(Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: The High Court has allowed the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) another month to review and decide on representations made by Najib Razak in connection with his RM27 million SRC International Sdn Bhd money laundering case. Justice K Muniandy allowed the extension at case management today following an oral application by deputy public prosecutor Ashrof Adrin Kamarul. 'The intention is to provide a decision by next month but I'm not at liberty to say if it is negative or positive,' he said. Meanwhile, senior counsel Shafee Abdullah who represented the former prime minister asked the court to grant Najib a discharge not amounting to acquittal (DNAA). He said the matter had been hanging for far too long. 'We put in the representations as early as July 31, 2023. 'The representations, in terms of facts, have not changed. It's the same representations for which we have not received any reply from the AGC. 'In view of the fact that it is going to be two years since the representations were submitted, may I formally ask Yang Arif if you would grant a DNAA on this matter. 'We are only asking for a DNAA, if they (prosecution) want to reignite the case they can always do that,' he said. Ashrof said the prosecution would leave the matter to the discretion of the court. Muniandy then fixed a case management on June 11 and ordered Najib to be present on that day. The prosecution was also asked to be prepared to make submissions on the defence's DNAA application. Najib, 71, is asking for the three money laundering charges, brought against him in February 2019, to be withdrawn. In a later case which began on April 3, 2019, Najib was slapped with seven charges of abuse of power, money laundering and criminal breach of trust involving RM42 million in SRC International funds. On July 28, 2020, the High Court convicted the former prime minister of all seven charges. His appeal to the Court of Appeal was dismissed on Dec 8, 2021 and the Federal Court on Aug 23, 2022. He is currently serving a reduced six-year prison term after receiving a partial pardon in January last year. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Gerik crash: Driver advised not to make any statements to avoid interfering police investigation
Published on: Wednesday, June 11, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 11, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Filepic of the crash site by Bernama IPOH: Police have advised the bus driver involved in the crash along the East-West Highway (JRTB) in Gerik, which claimed 15 lives two days ago, not to make any statements to any party. Perak Police Chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said this is to avoid a situation that could interfere with the police investigation. Advertisement He said the 39-year-old driver is currently being treated at the Taiping Hospital. "The statements by the bus driver could raise various other speculations. Although this country allows freedom of speech, I want him to be patient until it is his turn to give his statement," he told a press conference at the Perak Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK), here, today. The crash, which occurred last Monday, involved a chartered bus carrying Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (Upsi) students travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak. The bus overturned at KM53 of the JRTB, near Tasik Banding, Gerik, resulting in the loss of 15 lives. The crash also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver, his assistant, and three passengers of the Perodua Alza involved in the collision. Noor Hisam said the police would record the driver's statement after being allowed to do so by the hospital. He said the police had so far recorded the statements of 18 witnesses, including the UPSI students who were involved in the accident. "We are conducting a detailed investigation which also involves several agencies, including the Perak Malaysian Chemical Department, the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (PUSPAKOM) to determine the exact cause of the accident," he said. Touching on the dashboard camera video that recorded the incident, he said the evidence had been sent to the Bukit Aman Forensic Department for analysis. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? AGC rejects Najib's representation in RM27m SRC case
THE Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) has rejected former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's representation to drop three additional money laundering charges involving RM27 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd funds. The matter was informed by deputy public prosecutor Mohd Ashrof Adrin Kamarul when the case came up for mention before High Court Judge 'My Lord, I'm here to to inform the court that the representation has been rejected and the prosecution is going to proceed with the trial. My instructions are to inform the court of the matter and to seek trial dates,' he said. At the same time, the prosecutor asked the court for a longer time as he needed more time to obtain documents as well as to prepare witness statements. On Feb 3, 2019, Najib claimed trial to three charges of money laundering by accepting illegal proceeds amounting to RM27 million through his three AmPrivate Banking accounts at AmIslamic Bank Berhad, AmBank Group Building, Jalan Raja Chulan on July 8, 2014. Earlier, Mohd Ashrof informed the court that SRC's RM42 million case, which was previously presided over by then High Court Judge Datuk Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali (now a Court of Appeal Judge), involved 807 exhibits. He stated that these exhibits are required for use in the current trial. 