USA Today4 days ago
Cleveland Browns rookie running back Quinshon Judkins was arrested in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Saturday, July 12.
According to the arrest report from the Broward County Sheriff's Office, Judkins was arrested and faces a single charge under Florida statute 784.03, relating to "touch or strike/battery/domestic violence." There is no bond amount set for Judkins, and his charge status is pending trial, according to police records.
Per the Florida criminal code, Judkins faces a charge of battery, in which a person "actually and intentionally touches or strikes another person against the will of the other" — typically a first-degree misdemeanor that carries a penalty of a "definite term of imprisonment not exceeding one year" and a $1,000 fine.
Selected with the 36th overall pick in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Browns, Judkins was one of 14 Ohio State players drafted back in April.
A Browns spokesperson told the Akron Beacon Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network, the the team was "aware and gathering information" about Judkins' arrest.
In his lone season at Ohio State, Judkins was part of a one-two punch running back group with TreVeyon Henderson, helping lead the Buckeyes to their first College Football Playoff national championship since 2014 with a 34-23 win over Notre Dame.
In 16 games this past season for the Buckeyes, Judkins ran for 1,060 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns on 194 carries, adding 161 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns on 22 receptions. He ran for 100 yards and two touchdowns in the national championship game.
Across his three seasons at Ole Miss and Ohio State, Judkins ran for a combined 3,785 yards and 45 touchdowns. Judkins is scheduled to report to his first NFL training camp on Friday, July 18 with the rest of the Browns' rookies, per NFL.com.

Tennessee embraces QB battle as Florida, Mississippi State seek new heights

ATLANTA (AP) — The Southeastern Conference's evolving quarterback situations continued to be a focal point of SEC media days on Wednesday. Florida quarterback DJ Lagway went 6-1 after taking over as the starter midway through 2024, creating some buzz around the Gators heading into year four of the Billy Napier era. Mississippi State quarterback Blake Shapen is back after a shoulder injury ended his 2024 season in September, and the Bulldogs are looking to respond from a winless league campaign in year two under Jeff Lebby. Meanwhile, Tennessee has an ongoing quarterback battle with three participants, headlined by Appalachian State transfer Joey Aguilar. Tennessee still searching for Nico Iamaleava's replacement Tennessee underwent one of the highest profile quarterback changes. Former five-star recruit Nico Iamaleava started all 13 games for the Volunteers last season as they reached the College Football Playoff, but departed the week of the spring game before eventually transferring to UCLA. Coach Josh Heupel — a former National Championship winning quarterback himself — confirmed three quarterbacks are still in the mix to earn the job heading into preseason camp. 'We've found a way to win with a lot of different quarterbacks throughout my career,' Heupel said. 'And we're going to find a way to win with the guy that earns a starting spot as we go through training camp here in August.' Aguilar initially transferred from Appalachian State to UCLA in December, but re-entered the portal and enrolled at Tennessee following Iamaleava's exit. He started 11 games for the Mountaineers in 2024, throwing for 3,002 yards and 23 touchdowns with 14 interceptions. Jake Merklinger appeared in two games last season while redshirting, and George MacIntyre is an incoming true freshman. 'Now it's about getting to training camp and going and competing,' Heupel said. 'Somebody is going to earn the opportunity to be our starting quarterback through that process.' Lagway looking to carry momentum forward alongside AP All-American center As Napier enters his fourth season, only one player on his roster has appeared in every single game of his tenure. Center Jake Slaughter brings a streak of 38 consecutive games played and 21 consecutive starts into 2025, and was the only 2024 AP All-America selection in attendance at SEC media days. 'He was voted team captain by his teammates last year, and he very much lives it out,' Napier said about Slaughter. 'He's a guy that sets the tone every day.' The battery between Slaughter and Lagway sparked a late charge last fall, helping Florida rebound from a 4-5 start to win its final four games including upsets of then No. 22 LSU and No. 9 Ole Miss. Lagway's 6-1 mark as a starter tied Chris Leak for the most wins by a true freshman quarterback in program history. 'He treats everything like it's the last thing he's ever going to do,' Slaughter said on Lagway. 'But then on game day, he's got a different type of swag to him. He's getting everybody fired up. You don't see that from Sunday through Friday, just Saturday.' Healthy Shapen returns for Mississippi State Lebby has nowhere to go but up after a winless conference season and a 2-10 overall record in 2024. Part of Mississippi State's struggles last season spiraled from Shapen's injury. The Baylor transfer fractured his right scapula in week four and the Bulldogs went 1-7 in his absence. 'I am 100% healthy,' Shapen said. 'Obviously it was tough not playing last year, but I'm back now and I feel better than ever.' Shapen threw eight touchdowns and only one interception with 974 passing yards in his limited sample size, creating some belief his return combined with an extra year of experience in Lebby's offense can help the Bulldogs in 2025. 'Inside our walls right now we have great belief,' Lebby said. 'Our guys are incredibly intent on getting better and changing the outcome this fall.'

