Was Anderson Tendulkar Trophy at par with Ashes 2005? Former England captain answers

India Todaya day ago
Former England captain Michael Atherton has shared his thoughts on the comparison of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 with the Ashes 2005. England and India played a hard-fought five-match series, which ended in a 2-2 draw after India claimed a thrilling six-run victory on day 5 of the fifth Test at the Oval. The series ebbed and flowed across all five Tests with the action going into Day 5 in all the games. As both teams left the crowd on the edge of their seats with their riveting action, it reminded them of the famous Ashes 2005 series, where England regained the Ashes after 16 years.advertisementRecently, Michael Atherton shared his thoughts on the comparisons between two series and called the Anderson Tendulkar trophy the best since the Ashes.
'I don't think the quality was as good as '05. I don't think I've seen a better series than the '05 Ashes. It was a great team on the decline and the emerging team, absolutely great players at the top of their game. But it was probably the best series since '05,' Atherton told Sky Sports Cricket.Furthermore, he also stated that it pipped even the Ashes 2023 due to its twists and turns.'The 2023 Ashes was a fantastic Ashes, but I'll put this series as the best series since '05 because of those dramatic moments, like Woakes, and like Rishabh Pant. And the twists and turns of the series,' he added.England began the series with a five-wicket win at the Headingley, Leeds. In the second Test, India made a comeback with a massive 336-run victory. The Lord's Test was the most dramatic one of the series as India suffered a heartbreaking 22-run loss after Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja showed great heart in the fourth innings chase after a collapse. In the third Test, Jadeja and Washington Sundar batted out 56 overs to save the match for India. The fifth Test at the Oval also had a thrilling finish as Mohammed Siraj delivered his career-best spell to help India draw level in the five-match series. Hence, both India and England started the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle 2025-27 on a decent note.- Ends

Jacob Bethell will lead England in the upcoming three match T20I series against Ireland, starting from September 17. Bethell is set to captain England in absence of regular skipper Harry Brook, who is being rested along with other all-format players as part of workload management. During the T20Is against England, Bethell, who play for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Indian Premier League (IPL), will become England's youngest men's captain. "Jacob Bethell has impressed with his leadership qualities ever since he has been with the England squads and the series against Ireland will provide him with the opportunity to further develop those skills on the international stage," England men's selector Luke Wright said.
