Dodgers' Max Muncy expects to miss 6 weeks with bone bruise

New York Times2 days ago
Max Muncy spent months tuning out and defusing unfounded speculation about his standing and the Los Angeles Dodgers' position at third base. He quelled that chatter with his bat, surging as one of the best hitters in the sport in May after trying on glasses, staking his claim to be an All-Star for the third time in his career. Now, after a collision with a sliding Michael A. Taylor twisted his left knee on Wednesday night, all of that remains up in the air once again.

The Dodgers placed Muncy on the injured list on Thursday afternoon after the 34-year-old third baseman spent the morning in an MRI tube. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters at Dodger Stadium on Thursday that those tests revealed a bone bruise, knocking Muncy out for an estimated six weeks.
'It was tough news, but it was also great news,' Muncy told reporters. 'When you look at the play and what could have happened, we got possibly the best-case scenario.'
The organization recalled outfielder Esteury Ruiz to take Muncy's spot on the active roster, a part-time solution as the Dodgers will have to spend the next month before the July 31 trade deadline finalizing how they will handle the position in Muncy's stead.

Kiké Hernández is the likely internal option, filling the same kind of role he did last summer when Muncy missed several months with a strained oblique and displaced rib. Hernández has a .652 OPS on the season and is largely on the roster for his versatility; keeping him to one position could open up some playing opportunities for Korean rookie Hyeseong Kim at second base and center field, and could lead to Miguel Rojas expanding his duties from his current part-time role.
The Dodgers also have top infield prospect Alex Freeland, who has an .836 OPS in 360 plate appearances this season with Triple-A Oklahoma City, with 10 of his 75 starts coming at third base. Freeland was recently dealing with a thumb issue and isn't on the 40-man roster, which could be the reason why Los Angeles opted to bring up Ruiz instead in the short term. The organization is already expecting somewhat of a roster crunch in the coming weeks along with the deadline, with Tyler Glasnow on a rehab assignment and Blake Snell and Blake Treinen now both back to facing hitters.
Los Angeles also added another infielder to their 40-man roster on Thursday, claiming CJ Alexander off waivers from the New York Yankees.

If he were to miss more time, Muncy's absence could also fuel speculation once again that the Dodgers could seek to add a third baseman at the deadline.
Nolan Arenado's desire to play in Los Angeles is well-known throughout the industry, though the Dodgers never engaged in serious trade talks for the eight-time All-Star. The 34-year-old's offensive decline has continued, with his OPS+ dropping from 151 in his top-three MVP finish in 2022 to 108 in 2023, 101 in 2022, and below league average at a 95 OPS+ in 333 plate appearances this season.

Taking on that kind of salary for Arenado through 2026 — rather than Muncy's much more palatable $10 million club option for next season — is among the several considerations that could shift dramatically should Muncy's absence be shorter than originally anticipated. Given how gruesome the injury initially looked, that would be seen as a win for the Dodgers.
Two other third basemen who could be available at the deadline — Arizona's Eugenio Suárez and Colorado's Ryan McMahon — both share a division with the Dodgers, potentially souring any chance of a deal.
The Dodgers originally acquired Ruiz in April, hoping to tap into the unique skill set that the 2023 American League stolen base leader possesses. Ruiz has continued to put up strong exit velocities in the Dodgers' system, and paired that with results down in the minor leagues. Through 300 plate appearances with Oklahoma City, he has hit .292 with an .852 OPS to go with eight home runs and 38 stolen bases.

Chris Richards says US team ready to fight in Gold Cup final against Mexico

HOUSTON — Chris Richards has noticed a turnaround in the U.S. team during the CONCACAF Gold Cup, a change from both the end of coach Gregg Berhalter's tenure and the start of Mauricio Pochettino's. 'We kind of like to fight, so I think that's something that maybe has been missing from the national team over the last few camps, few months, few years,' the defender said ahead of Sunday's final against Mexico. 'We didn't come into camp saying that we want to fight, but I think if teams want to bring it to us, then they have something else coming for them. Of course, we want to win games, but sometimes in CONCACAF it's not pretty, so you have to do the dirty things.'

Could Commanders' Jayden Daniels' 'Wild Trajectory' Lead To MVP In 2025?

