Punjab's Rs 12,700 crore NH projects stalled; Rs 828 crore PMGSY road works scrapped over delays
As many as sixteen national highway projects worth ₹12,700 crore, being implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Punjab Public Works Department (PWD), have either been stalled, significantly delayed, or face termination. The primary reasons cited are land acquisition hurdles and delays in obtaining statutory clearances.
Simultaneously, rural road development has also taken a hit. Projects under PMGSY-III worth ₹828.87 crore, involving the upgradation of 64 roads and construction of 38 bridges, have been scrapped due to the state government's failure to float tenders and commence construction on time.
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, in a written reply to Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, confirmed that eight projects are being executed by NHAI and another eight by the state PWD, all of which have encountered delays or stoppages.
'Projects in the state of Punjab are mainly delayed, stalled, or terminated due to land acquisition issues and delay in obtaining statutory clearances. The government is taking requisite measures, in consultation with stakeholders including the state government, to resolve these issues,' the Minister stated in Parliament.
Key Affected Projects Under NHAI
Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway (Spur-II): 30.5 km stretch worth ₹2,197.17 crore terminated due to lack of land; fresh bids to be invited once land is acquired.
Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway (Spur-III): 28.07 km stretch worth ₹1,951.70 crore delayed, now scheduled for completion by 30 November 2026.
Amritsar–Bathinda (Package-I): 39 km project worth ₹1,229.38 crore, originally set to finish by November 2024, now delayed until 31 December 2026.
Amritsar–Ghoman–Tanda–Una (Package-I): 45.73 km stretch worth ₹1,443.47 crore also delayed, with a new completion target of 30 June 2026.
Package-II of this corridor (31.05 km, ₹818.41 crore) has been terminated due to land issues.

AAP slams Rekha govt over waterlogging
New Delhi: Alleging national capital's roads have turned into 'pools' following heavy rain on Thursday, the AAP lambasted the BJP government over severe waterlogging and termed the deaths in rain-related incidents as 'murders'. The opposition party's criticism has sparked a war of words between the ruling BJP and AAP, which was in power in the city for over 10 years until February. Hitting back, Delhi Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra on X said, 'Shameless, indeed! You looted and ruined Delhi for 12 years, then ran off to Punjab, and now, you're blaming the BJP over a fallen tree? 'Delhi will definitely change, but this shamelessness of dancing around with the report card of its own failure is only possible in AAP!' Mishra said in a post in Hindi. Atishi, in her letter to CM Gupta, highlighted multiple incidents that have happened during this monsoon season. 'Many more people have lost their lives in this year's rains -- each a preventable tragedy had there been foresight, infrastructure readiness and decisive governance. Instead, Delhi's citizens are forced to wade through waterlogged streets, navigate collapsing trees, and live in constant fear during every spell of rain,' said the leader of the opposition in Delhi.

Minister Dr G Parameshwara: Firms keen on Metro to Tumakuru
TUMAKURU: Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara here on Friday expressed confidence that the Metro Rail project from Bengaluru will be extended to Tumakuru as some companies have expressed interest to implement the project under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. 'The Metro Rail feasibility report was submitted to the government and it will be presented before the cabinet or technical committee. Some companies have come forward to implement the project and a special purpose vehicle (SPV) will be floated to run the project. The median running along the National Highway will be used, and for that permission from the Centre is required. If the sanction is not given, we will plan an alternative,' he said after taking part in the 78th Independence Day celebrations at the Mahatma Gandhi stadium here. Metro and suburban rails are two possible transport projects between Bengaluru and Tumakuru, Kolar, Mysuru, Kanakapura and Nelamangala. The cabinet approved an allocation of Rs 25 crore for a feasibility study. He said the work on the six-lane National Highway between Bengaluru and Tumakuru is in progress and it will be converted to ten lanes. The minister said CM Siddaramaiah, PWD minister Satish Jarkiholi and he met Union Surface Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari to discuss this project. Deputy Commissioner Subha Kalyan and Superintendent of Police Ashok KV have cleared some bottlenecks and the work will be completed by 2026, he said. He hoped that the construction of a new international cricket stadium near Tumakuru by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) will help prevent stampedes like the one at M Chinnaswamy stadium that claimed the lives of 11. The government has already handed over 41 acres to KSCA, but the project was delayed after the cricket association was busy battling issues related to the stampede, he said. KSCA has made a provision of Rs 160 crore for the stadium.

'The annual pass has received an overwhelming response from the national highway users. On the first day of implementation, around 1.39 lakh transactions were recorded on toll plazas,' it said, adding around 20,000 – 25,000 concurrent users are using Rajmargyatra App at any point of time and annual pass users are receiving SMS messages for zero deduction of toll fee. The FASTag Annual Pass eliminates the need to frequently recharge FASTag through one-time fee payment of Rs 3,000 for one year validity or 200 toll plaza crossings. It is applicable for all non-commercial vehicles with a valid FASTag and gets activated within two hours of the one-time fee payment. To facilitate the use of the annual toll pass, NHAI officials and nodal officers have been appointed on each toll plaza to ensure a smooth travel experience for the pass users. Besides, NHAI is addressing queries of the pass users through various channels and has strengthened 1033 National Highway helpline. The government is of the view that the introduction of the annual pass facility will not only enhance the FASTag user experience but will also make journeys on the national highways and expressways more economical and seamless With a penetration rate of around 98% and over 80 million users, FASTag has revolutionized the electronic toll collection system in the country.
