Foundation stone for new bus station in Khammam
Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Wednesday laid a foundation stone for a new Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) bus station in Madhira.
The bus station will be built at an estimated cost of ₹10 crore. Spread over two acres and 24 guntas, the new facility is set to have 10 platforms, passenger amenities, including waiting halls, and toilets. Efforts will be made to boost multi-modal connectivity with the bus station scheduled to be linked to the railway station.
Several new TGSRTC buses was flagged off one the. Both ministers briefly travelled in one of them . The existing station has been functioning for more than 35 years. This necessitated an upgraded bus station.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Prabhakar said the Congress-led government was committed to strengthening public transport. He underscored that that shortly after assuming office, the Telangana government launched the Mahalakshmi scheme.
He picked holes in the previous government's attitude towards the TGSRTC and stated that they had not acquired new buses or made recruitments more 10 years. He also alleged mismanagement of employee funds had left the corporation financially unstable.
The Khammam district (undivided) has by seven TG SRTC depots. These are in Khammam, Madhira, Sathupalli, Bhadrachalam, Kothagudem, Manuguru, and Yellandu. These operate a combined fleet of 548 buses daily, that include Lahari, Rajadhani, Super Luxury, Deluxe, Mahalakshmi Express, and Pallevelugu services. CM urges Centre to roll back fare hike; passengers flag concerns
Chennai: Calling Indian Railways "an integral part" of daily life for the poor and middle class, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Wednesday urged the Union govt not to hike passenger fares or reduce general class coaches. "The Indian Railway isn't just a service – it's family," Stalin said in a post on X. "To increase the number of AC coaches, don't cut down general class coaches. Don't raise fares." He added that the hike, set to take effect from July, already dampened public mood and would worsen the burden on households already struggling with rising prices and fuel costs. Passenger associations also voiced concern the same day, warning that reducing affordable travel options would drive more people to unsafe or overcrowded modes of transport. AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami also opposed the Centre's proposed railway fare hike, calling it unacceptable and demanding its immediate withdrawal. However, he criticised CM Stalin's stance as hypocritical, pointing out that the DMK-led Tamil Nadu govt already burdened middle-class families with multiple tax and tariff hikes. T Sadagopan, a commuter rights activist from Pattabiram, said demand far exceeds supply. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 월 2만원으로 아이들의 한끼 선물하기 굿네이버스 더 알아보기 Undo "The demand for trains is very high, but they haven't increased the number of trains. It's okay to raise fares if services improve," he said. He pointed out that many travellers are forced to book last-minute tickets at higher tatkal or premium tatkal rates and, failing that, turn to costly road transport. However, some felt the hike was minor and justified. "It was revised only five years ago. The increase is very minimum," said K Baskar of the Railway Passengers' Welfare Association. "Even Chennai–Madurai may not be affected, as the proposal only covers routes above 500 km at one paisa per km." Congress slams govt over US travel advisory, calls it diplomatic failure
The Congress party on Tuesday strongly objected to the recent travel advisory issued by the US State Department urging American citizens to exercise 'increased caution' while travelling to India due to 'crime and terrorism'. At a press conference, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate criticised the Modi government, calling it a 'diplomatic failure' at a time when India needs international cooperation and support. US warns women against solo travel in India Shrinate expressed alarm over the advisory's specific warning to women against travelling alone in India. The US State Department's Level 2 alert states: 'Rape is one of the fastest growing crimes in India,' and that 'violent crimes, including sexual assault, occur at tourist sites and other locations.' It further warns that 'terrorists may attack with little or no warning'. Shrinate: Govt's silence damages foreign policy credibility Shrinate argued that the development reflects poorly on the Modi administration's international credibility. Drawing a parallel to a previous episode, she recalled how the government remained silent when former US President Donald Trump falsely claimed—on 17 occasions including three tweets and 14 on-camera statements—to have brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Critique of US double standards and Pakistan policy The Congress spokesperson also accused the United States of hypocrisy. While India faces a Level 2 advisory, she noted, no such travel alert had been issued for Pakistan, which she described as a 'terror state'. She criticised the US for issuing the advisory while simultaneously engaging with Pakistan's military leadership, including Chief of Army Staff General Asif Munir. Advisory impacts tourism, investment: Congress 'A sound foreign policy puts India's interests first,' said Shrinate. 'But this government is more concerned about getting the camera angle right.' She warned that the US advisory is more than a diplomatic note—it has tangible consequences for India's global image, tourist inflows, and foreign investment sentiment. 'Institutional investors consider such advisories before committing capital,' she added. Women's safety crisis highlighted Shifting focus to domestic issues, Shrinate said the advisory only reinforces ongoing concerns about the safety of women in India. She stated that '43 women face crime in India every hour,' and alleged that, despite rising violence, funding for key women's protection schemes has been slashed.
