IIT Madras Intern Sexually Harassed By Food Court Staff

A 22-year-old man has been arrested allegedly for sexually harassing an intern at the IITM (Madras), police said on Saturday.
The arrested was working at a food court inside the institute and he allegedly sexually harassed a 20-year-old intern on the campus on June 25 night, police said.
Taking suo moto cognizance of the offence, the National Commission for Women chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote to Tamil Nadu DGP calling for a fair and time-bound investigation under relevant provisions of BNS, 2023.
'NCW has also directed the authorities to ensure the victim receives immediate medical and psychological support,' the Commission said in a post on the social media platform X on Saturday.
The incident occurred around 7.30 pm when the woman intern was walking alone in the campus.
According to Kotturpuram police, the man who held a stick went close to her and pulled her hair. Immediately, the intern raised an alarm. The security personnel on the campus rushed to her rescue.
The police later identified the suspect as one Roshan Kumar, a native of Maharashtra, who was working at a food court in IIT (M). He was arrested and remanded on June 26. Further investigation is on.
Meanwhile, responding to the incident, the IIT (M) stated that an unfortunate incident took place at the IIT Madras campus on June 25, when a contractual employee of a vendor operating on the campus "misbehaved" with a woman student, visiting from other institute.
'The girl raised an alarm and the culprit was held by the institute security and handed over to the local police. IIT (M) has a zero tolerance policy towards sexual harassment and we are committed to provide a safe and secure campus to all,' the institute said in a statement.

Pune 'godman' installs spy app to film devotees, forces them into obscene acts
A man posing as a godman was arrested in Pune for allegedly secretly recording devotees through a spy app, forcing them into doing obscene acts and pushing them towards solicitation after matter came to light when a 39-year-old man filed a complaint with the police, alleging that the accused, identified as Prasad alias Dada Bhimrao Tamdar, installed a spy app on his mobile phone. The spy app was used to remotely access private data and personal lives of the devotees, the complainant accused claimed to possess divine powers and used his influence to manipulate and exploit followers, the complaint said. Police said the accused used an app called Air Droid Kid, a hidden surveillance tool, to record the movements, conversations, and actions of several devotees. He would invite followers under the pretext of conducting secret healing rituals and spiritual arose when a few devotees noticed irregularities in their phone settings and the fake godman's behaviour. This led to a formal police complaint and subsequent the raid, police seized the accused's mobile phone, which contained objectionable content and multiple video clips recorded without the followers' Vibhute, the senior Police Inspector of Pune's Bavdhan Police Station, said a case was registered against the accused under Sections 318(4) (cheating) and 75(1) (sexual harassment) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant provisions of the Maharashtra Anti-Superstition and Black Magic were examining the accused's other digital devices and cloud storage to trace the extent of the crime. ULFA-I linkman arrested by Assam Police
Guwahati: Assam Police on Saturday arrested one person on the charges of working as a linkman to the banned outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent), officials said. The arrested person has been identified as Shibanan Saikia. Saikia was arrested by police from a tea factory in the Charaideo district. A senior police official said, "We have kept a close watch on Saikia's activity. He has been working as a linkman to the militant outfit ULFA-I. We have taken him into custody in a joint operation with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Saikia will be interrogated to unearth further links with ULFA-I." Recently, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against three individuals associated with the banned insurgent group ULFA-I for their alleged involvement in planting improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Guwahati during the 2024 Independence Day celebrations. The accused -- Paresh Baruah, Abhijit Gogoi, and Jahnu Boruah -- have been charged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and the Explosive Substances Act. The charges were filed on Friday after an extensive investigation into the terror plot aimed at destabilising the region and spreading panic among the public, the NIA said in a statement on Saturday. According to the NIA, the trio was linked to an IED planted at Dispur Last Gate, Guwahati, in what was part of a larger ULFA-I conspiracy to execute multiple IED blasts across Assam. The group aimed to disrupt Independence Day celebrations and instil fear through coordinated acts of terror. "The trio were found linked with the IED planted by the terror outfit at Dispur Last Gate, Guwahati, Assam, as part of the ULFA (I) conspiracy to trigger multiple IED blasts across Assam, including at Dispur Last Gate, to disrupt the I-Day celebrations last year," the NIA stated. The NIA had taken over the case in September 2024. Its investigation found that the planted IEDs were intended to cause death, injuries, and property damage, with the broader objective of threatening India's unity, integrity, security, and sovereignty. "The IEDs had been planted to cause death/injuries to persons and/or loss/damage/destruction to property, with the intent to threaten the unity, integrity, security and sovereignty of India, and to strike terror among the people of the country," the NIA added. Further investigations into the case are currently ongoing.
