's a perfect fit for me,' Thomas said. 'It's been a long time since I've played with this many shooters.' NY Giants' Cam Skattebo might play in final preseason game: What to know
Former Arizona State star running back Cam Skattebo could suit up for the New York Giants' preseason finale, Thursday, Aug. 21, and is now more likely to play in Week 1. The do-everything standout for last season's Big 12 champion Sun Devils was cleared to return to practice for the Giants on Tuesday, Aug. 19, Giants coach Brian Daboll told reporters, and reports indicate things are looking good. Skattebo, whose nagging hamstring injury caused him to miss several practices and the Giants' first two preseason games, sits at No. 3 on the running back depth chart. Skattebo's return to practice ahead of the team's preseason finale Thursday, Aug. 21, against the New England Patriots indicates he has a chance to start the season on time, Sept. 7 at the Washington Commanders. He also could play in the preseason game that kicks off at 5 p.m. MST (8 p.m. Eastern). The Skattebo health trending is looking up, according to a report after Tuesday practice from the Giants. Art Stapleton, Giants beat writer for said Skattebo "did more today in team drills than either Andrew Thomas or Malik Nabers. Daboll indicated before the Aug. 19 practice that Skattebo's participation could be limited, but it was encouraging news nonetheless for a player expected to receive a healthy dose of touches this season. The Giants will consider resting Skattebo for their final preseason game, Thursday, Aug. 21, at home against the New England Patriots but Stapleton, during his podcast published Wednesday morning, Aug. 20, said, "It would not shock me to see him make a cameo" in the preseason finale. "I'm not talking a full load, but maybe a couple snaps," Stapleton said. "... He was running yesterday and it did not look like he was encumbered in any way." There had been concerns that Skattebo's hamstring issue could result in him being placed on injured reserve after final roster cutdowns on Aug. 26. Such a move would require Skattebo to miss the first four weeks of the regular season. Placing him on IR before the squad is trimmed to 53 would force him to miss the entire 2025 season. That concern has been dramatically altered, however, with the news that Skattebo returned to practice and reportedly performed well. Skattebo set the Arizona State single-season record last year with 1,711 yards. He also scored 21 touchdowns, became the first player in school history to amass 2,000 or more yards from scrimmage in a single season and finished fifth in balloting for the Heisman Trophy. Arizona Cardinals sign former ASU O-lineman Dohnovan West before final preseason game
West gives the Cardinals O-line depth for Saturday's game, as starters and key backups probably won't play. The Arizona Cardinals have added an offensive lineman to the roster ahead of their final preseason game. After the move appeared on the league transaction report Tuesday, the team announced it released receiver Kelly Akharaiyi, who had been signed just last week. They signed former Arizona State offensive lineman Dohnovan West. He was one of two linemen to try out for the team on Tuesday. West is a center/guard who played at Arizona State and went undrafted in 2022. He signed with the San Francisco 49ers after the draft and then did not make the final roster that year. Since then, he spent three seasons in professional spring football leagues. He played the past two seasons for St. Louis Battlehawks in the UFL, including appearing in 10 games (six starts) in 2025. In 2023, West played 10 games (seven starts) with the Vegas Vipers in the XFL. His addition suggests that the Cardinals' starters and likely key backups will not get any action in the preseason finale. With Hayden Conner injured, Sincere Haynesworth might play the whole game at center and West would be on the bench in case of an injury.