NFL execs love elite 3rd-year Cowboy with just 13 games played, makes ESPN Top 10

The Dallas Cowboys' class of 2023 is not a lost cause; not totally. The best draft pick just hasn't been able to find a way to stay on the field. When the club selected Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, it had high hopes and a ton of question marks. Overshown had converted from safety to linebacker at Austin, translating his solid positional speed into elite. The requisite questions about being able to disengage blockers, read plays and handle the wear and tear followed, as they should for a secondary player moving to the front seven. And it's the last concern that has reared its head the most, keeping him from reaching his heights, heights that apparently the entire league is well aware of. Despite losing his rookie season to an ACL, and the last third of his second to another, Overshown appears in the top 10 of the ESPN-led poll of NFL executives for linebackers in 2025. Overshown, despite likely being out until Halloween and implied concerns about just how much he'll be back to normal this coming season, was ranked No. 8 overall. Highest ranking: 4 | Lowest ranking: UnrankedAge: 24 | Last year's ranking: not eligible (rookie) Overshown needed only 12 NFL games to convince a healthy number of voters that he's a high-impact linebacker. "He's absolutely amazing," a personnel exec with an NFL team said. "Ridiculous." "One of the most athletic linebackers I've ever seen," a veteran NFL defensive coach said. "He's the fastest guy out there. Can completely take over a game and was really starting to get it." Added an NFC offensive coach: "He's the second guy you worry about in Dallas, after Micah [Parsons]. Big run-and-hit ability, third-down speed to cover." All that praise comes with a caveat: significant injury concerns. Overshown sat out his rookie season in 2023 because of an ACL tear in his left knee, then sustained a severe injury to his right knee in December 2024, tearing three ligaments (ACL, MCL, PCL). He plans to return at some point in the 2025 season, and that's also Dallas' hope. Multiple voters have serious concerns about whether Overshown can maintain a consistent NFL career because of the damage already done. But his body of work in less than a full NFL season was strong: 90 tackles, 5 sacks, 4 pass deflections, 1 interception, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery. He led the top 10 in average distance run on tackles (18.9 yards). "He can be a stud but has to really improve in zone coverage and when he has to disengage from a block," a veteran NFL defensive coach said. "He can play man-to-man on any RB or TE in the league but zone awareness lacks. He does a great job using his athleticism to slip under blocks but if they get hands on him, it's a problem." The Cowboys have waited a long time for an impact linebacker like Overshown, but fans know they've tried. They spent their 2017 second-round pick on Jaylon Smith, and their 2018 first rounder on Leighton Vander Esch. Both came with injury concerns that bore out in their shortened pro careers. Overshown didn't have those concerns, was drafted in the perfect place to land a linebacker and still the injuries have become an issue. Returning a year after an ACL to play at the level he did offers some hope he can do it again, once he's able to return to the field. The league is certainly aware how much his presence can help the Dallas defense, and that's before the thoughts of new defensive coordinator, noted linebacker-whisperer Matt Eberflus, gets his hands on him.