Could Commanders' Jayden Daniels' 'Wild Trajectory' Lead To MVP In 2025? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Washington Commanders' quarterback Jayden Daniels has set the bar for 2025 ridiculously high after his rookie season. Advertisement A 12-5 regular season record, two playoff wins, an NFC Championship appearance, and winning Offensive Rookie of the Year, that is some season. Now, with the NFL world knowing he's coming, can he replicate his feats? Or better yet, could he win the MVP award? Yes, we know that is a stunningly high bar for a second-year quarterback, but that is what Daniels has in front of him in 2025, and he has the coaching staff and weapons around him to give it a serious nudge. And Bleacher Report thinks he can win it. "The 2024 No. 2 overall pick is riding a wild trajectory after lighting up the league as a rookie," Bleacher Report writes. "Now, he has even more support and experience around him ahead of Year 2." Advertisement Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden DanielsEric Hartline-Imagn Images Now, Daniels' stats of 3,568 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and nine interceptions will have to improve, and if he can rush for roughly the same as he did last year (891 yards, six touchdowns), then he might be in the conversation. But the biggest thing is the Commanders would have to keep winning. Another 12-win season is likely the floor, meaning he'll have the franchise in the playoffs, potentially as a high seed. That will also work in his favor. However, we do have the dreaded sophomore slump theory dangling over him as he enters Year 2, so he would have to buck that trend, something C.J. Stroud failed to do last year. Advertisement Jayden has all the tools to continue his ascension in 2025, and if everything goes right, who knows, maybe there is an MVP win in there, too. Jordan Love debate sparks backlash against Fox Sports co-host

Jordan Love debate sparks backlash against Fox Sports co-host originally appeared on Athlon Sports. During the NFL offseason, hot takes continue to circulate about the league's star quarterbacks, including the Green Bay Packers' Jordan Love. Expectations are still high for the QB, who is following in the footsteps of Super Bowl winners Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. Advertisement Love is entering his third season as the Packers' starter, and there have been constant comparisons between him and others at the position. One of the most recent involved a debate stirred up involving his NFC North rival, the Chicago Bears' young star Caleb Williams. The initial take arrived from Pro Football Focus and suggested that the ceiling for Williams is Love. However, a more recent take on Fox Sports' First Things First stirred up fans who blasted the critic for his remarks. Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Hartline-Imagn Images While appearing on the show, FS1's Danny Jankins delivered a surprising take in which he suggested Williams is better than Love. Yes, that's what he said. Advertisement "How bout this? Caleb better than Jordan Love. How bout that?" Parkins asked First Things First's Kevin Wildes and Chris Broussard. "Jordan Love has played the majority of two seasons. Both of those seasons, double-digit interceptions," Parkins said, adding, "Caleb Williams played 17 games last year, had six [interceptions]." Broussard and Wildes immediately disagreed with Parkins' take. However, he persisted, indicating that Williams "took too many sacks" and "the offensive line was playing guys who were on other teams' practice squads at the beginning of the year." PFF's floor for Caleb Williams was "bust," which Parkins argued is "off the table." Advertisement "If you watched Caleb Williams, there's no earthly way you could believe that that guy is gonna bust," he said, referencing his impressive touchdown-to-interception ratio. Broussard said that he doesn't think Williams will be a bust, but he needs to be "very good this year," and if he struggles this year, then "bust is on the table." Parkins' remarks about Williams and Love stirred up plenty of fans who fired away at him in the YouTube video's comments. "I am aware that the teams are different, but before we begin Jordan-love analogies, Caleb must qualify for the playoffs," one commenter wrote. "Hard to listen to Parkins talk about football," another YouTube comment said. Advertisement "Danny is getting really good at the whole rage bait thing," one commenter suggested. "Dude 11 interceptions is not even high what is Danny's argument," a commenter asked. Many commenters also mentioned that Parkins is from Chicago, which likely contributed to his suggestion that Williams is better than Love. Most likely, it was designed to grab attention, and it certainly did that, although many commenters seem to be calling for Nick Wright to return to the show ASAP. Jordan Love successfully guided Green Bay to back-to-back postseason appearances as a starter. It's expected they'll contend for the NFC North division and a playoff spot once again behind a strong core of players. Advertisement Williams led the Bears to a 5-12 record in his rookie season. As he enters his sophomore season with the Chicago Bears, he'll need to prove his abilities and impact by guiding the team back to the playoffs.
