‘Traumatic journey of betrayal': Hugh Jackman's wife Deborra-Lee Furness breaks silence on divorce amid cheating rumours

Indian Express2 days ago

Hollywood actor Hugh Jackman and his wife Deborra-Lee Furness are officially heading for divorce two years after announcing their separation. The duo were married for 27 long years and have two kids, Oscar and Ava. Reportedly, Furness approached the Suffolk County Supreme Court in New York on May 23 for an uncontested divorce, which means only a judge's signature is needed to end the marriage. While Deborra's legal team has confirmed they have received the spousal support payment, the couple are reportedly struggling to split their combined $250 million fortune. On the other hand, speaking to the Daily Mail, the Australian actor, for the first time, broke silence on divorce and took a public swipe at the Wolverine star amid infidelity rumours.
Jackman is currently dating his The Music Man co-star Sutton Foster. The duo first sparked dating rumours in 2023. Now, after two years of silence over the sudden divorce move, Furness is expressing sympathy for anyone who has 'traversed the traumatic journey of betrayal,' just like hers, and said her faith helped her get through this difficult time. 'It's a profound wound that cuts deep; however, I believe in a higher power and that God/the universe, whatever you relate to as your guidance, is always working for us,' she told the Mail in a scathing statement. She believes that even painful experiences lead us to learn and grow, and in the end, despite the end of almost three decades of marriage, being true to yourself is the key to freedom. 'It can hurt, but in the long run, returning to yourself and living within your own integrity, values, and boundaries is liberation and freedom,' she said.

Behind the scenes, the divorce is said to be chaos-free, unlike most Hollywood divorces that drag on for weeks, years, and even decades in some cases. Deborra-Lee's lawyer, Elena Karabatos, earlier submitted legal papers including details about health care coverage, child support, and the settlement. Both she and Hugh Jackman seem to have agreed on terms quietly, so they only need to come to court to sign the papers. 'There was some back and forth regarding this financial agreement, but in the end, [Deborra] got what she believed she deserved. Both are coming out of this financially secure,' an insider told Mail on Tuesday.

The marriage had been strained for years, and Furness suspected Hugh of cheating on her, according to a close friend of the Australian star who spoke to the same outlet in November last year, claiming, 'They based their marriage on honesty. But if Hugh didn't physically cheat, she knows that he did emotionally.' Over the years, the couple has owned and sold multiple properties, including a $21 million penthouse in New York, a $5.9 million beach house in Sydney, and a property in East Hampton, New York. However, according to a source, 'They have worked out the details in advance and everything is ironed out in terms of a settlement.' The couple is reportedly planning to be amicable and fully committed to co-parenting their kids. Despite all this, Deborra-Lee says she remains grateful and focused on healing.
Back in September 2023, the couple released a joint statement saying, 'We have been blessed to share almost three decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage. Our journey now is shifting, and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth.'

Hugh Jackman, Deborra-Lee Furness Finalize 387M USD Property Split Amid Divorce: Who Gets NYC Condo, Bondi Retreat, More

Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness have reached a final agreement on how to divide their USD 387 million fortune, including several luxury homes across the globe. The settlement follows Deborra's divorce filing in New York on May 23, nearly two years after the couple announced their separation. According to sources close to the pair, the divorce is uncontested and only awaits a judge's signature. 'A settlement was reached that Deborra is pleased with, which includes a handsome spousal support payment,' a source told the Daily Mail. 'There is not going to be any drama with this. It gives her the closure that she needed.' Who gets what in the USD 387 million property split? At the center of the settlement are multiple high-end properties across the US, UK, and Australia. Jackman will retain ownership of their three-story New York City condo, which they purchased in 2008 for USD 21 million. The Chelsea apartment, once listed for nearly USD 39 million, is now home to Jackman and his new partner, Broadway star Sutton Foster. Hugh Jackman is also expected to keep their Bondi Beach retreat in Australia. Meanwhile, Deborra-Lee Furness and her legal team have secured a favorable share of the couple's assets and financial support. The couple did not have a prenuptial agreement, which reportedly complicated the settlement process earlier this year. 'One of the biggest reasons why they hadn't yet filed is that they never had a prenup,' said a source close to Jackman. They added that when they got married, they thought it would be forever. However, after several months of negotiations, both parties reached a mutual agreement regarding their finances and the care of their children. Another insider said that they have worked out the details in advance and everything is ironed out in terms of a settlement, alimony, and the expenses for the future of their children. The couple adopted two children during their 27-year marriage, Oscar, 24, and Ava, 19, and both are said to remain committed to co-parenting.

Box Office: Sinners earns USD 1.1M on 6th Wednesday, surpasses Joker and Oppenheimer among R-rated films

Ryan Coogler's supernatural horror film Sinners continues to defy expectations at the US box office, posting a strong USD 1.1 million on its sixth Wednesday. Despite a significant 40.5 percent drop from the previous Wednesday and losing a harsh 886 theaters on Friday, Sinners achieved the second biggest sixth Wednesday ever for an R-rated film. It surpassed major hits like Joker, Oppenheimer, and Deadpool & Wolverine, all of which had made under USD 1 million at the same point in their run. Sinners only trailed behind The Passion of the Christ, which recorded USD 1.3 million on its sixth Wednesday. Sinners also ranks as the third biggest sixth Wednesday for April releases, holding strong alongside heavyweights like Infinity War (USD 1.1M, -26.7 percent) and The Super Mario Bros. Movie (USD 1.1M, -45.5 percent). The film's resilience is notable given the increasing competition and its impending digital release, which has impacted the number of cinemas housing the film. Nevertheless, the horror mega hit has already amassed a domestic cumulative gross of USD 261 million and is expected to reach around USD 280 million in the US, contingent on how the market acts over the weekend. Set in 1932 in the Mississippi Delta, Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as criminal brothers Smoke and Stack, who return to their hometown to start a fresh life but face a haunting evil instead. The ensemble cast includes Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo, contributing to the film's rich and suspenseful narrative. Coogler produced, wrote, and directed the film. He began developing Sinners through his production company Proximity Media in early 2024 before Warner Bros. Pictures snagged the distribution rights after an intense bidding war. Principal photography took place between April and July of the same year. The film's haunting score was composed by longtime Coogler collaborator Ludwig Göransson, who also served as an executive producer. Released stateside on April 18, Sinners has received widespread critical acclaim for its atmospheric storytelling, strong performances, and innovative blend of historical drama, musical evil, and suspense. Globally, the film has grossed an impressive USD 341 million, making it the seventh highest-grossing film of 2025 so far. With Sinners continuing to perform steadily in its sixth week, it has firmly established itself as a major box office phenomenon, proving that well-crafted horror with a compelling narrative can even dominate in a crowded market.