'Therefore, My Lord, the prosecution will be formally requesting the registry of the High Court to return those exhibits to the prosecution for this case. I have been informed that this will require a little bit of time, and therefore, we are humbly seeking for a longer trial date to be fixed,' said the prosecutor. Meanwhile, Najib's lead counsel, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah suggested that the court grant a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) for his client, to avoid burdening the court's docket and to allow the prosecution time to prepare without prejudice. 'My Lord, the charges were preferred in 2019, and the representation was submitted on July 31, 2023. The defence believes there is merit to the representation due to the conclusive nature of the first SRC trial and subsequent appeals. 'The case has been ongoing since 2019, and the delay has spanned six years. Documents related to SRC are scattered across various courts, including the Federal Court and civil proceedings,' said the lawyer. The judge then asked the prosecutor for his view on the DNAA application, to which Mohd Ashrof said he disagreed as the prosecution was ready to proceed with the trial. 'I disagree. However, regarding the documentation, I humbly request more time to obtain the necessary documents,' Mohd Ashrof reiterated. The court then fixed June 20 to decide on the DNAA application by Najib. The former Pekan MP was charged under Section 4 (1) (a) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001, which is punishable by a maximum fine of RM5 million or imprisonment of up to five years, or both upon conviction. Najib is currently serving a jail term in Kajang Prison for the misappropriation of RM42 million in the SRC International funds case. On Sept 2, 2022, he filed a petition for a royal pardon, following which on Jan 29, 2024 the Pardons Board halved his jail term from 12 to six years and reduced the fine from RM210 million to RM50 million. — BERNAMA

Ukraine says Russian strikes hit Kharkiv, killing two
KYIV: Fresh Russian strikes on Ukraine's northeastern city of Kharkiv killed two people and wounded 54 including children early Wednesday, authorities said, as Moscow pushed ahead with its relentless attacks after rejecting an unconditional ceasefire. 'Seventeen strikes by enemy UAVs (drones) were carried out in two districts of the city tonight,' Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov said on Telegram, later adding that 37 people were wounded and 'several people were rescued from houses engulfed in flames'. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine said eight children were wounded in the attack. Russia has escalated its bombardments of Ukraine despite US President Donald Trump urging Moscow to end its three-year invasion, with Kyiv launching retaliatory attacks deep inside Russian territory. After a previous overnight barrage of more than 300 drones and seven missiles on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Kyiv's Western allies to respond with 'concrete action'. 'Action from America, which has the power to force Russia into peace. Action from Europe, which has no alternative but to be strong,' Zelensky wrote on social media. Peace talks in Turkey last week failed to yield a breakthrough towards ending the conflict, with Russia rejecting calls for an unconditional ceasefire and demanding Ukraine give up its territory and bid to join NATO. But the two sides agreed to swap more than 1,000 prisoners of war and hand over the bodies of dead soldiers, swapping groups of captured soldiers on Monday and Tuesday. Prisoner exchanges Kharkhiv, which lies less than 50 kilometres (31 miles) from the Russian border, has been hit by a surge in large-scale nighttime attacks over the past week. Wednesday's strikes left a five-story building on fire in Slobidskyi district, while several houses were hit in Osnovyansky district, Mayor Terekhov said. He said 'there may be people trapped under the rubble'. The attack came after Russia pummelled the city on Saturday in what Terekhov called 'the most powerful attack' on Kharkiv since the start of the war. Four people were killed and more than 50 wounded as homes and apartment blocks were hit overnight and guided bombs were dropped on the city on Saturday afternoon. Ukraine is also stepping up its drone attacks on Russia, targeting military production and bases. On Tuesday, one person was killed and four others wounded in a drone attack that destroyed a convenience store in the Russian region of Belgorod, according to Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov. Nevertheless, the two sides carried out a second prisoner of war swap on Tuesday. The deal should see the freeing of all captured soldiers under the age of 25, as well as those who are sick or severely wounded, though neither side has specified the number of soldiers involved. But Zelensky has said it is 'pointless' to hold further talks with the current Russian delegation -- who he previously dismissed as 'empty heads' -- since they could not agree to a ceasefire. As a condition for halting its invasion, Russia has demanded that Ukraine cede the territories Moscow says it has annexed and forswear joining NATO. It has also rejected a proposed 30-day unconditional ceasefire sought by Kyiv and the European Union, arguing that this would allow Ukrainian forces to rearm with Western deliveries. Ukraine is demanding a complete Russian withdrawal of from its territory and security guarantees from the West.
